    tool 這個字大家都知道，不過我倒是不知道可以這樣用。是個很英式的用法，常用在政治人物身上，說某人是個 complete tool, utter tool，白痴的意思。

    我找了 tool 除了工具外的解釋，真是太太太太適合檳榔了！over-inflated ego，總喜歡 get un-due attention for himself 而且 in his deluded state, he will think it's going to make him look cool, or make others want to be like him！請大家好好看一下解釋，根本是檳榔的最佳寫照！

    dissect: methodically cut up (a body or plant) in order to study its internal parts.

    tool: a guy with a hugely over-inflated ego, who in an attempt to get un-due attention for himself, will act like a jackass, because, in his deluded state, he will think it's going to make him look cool, or make others want to be like him. The person may even insincerely apologize later on, but only in an attempt to get more attention, or to excuse his blatantly intentional, and unrepentantly tool-ish behavior.

    【多說、多寫改善不了的英文口說、寫作問題】

    在幫大家總結 40 年的應用語言學研究之前，請大家猜猜看，都在表達「她對你評價很高」時，哪一句話是美國人說，哪一句話是台灣學生說的呢？

    (a) She gave you a lot of praises.
    (b) She spoke highly of you.

    大多人都能正確地選出 (b) ，但同時也覺得：

    「好像單字記了不少，但就是講不出那樣的英文。而這好像也不是多講就有辦法解決的。」

    【情況分析】

    如果我們今天背單字，只是為了在「選擇題」時選得出來，有時定義背一背(中文也罷、英文也罷)，難一點的題目上下文判斷一下、就能拿到分數。Congratulations.

    但若目的是想要「用得出來」，至少有 2 方面需要我們加深學習，可分成 word-related 和 learning-related：

    1️⃣ Word-related: 除了該字的意思以外，還需要知道發音、拼法 (for 寫作)，我相信這道理像廢話，很多人都了解。

    但 「part of speech (詞性)」、「grammatical
    behavior (文法規範、行為)」和「字詞搭配」更是影響我們有沒有辦法用出來的關鍵。

    ✔︎ 沒有注意「詞性」，我們可能會錯用成"became success" "That was happened yesterday." "You're so fashion." 這樣的錯誤英文。

    ✔︎ 不了解文法規範，我們可能學了 involve (涉及、包含)，也用不出來。可能會亂用成 "She involved deeply in this project."

    2️⃣ Learning-related：無數語言學、認知心理學研究都指出："Repeated exposure" (反覆接觸) 是記好單字很重要的關鍵。

    但這樣的「反覆接觸」，不是在「短時間內一直看一直看」就可以達成。

    有時要在我們學完後，某一天在追劇、看英文雜誌、或和外國老闆開會時，恰巧「再碰到且注意」後，才會加深學習效果。對住在台灣的我們 (自然英文 input 不夠)，是比較困難的。

    【小故事幫助你 / 妳理解】

    像對我來說 speak / think highly of sb (對～有很高的評價)，以前在學習時，也不會覺得這是馬上用得出來的英文。但在哥大念碩一時，有一位 Lindhardsen 教授在走廊上遇到我時，跟我說 "Prof. Han spoke highly of you."

    對我來說那樣的「接觸」，啟動了我的字彙記憶，一口氣讓那個用法從 receptive knowledge (能認、直覺用不出)，轉化成了我的 productive knowledge (用得出)。

    【你 / 妳可以這樣做】

    語言學權威 Stephen Krashen 教授提出來的「窄式學習」，就一次達成了上面2個要件。

    藉由對「同一主題」的東西大量聽、閱讀，讓我們能夠短時間內有很多的「repeated exposure」。也因為對內容的熟悉 (content familiarity)，讓我們更能「有餘力」注意到「part of speech (詞性)」、「grammatical behavior (文法規範、行為)」 和「字詞搭配」等面向。

    上週都在說豬的壞話，這禮拜來為豬豬平反一下～其實豬有許多正向用語，快來瞧瞧～

    1⃣ live (or eat) high on/off the hog
    2⃣ go whole hog
    3⃣go hog wild
    4⃣ hog heaven

    Speaking of pigs, did you know that “hog” is another word for pig? Specifically, a hog is a large pig bred to be eaten. And people eat a lot of pork, so naturally there are lots of hog-related idioms.
    首先，你知道 hog 是豬的別稱嗎？具體來說，hog「肉豬」是指專門飼養來吃的豬。因為大家愛吃豬肉，所以當然有許多跟 hog 有關的生活用語。

    One of the most interesting is 1⃣“live (or eat) high on/off the hog,” which means to live a luxurious, comfortable life. Why does it have this meaning? Because the most expensive cuts of meat come from high on the hog. Ex: Kevin has been living high on the hog since he won the lottery.
    首先，一個最饒富趣味的諺語是 live/eat high on/off the hog，指過著奢華舒適的生活。為什麼會有這個意思呢？因為最貴的豬肉肉品剛好都來自於豬的上半身。如：Kevin has been living high on the hog since he won the lottery.（凱文中樂透之後，就一直過著奢華闊氣的生活。）

    Lots of people enjoy pork, but what if you eat the whole hog? 2⃣ “Go whole hog” means to do something in a very thorough or enthusiastic way. Ex: We decided to go whole hog and stay in the presidential suite. 3⃣You can also “go hog wild,” which means to behave in an uncontrolled and excited manner. Ex: The kids went hog wild while their parents were away on vacation.
    很多人愛吃豬肉，不過若是要你吃下整頭豬呢？go whole hog 指「豁出去做某事；徹底把某件事做完」如：We decided to go whole hog and stay in the presidential suite.（我們決定豁出去住總統套房。）類似用法還有go hog wild，指「興奮過度做過頭」，如：The kids went hog wild while their parents were away on vacation.（爸媽放假出門時，小孩在家裡玩瘋了。）

    We all know about heaven, 4⃣but what is “hog heaven”? It’s a state of idle bliss and contentment. Ex: Sitting on the sofa drinking beer and watching the game, Mike was in hog heaven. And finally, 5⃣there are “road hogs.” Since hogs are known for their greedy behavior, a road hog is someone who “hogs” the road. Ex: I hope the cops give that road hog a ticket.
    我們都知道天堂，但什麼是hog heaven「豬天堂」？就是形容相當愉快滿足的狀態，如：Sitting on the sofa drinking beer and watching the game, Mike was in hog heaven.（坐在沙發上喝啤酒看球賽，麥可就像身處極樂之地一樣。）最後是road hog，豬一向以貪心著稱，所以road hog指的是開車亂搶路的人，如：I hope the cops give that road hog a ticket. （真希望警察給那搶路的駕駛人一張紅單。）
