    有人說才子陶傑前輩用英文寫了一個 post，批評他英文不夠好。看完之後，覺得實在是吹毛求疵，如此水平已經好過很多人了。再者，才子每天寫字多過你呼吸，怎能每篇都寫到完美呢？幸好他這篇沒有用上十成功力，才讓晚輩有機會切磋切磋。紅都面晒，獻醜了。

    陶傑：She called my statements that ‘Boarding schools are there to train leadership rather than refugees’ and ‘Boarding school education is designed for staying calm and team spirit‘ as ‘being sarcastic’.

    (盡量避免 called 或 said 等字，因為詞彙越精準，效果更好，所以用 referred。)

    （這段的問題比較大，上文說 “hardly understands the philosophy” 然後下文說 “apart from being”，邏輯上有點難以理解。除了我的 besides it being，當然用才子的 apart from 也可以；但就算用 apart from 都一定要加 comma 和 “it”，否則是錯。）

    陶傑：Or is it only a matter of multiculturalism that such people tend to attribute all questions based on facts and common sense that they are unable to answer logically to ‘being sarcastic‘?

    葉某：Or perhaps it is merely down to multiculturalism, that when people are unable to understand an argument and respond with common sense and logic, such people tend to disregard facts and dismiss all questions and other opinions as ‘being sarcastic’?

    (同樣也只是 style 問題，但明顯地我的 style 在這個情況下更能清晰表達當中意思。Dismiss 一個字簡單，但語氣強烈，是好字。)

    陶傑：If so, is it exactly the reason why you go to a Western boarding school to avoid asking questions of this kind when you grow up (No, I wouldn’t say ‘avoid being so Chinese’ as it sounds, hm, a bit sensitive as the debate of how a global virus should be accurately name is going on) ?

    葉某：If so, isn’t it exactly the reason why you go to a Western boarding school to avoid responding in this way when you grow up? (I’ve refrained from saying ‘avoid being so Chinese’ as it sounds a bit sensitive whilst the debate of how a global virus should be accurately named is going on)

    (應該是 isn’t it exactly 而不是 is it exactly 吧，我猜是他的 typo 而已。)

    陶傑：Interesting, hey?

    葉某：Food for thought, hey?

    (更寸自然更型，no？)

    陶傑：So, the last thing I’d love to see is you guys staging a street protest demanding my apology and withdrawal of my earlier Facebook message, as Dr Yuen Kwok-yung (or Dr Yuan Guo-Yong) just did. Chinese tend to get boiled up and fuming rather easily nowadays.

    【跨文化營養學分：如何聽懂英文笑話？】

    最近遇到很多人詢問
    要如何才能理解英文笑話？

    老實說
    #幽默 不是一門簡單的學問
    除了必須認識大量的 #英文單字
    或許更難跨越的門檻是 #文化知識

    但是呢
    在此也試圖拆解英文笑話的要素
    歸納成以下三大常見技巧

    -

    1. Sarcasm 反諷

    外國人常面不改色地說反話
    與其直接嗆朋友
    他們更習慣用「稱讚」諷刺對方

    例如：
    Wow, that's fantastic.
    You are oh so smart.

    需要留意對方的語氣跟表情
    不然還真樂得以為被讚美了呢！

    2. Puns 諧音/雙關語

    英文不像中文隨便都能諧音
    因此巧妙的諧音笑話
    往往能令人驚喜地會心一笑
    不然就是蠢得逗人發笑

    像電影《#侏儸紀公園》裡
    小男孩跟主角的對話

    What do you call a blind dinosaur?

    I don't know.

    A Do-you-think-he-saurus.

    是不是很可愛呢？

    這裡的諧音梗是
    Do you think he saw us?
    用聽的會比較容易抓到笑點

    另一方面
    則需要知道很多種類的恐龍
    是以-saurus當字尾的知識

    3. Set-up & Punchline 鋪陳與爆點

    最後一點
    其實算是大部分笑話的架構
    開場先設計一段鋪陳描述
    好讓最後的轉折能成為意外爆點

    【「語言學」、「語言學習」雙角度分析】 BBC 記者的 have sb to thank for 有在諷刺嗎？真的要謝謝維尼嗎？

    因為 BBC 記者在蔡英文總統勝選的國際記者會上所問 "Do you have the Chinese President Xi Jinping to thank for this victory? " 一問題，在網路上引起了眾多的討論。

    • 短短一句包含核心片語 have sb to thank for 的句子，到底為什麼會引起了那麼多的討論？

    今天這篇文章我想從兩部分討論：
    (a) 從「語言學」切入討論文意解讀的複雜性
    (b) 從「語言學習」切入，探討那對於大部分不是要當專業逐步、同步口譯、不是要當英文老師的大家，學習英文時何去何從。

    ✔︎ 該記者有沒有在諷刺？

    (a) 語言學視角

    講話當中，paralinguistic cues (副語言) 也是幫助我們解讀文意很重要的一環。這包含了音量大小、語調、語氣停頓、聲音表情。除此之外，「臉部表情」或是「手勢」這樣的 non-verbal communication 也會幫助我們解讀語意。

    這次事件的複雜性之一就來自於大家對於這位 BBC 記者在說該句話時的聲音和臉部表情，到底有沒有諷刺 (sarcasm) 的意味在裡頭有不同的看法。

    不管是生活、還是比較正式的英文當中，有些表達方式有可能會因為有沒有特別的「副語言」，產生兩種以上意思。

    ➠ 「字面」、「逐字」的方式解讀我們會稱為 denotation (literal meaning)

    ➠ 「衍伸」意義又稱為 connotation (implied meaning, secondary meaning)。

    以 have sb to thank for 為例, Macmillan dictionary 就提供給我們 2 個定義:

    (1) used in a positive way to say who is responsible for something good

    表面上我們看到 thank 就會想到是謝謝，所以第一層字面上含義就可以理解成歸功於、感謝～的意思。

    (2) used in a negative way to say who you blame for something bad

    但字典裡也提供了另外一層比較負面、歸咎的字義了。但因為表面上「字字都看不出有負面、要拼湊起來才有負面」，可以看到這個片語有他的 connotative meaning.

    ⚑ 英文裡有些看似簡單的用法，其實都有其複雜性：

    1️⃣ Tell me about it. 如果一路語調往下降，其實是在應和人家某見不滿的事情。

    2️⃣ That's interesting. 依語調不同，可以是真的表達覺得有趣、也可以是個社交辭令 (實際覺得
    滿口胡言、或覺得不盡正確)。

    3️⃣ Thank you. 若聽到美國人講的是 Thank U. 把重音放在 U 上，很多時候是在反諷 (but not always)。

    4️⃣ You're such a good friend. (一般中文我們講反話，是否這句話也會有兩層意思呢？)

    ✔︎ 英文該怎麼學勒？
    教育部公布的最新課綱，認定高中生要學會 5000 字左右的英文字彙 (有往下調)。但我們仔細想想，have sb to thank for 這每一個字，是否都在 1000 字以內？是的。但我們學了 thank 後就會這個片語的意思嗎？答案是否定的。同樣的大家看看下面幾個用法：

    (a) have one's hands full
    (b) have a lot on one's plate
    (c) out of the blue
    (d) work out on and off

    下面沒有一個用法的單字難度範圍落在 500 字以外。但是為何「字字看得懂，句句看不懂呢？」

    這告訴我們學習英文的時候，要特別注意這些生活常見、口語的片語用法。為了檢定、考試，學完 fall, 學 drop, plummet 是一個方向。但是將已經會的字，做重新的排列組合去學習新的意義，更是另外一個重要但常常被忽略的學習方向。
