🤷🏻‍♀️Because data on Covid-19 progression is scant and knowledge about the virus that causes it is swiftly changing, guidelines about when patients in recovery can safely resume some aspects of their pre-coronavirus lives vary greatly around the globe, and even within countries.
康復中的新冠肺炎患者，何時可在一定程度上安全回歸疫情前的生活？由於新冠肺炎病程的相關數據不足，且人們對於新冠病毒的了解也在不斷刷新，世界各國、甚至很多國家內部不同地區給出的指導原則都有巨大差異。

scant 少量的、不足的
progression 病程
✍️progression平常有「進展；發展；前進」的意思，在這指的是患者的病程
pre-coronavirus lives 疫情前的生活
✍️pre-字首有「在某時間或事件…前」的意思，這裡的pre加上coronavirus成了「疫情前」的意思

❌Adding to the uncertainty, some guidelines differ depending on the severity（嚴重程度）and type of case.
此外，部分指導原則也視具體病例的嚴重程度和類型而有所不同，增添了患者回歸的不確定性。

uncertainty 不確定性
✍️（un- 具有not 或no 的意思）un- ＋certainty（確定性）＝不確定性
differ 跟…不一樣，有區別

The variation is sowing（引起）confusion about what patients should do and when they can be considered well. It all adds to their anxiety, they say.
這種政策上的差異讓患者困惑不已，不知所措，也不知道何時才算痊癒。患者表示，這種情況進一步加深了他們的焦慮感。

sow除了常看到的「播種」，sow也有「引起，導致」之意

【讀WSJ學英文 l 美國撤離駐中國外交官對中美關係之影響 】

面對Monday blue，最好的方法就是學點有趣的時事英文！

WSJ在 3/21有篇文章標題為：

U.S. Drawdown of China Diplomats Cripples Ties at Critical Moment

中譯：美國撤離駐中外交官之舉在關鍵時刻傷害雙邊外交關係

這個標題很有意思。

drawdown的意思就是抽回或減少，在本文的脈絡就是「把原本派駐在中國的外交官調回美國」，在此可以用withdrawal 代替。

cripples ties 就是傷害（雙方）關係， cripple在本句為主要動詞，跟「傷害」同義的還有damage, harm等字。

那為什麼要用cripple呢？其實是為了押韻。

搭配：critical moment 關鍵時刻 （呼叫跟我完全沒有血緣關係的劉寶傑）

cripples ties at critical moment 唸起來有押韻的節奏感，感覺到了嗎？

critical 這個字很好用，它可以指重大的、關鍵的或批判的。

例如當一個人發生重大車禍或生病時， in a critical condition 意思就是「命在旦夕」。

內文擷取：

The consulate general in the city of Wuhan, where the pandemic began, closed in late January. Missions and consulates in Shenyang, Shanghai, Chengdu and Guangzhou are at 20% to 30% of their staffing levels, according to people familiar with the matter. Most of those employees are local Chinese.

中譯：疫情於武漢開始，美國在武漢的總領事館於一月底關閉。至於在瀋陽、上海、成都及廣州的使領館也只留下兩成到三成的人力，知情人士表示。大多數留下的人力為中國當地雇員。

順便跟大家講解一下外交用語：

consulate 領事館
consulate general 總領事館

上述這兩個館館長，我們稱為head of mission。

在領事館的領事，英文就是Consul。

在總領事館的總領事，英文就是Consul General。

新聞中常看到「知情人士指出」，「知情人士」就是people familiar with the matter。

The emptying out of American diplomatic outposts came as relations between the U.S. and China descended to levels of rancor not seen in decades, fed by a two-year trade war and, more recently, finger-pointing over responsibility for the severity and origin of the coronavirus threat.

中譯：美國外交使館的撤離正值中美關係降到數十年來未見冰點之際，雙方關係不睦肇因於長達兩年的貿易戰爭，以及雙方對於冠狀病毒威脅的嚴重性及來源的責任歸屬。

這一段有點難，我們花點時間講深一點。

diplomatic outpost 就是diplomatic mission，這是新聞英文常見的替換語詞。

empty out 跟標題的drawdown，意思接近，可以解釋為「使領館只留下少數人力，所以變得中空」。

relations between the U.S. and China descended to levels of rancor not seen in decades 這句寫得很文雅，考生直接背起來吧！

descend就是下降

rancor (n.) 仇恨，憎恨，深仇
rancorous (a.) 深仇大恨的

rancor 比 hatred 的意思來得更強。

not seen in decades 前面省略了which have not been，完整寫法是 levels of rancor which have not been seen in decades。

fed by 這個子句，前面省略了which is/was/has been。

feed 原意是 餵養，在此的修辭方式是「因為XX原因導致XX」。

finger-pointing over responsibility 互相指著對方，叫對方負起責任。這也是很實用的用法。

Now's not the time for finger-pointing. 現在不是彼此指責的時候。

That Light In Your Heart (English version below)

大日光環普被諸有情，天下萬物賴以生存。由此實為可見，一切的眾生，皆需光的加持，才得以生氣盎然，有著不滅的希望。或許妳你是「怕黑族」，一到了晚上，妳你就不敢走進漆黑的房間，不敢到地下室去，不敢走去廚房，更不敢到衛生間洗澡及如廁，不敢.....。若這等「怕事」已困擾妳你多年，而妳你又難嚮妳你周遭的人啟齒的話，趕緊去找玳瑚師父，他身上的光環絕對能夠幫助妳你，點燃妳你「心房的那盞燈」。

您的意思是說，所有的「怕黑族」，夜裡有諸多的「不敢」，是因為「心房的那盞燈」從未點燃過，是嗎？是的。真是人不可貌相，海水不可斗量啊！問話的妳你，雖也未點燃妳你「心房的那盞燈」，不過多多觀讀玳瑚師父的文章，日後定然不是「省油的燈」啊！吾曾在文章中提過，佛法與生活本來就在一起的，是那些不學無術及無知之輩，硬要把佛法與生活給拆散，未免太「心狠手辣」了吧！

佛的智慧是圓滿而無礙的。祂們的佛像金身就已有好多的智慧，供我們參學，所以我們可別象那些多學，又或者不學無數的人一般見識，說供奉佛像金身，是偶像崇拜哦！因這一說，心房的那盞燈，就更難燃起，「鬼氣」就趁機生起，遲早心中定有鬼，到了嚴重地步時，大白天也說有鬼。真是悲哉，悲哉！如果妳你認識玳瑚師父，且願意去見他，他會樂意助妳你擺脫妳你心房的「鬼影」，還指導妳你，傳授妳你，點燃妳你「心房的那盞燈」，照破黑暗，照破無明。

「怕黑族」所以怕黑，是因為妳你們不知曉，天的黑是暫時的。她他們也不知曉，太陽根本也沒落山啊！再加上貪、瞋、癡、妒、慢、疑，種種不光明磊落的心氣，久而久之，「心房的那盞燈」，就被這種歪風給吹滅了。更何況，夜路走多了，見鬼也怕鬼。多多存想日光，常把日光印在心坎裡，行為象日光般的磊落，「心房的那盞燈」，自然漸漸地燃起，從此告別「怕黑族」。

The greatness of the Sun shines on all sentient beings, and everything under the Sun is reliant on it for survival. It is plain to see that all sentient beings need the empowerment of Light, in order to flourish with inextinguishable hope. Perhaps you belong to the group of people who are afraid of the dark. When night falls, you cannot bring yourself to walk into that pitch-dark room. You dare not go down to the basement. You would not think of entering the kitchen either. And you most certainly would not take a bath or relieve yourself in the washroom. If you are bothered by this phobia for many years and find it difficult to confide in others around you, please find Master Dai Hu immediately. The halos of Light emitting from him can definitely help you ignite that Light in your heart.

"Do you mean to say that all those people are afraid of the dark and suffer from its associated phobia, because the Light in their hearts are never lit?". Yes, that is right. You really cannot judge a book by its cover! Those of you who asked this question may fall under this category too, but if you make more time to read Master Dai Hu's articles, one day, you will find that there is more to you than meets the eye. I mentioned in my previous articles that the Dharma is part of our daily lives, and only those ignorant and unaccomplished persons would tell you otherwise and insist that Dharma has nothing to do with our daily lives. That is just too ruthless!

The wisdom of the Buddha is complete and free from any hindrance. There is so much wisdom to be discovered from the Buddha statues alone for us to contemplate. Thus please do not fall into the company of people, learned or not, who allege that enshrining a Buddha statue is merely idol worship! Just by uttering this statement, it will be even more difficult to ignite the Light in your heart, and darkness will seize the chance to take its place. It is a matter of time that this ghostly energy creeps into your heart. As this negative energy perpetuates in severity, you might even cry out seeing ghost in broad daylight! How pitiful that will be! If you know Master Dai Hu, and is willing to see him, he will gladly help you shake off the ghostly shadow in your heart and guide you to finally ignite that Light in your heart, that will penetrate all darkness and ignorance.

Those people fear the dark because they are not aware that darkness in the skies is only temporary. Neither are they aware that the Sun never sets! Coupled with the afflictions of greed, anger, ignorance, jealousy, arrogance and suspicion, and the many dishonorable thoughts and intents over a period of time, the Light in your heart will be extinguished by this noxious influence. Furthermore, if you walk the path of darkness for too long, you will encounter ghosts and of course, be fearful of them. Visualize often the Light of the Sun, and imprint the Light onto your heart. Act in ways that are as noble as the Sun. In these ways, the Light in your heart will gradually and naturally regain its spark, and you can bade farewell to the days of darkness.
