Police Saved 19-year-old Contemplating Suicide

Summary:
Determining that the wait for a negotiator could mean life and death, the policemen on the scene took up the role instead to talk a 19-year-old plagued by a debt of $100,000 out of leaping from a rooftop. Fortunately, the teenager was dissuaded after an hour thanks to the genuine concern displayed by the officers and the practical advice they offered.

相信同學知道遊說別人做事的動詞是 persuade，相反遊說別人不要做某事可用 dissuade 或 talk sb. out of (doing) sth.。如果場合是把企跳者勸回到地面，則更可以用 talk sb. down，但要小心它也可解作「大聲說話不讓別人發言」，而另一與它非常相似的動詞片語 talk down on sb. 則是以居高臨下的輕蔑口吻對別人說話，切勿混淆。
