Invited Webinar of IEEE EDS NCTU Student Branch Chapter

    ▶Title:
Beyond CMOS: Novel Materials, Emerging Memory and Applications

    ▶Speaker:
Prof. Ying-Chen “Daphne” Chen, Northern Arizona University

    ▶Date:
    7/30, 2021 (Fri.)
    10:00 - 11:30 AM
    Microsoft Teams 會議網址: https://reurl.cc/bXqxAd

    ▶Abstract:
Towards the end of the Moore’s law scaling approaching, there is a need for new device technologies that break the limits of computing performance at the nanoscale while enabling better energy efficiency. We also need to consider a new approach with the new materials and new devices for exploring new paradigms of computing. Among the emerging technologies, emerging memory become the candidates for enabling the highly efficient computing while with nonvolatile effect for information storage applications. This talk aims to introduce the current develop of novel materials and emerging electronics, such as the memristor with mimicking the neural system, 2D materials for flexible electronics, and helix-structured active matters.

    ▶Short Bio:
Dr. Daphne Chen is the assistant professor in School of Informatics, Computing and Cyber Systems at Northern Arizona University. She received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at The University of Texas at Austin in 2019, B.S. and M.S. degree from National Chiao Tung University (Taiwan). Prior to joining NAU, she was the R&D Pathfinding Emerging Memory Engineer at Micron Technology working on emerging memory and future applications. Her primary research focuses on emerging electronics and memory devices for high storage class, new computing, and energy-efficient integrated systems. She was also the recipient of Sandia National Laboratory Research Award 2019, and Rising Stars 2017 in EECS (among 60 recipients worldwide).

I'm a lucky person who happens to attend the same gym with, my coach, kenneth Lo! From a bystander admiring his monstrous Olympic lifting skills to becoming one of his students, I courageously stepped into the 12 weeks body transformation & mentorship program.

To be very honest, Kenneth's program is of no joke & no BS! It's the most hard-core & most challenging training I've ever been through...thought of quitting in the first 3 weeks! Luckily I tried to toughen up myself & finished every bits & pieces of it. Isn't this part of the learning process? To train up both your body & at the same time, your will power as well!

In the program, skills & techniques of my lifts got polished. I became much stronger & more confident in powerlifting. Physically, I amazed myself by, on the one hand, cutting so much weight, while on the other hand, got much stronger & be able to perform better in all my lifts than before.

Being a regular gym goer, I'm a girl who likes to be lean & strong instead of just out right skinniness, this 12 weeks program had done magic! Trainers nowadays always like to say 如何減脂不減肌… the person who can lead you down this road is quote "#AskKenneth"!

Through a proper workout & nutrition plan, I learned a lot in nutrition, dieting, stress control, workout paradigms etc. which can help to achieve different goals & purposes.

Now, I progressed from being a bystander watching Kenneth doing Olympic lifting into a beginner of learning how to do it myself. So glad that I had embarked on this amazing journey & will keep on training hard to see what new challenges await.

    Fresh Grace and Fresh Power

It’s a new year with fresh grace for this season. You can’t rely on last year’s grace and mindset to reign in this year.

What worked for last year is for last year. We have to flow with the Holy Spirit.

Read about Philip in Acts 8. He had a successful ministry in the villages of Samaria. The apostles Peter and John even came to preach and baptize the new believers.

At the apparent peak of the ministry, God told Philip to leave and go to a desert!

“But an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, “Arise, and go toward the south to the way that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. This is a desert.”” (Acts‬ ‭8:26‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

If we use an old mindset to tackle the new year, we will think, “Oh, but my time is more productive here in Samaria because the ministry has been growing fast and I need to be here preaching and teaching. This is no time to travel into a desert.”

However, to be spiritually-minded is to follow God’s instruction, even though it doesn’t make sense at the moment.

After obeying the instruction to go into the desert, Philip ended up preaching the Gospel to an eunuch which served as a royal treasurer for the queen of the Ethiopians.

“He arose and went; and behold, there was a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was over all her treasure, who had come to Jerusalem to worship. He was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah.” (Acts‬ ‭8:27-28‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

The eunuch was saved and baptized in water, opening a huge door for salvation of souls in the kingdom of Ethiopia. God was able to move greatly there through the joint cooperation with Philip.

Philip’s ministry reached an international audience, and his impact for the Kingdom increased exponentially because he obeyed God’s instruction.

Then, Philip was caught away by the Holy Spirit—like a mini Rapture, and he appeared in Azotus.

“When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, and the eunuch didn’t see him any more, for he went on his way rejoicing. But Philip was found at Azotus. Passing through, he preached the Good News to all the cities, until he came to Caesarea.” (Acts‬ ‭8:39-40‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Philip would have never experienced this miracle if he had stayed in Samaria. God would have used another believer, and that other person would have been honored in the Scriptures, and rewarded by Jesus for the obedience.

This year, if you will harken to the voice of the Holy Spirit and obey His fresh instructions with the fresh grace He gives to you, you will experience His power in your life like never before. You will be effective for the Kingdom in ways that you never dreamed possible.

Look to Jesus and keep receiving new grace from Him—He makes all things new, and you can’t be stuck in past paradigms if you want to keep in step with the Holy Spirit!

Go to https://www.grammarly.com/xiaomanyc for 20% off Grammarly Premium today! Today we’re talking about the most difficult languages to learn on planet earth. This isn’t your standard, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Cantonese, Arabic list — we’re talking today about languages that break linguistic paradigms in all sorts of bizarre ways. I don’t want to give it away, but the list includes a rare dialect of Chinese, a *very* strange register of Spanish, a language from Sub-Saharan Africa with some extremely unusual sounds, an Amazonian language that completely blows linguists’ minds, and a constructed language that’s so impossibly different that no one is known to actually be able to speak it. Hope you enjoy!
