In May 2019, Taiwan could potentially be the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage. There are major societal forces on both sides of the question on whether same sex marriage should be legalized, and LGBTQ equality should be the norm in Taiwan.
With these questions being faced, there will be a discussion and screenings of two film on these major societal questions at the FCCT on Monday, September 24th.
There will be a screening of the documentary Queer Taiwan, which features interviews with individuals that support and oppose the legalization of gay marriage in Taiwan. The film specifically focuses on the substantial animosity between the Equality Bees and the Family Guardian Coalition, which has only increased as this hot-button issue has become more prominent in Taiwanese society.
A second film on legality of surrogate pregnancy in Taiwan will also be screened. At present, surrogacy is completely illegal in Taiwan, no matter whether the potential parents are straight or LGBTQ. There is hope in Taiwanese that surrogacy will be a turning point for gay-parents, but many in Taiwanese society continue to believe that surrogacy should not be allowed in Taiwan no matter what the orientation of the parenting couple is.
After the films are shown there will be a discussion on these and other gay-rights issues in Taiwan. The discussion will feature Jennifer Lu, Chief Coordinator of Marriage Equality Coalition Taiwan, which is Taiwan's largest LGBTQ NGO working on gender issues and education. In January 2016, Jennifer ran for a Taiwanese parliament seat as a candidate for the Social Democratic Party. As part of her campaign she was able to raise the visibility of LGBTQ issues in Taiwanese society.
Other panelists include:
Phil Robertson Deputy Director, Asia Division, Human Rights Watch
Mr. Robertson oversees the organization's work throughout Asia, especially in Southeast Asia, North Korea and Japan.
Midnight Poonkasetwattana Executive Director APCOM
Before joining APCOM, Midnight worked for Purple Sky Network where he engaged with MSM and transgender communities in the Greater Mekong areas. He previously supported the implementation of HIV and human rights programmes in various countries throughout Asia and Eastern Europe as part of the International HIV/AIDS Alliance.

感謝三位朋友辛勞的工作,把我那篇記錄自已在泰國被非法扣押十二小時的文章,3000字一句不漏地完整翻譯成英文,現在成功刊登在英國《衛報》。
Thank you my friends contributed to the full translation of my 3,000-word essay describing the 12-hour ordeal in a detention cell, now available on The Guardian.
(希望各位關注事件的朋友,廣傳給你身邊不懂得閱讀中文的外國人,讓他們了解向中共投誠的泰國政府,是如何封錮和打壓前往曼谷交流的香港年輕學生)
It seems that the Thai government feels it has much to fear from youth movements that promote democracy, such as mine in Hong Kong.
But my passport had been taken away, and I had been forbidden to use my phones or computers, so I could not contact anyone. They could do as they pleased. My two requests – to contact a lawyer and for them to explain the legality of their action – were both rejected with a simple “No”.
I criticised them for detaining me without any legal basis as something that was a violation of human rights and they replied: “We’ll tell you why once we have you detained.” I continued to point out that they were violating proper police procedure, but they simply replied: “You know this is Thailand, it’s like China. Not like Hong Kong!”
He was right, I thought. It is like China – not like Hong Kong. After all, the Hong Kong publisher Gui Minhai was kidnapped in Thailand last year and was eventually sent to mainland China.
So after China, Macau and Malaysia, there is now another territory I know I cannot enter. In fact, I still don’t understand why. I have never criticised the Thai government. I was only invited there to share my experiences of being a young man who took part in the umbrella movement. And this led to me being detained as soon as I stepped off the plane and being treated in a way that goes completely against human rights and the law. I spent almost 12 hours in detention and was deprived of my passport and of contact with others.
I am absolutely certain that my unlawful detention by the Thai authorities was motivated by their fear of youth movements around the world.
Indeed, young people right across the globe will only become more united and engaged as our collective yearning for democracy, civil liberties and other universal values strengthens. So too will our commitment to street activism. Our hopes and dreams transcend culture, language, country and political realities.

Nu Skin to pay $47 million to settle Chinese pyramid suit
-

A lawsuit filed by Nu Skin shareholders against the company appears to be drawing to a conclusion.
The class-action lawsuit was filed in February 2014, accusing Nu Skin of misleading investors about the legality of its operations in China.
Chinese media reported suspicions Nu Skin was operating a pyramid scheme in January 2014. A subsequent investigation by Chinese authorities saw Nu Skin fined $781,000.
The class-action lawsuit has been quietly playing out over the past two years, with news yesterday of a potential $47 million dollar settlement.
The settlement, which will be paid by Nu Skin’s insurers, is not expected to result in a net charge to the company’s income statement, Nu Skin said in a filing.
The company said the deal is subject to court approval and a final approval is expected in mid-2016.
The settlement would see an end to class-action lawsuit. The impact on Nu Skin’s global business operations, if any, is as of yet unclear.
Following the shutdown of Nu Skin’s Chinese pyramid scheme, profit plummeted by 63%.
The status of the SEC investigation, purportedly also looking into Nu Skin’s Chinese pyramid scheme operations, remains unclear.
In other Nu Skin news, the company recently lost an appeal in Japan over a customs dispute.
Following the loss in court, Nu Skin are now liable for around $32 million dollars in customs duties.
