    There's not just one road to the destination, but many roads. You just need to take the little step that’s right in front of you, and then the next one, and a few years down the track, they will seem like massive achievements.

    I didn’t meet my father until I was 6 years old. My parents had a comfortable, middle-class life in Shanghai, or as close as you could get under communism. But they always wanted to live overseas, and just before I was born, my dad came to Sydney to set things up. I don’t know why, but in the end, my mother and I didn’t join him until I was 6.

    ......小孩子詭異的笑聲歌聲越來越靠近……
    　　寶圓深吸了一口氣，她努力壓抑下慌亂恐懼，低頭手結道印，誦唸起『淨心神咒』──
    　　太上臺星，應變無停，驅邪縛魅，保命護身
    　　智慧明淨，心神安寧，三魂永久，魄無喪傾
    　　----淨心神咒為八神咒之首，為修道之人早晚課及學練符法時，清淨身心安神之咒，能使凡心入於冥寂，觀返道心並有保護魂魄之用。
    　　她不斷默默誦唸著，不知不覺間，額心有一小簇明光隱隱約約點亮了，寶圓渾然不知，只感覺自己驚狂的恐懼慢慢消褪而去，取而代之的是猶如身處熟悉松林道觀中的寧靜祥和。
    　　百年破舊晦暗的美國礦工醫院內各處影子卻開始劇烈扭曲了起來，牆壁上開始爭相流出了紅黑色的血淚……
    　　小孩子們的童謠聲也穿雜著顫抖尖銳刺耳的哭泣……

    　　「別怕。」她突然輕緩地開口，軟嫩的嗓音乾淨而溫柔，小心翼翼用著笨拙的英文問：「呃，Did……Did anything happen？（發生了什麼事？）」
    　　話聲甫落，剎那間眼前畫面又是一變──
    　　……荒涼破敗的礦工醫院忽然嶄新明亮了起來，周遭開始有無數美國男女老幼穿著上世紀三零年代的服飾。
    　　男人們沾上風沙灰塵的格子襯衫和吊帶長褲，女人們著樸素耐穿的棉布衣裙，小孩子們宛如天使稚氣紅嫩的臉龐，天真無邪又滿是依賴地仰望著他們的父母……
    　　留著絡腮鬍的灰髮醫師和年輕親切護士也穿梭在其間，一一為這些個家人們送上了一個小藥杯，醫師彷彿很受礦工和其家屬們的信任，好幾個礦工大漢親暱地和交談，偶而互相拍打著對方的肩背，說說笑笑。
    　　可以看得出來礦工們的日子過得很艱辛，他們粗糙的手上都有著長年洗不去的黑色煤灰堆積，時不時咳嗽著，面上卻仍然透著對生活的美好想望，在奮鬥努力下的強悍與樂觀快樂。
    　　寶圓這時候就很後悔自己為何沒有好好學英文，多多背單字，以至於她也只能連猜帶矇的揣度著眼前的『劇情』。
    　　──如果，如果可以聽懂他們在說什麼就好了。
    　　她心念乍起，下一刻不可思議的奇蹟發生了！
    　　就像原本沒有字幕而導致觀看得霧煞煞的外國電影，瞬間卻出現了中文字幕，她竟神奇地懂了他們的對話內容──
    　　「約翰醫生，謝謝您通知我們。」其中一個紅髮礦工大漢嗓音粗豪地感謝著那位絡腮鬍醫師。
    　　「約瑟夫，別客氣，你們都是我多年的病患和好友，我們就像家人一樣。」灰髮的約翰醫生笑得慈祥，而後親手把一個小藥杯遞給了紅髮約瑟夫，另一個護士也將水杯準備好了。「來，吃下了這顆預防並且還能治療塵肺病的特效藥，以後上工就不用擔心了。」
    　　「這真是太好了。」紅髮約瑟夫粗獷的臉上露出喜悅和隱隱淚光，驚喜顫抖的粗糙大手接過小藥杯，將裡頭那顆新的特效藥一仰吞嚥下去，連配服的水也不用。
    　　其他礦工和婦人們也紛紛感激涕零地接下了這顆約翰醫生拚盡全力為他們爭取而來的特效藥，人人競相吞服。
    　　小孩子們也一樣被勸說著哄誘著吃藥。
    　　寶圓本能感覺到不對勁，在1930年代就有治療塵肺病的特效藥了嗎？更何況還能用來……預防？
    　　而且通常婦女和孩子們是不允許進入礦坑工作的，所以他們很大的程度上不會接觸到大量礦坑內汙濁和含有煤炭灰的危險空氣，就算不小心會在出工歸來還沒洗澡換衣的丈夫或父親身上也吸入了煤炭灰，但也不至於需要擔心塵肺病的問題吧？
    　　她總覺得哪裡怪怪的，可是絞盡腦汁也想不出來究竟問題出在哪？
    　　寶圓就在這時看到了有四個小朋友偷偷地假裝吃了藥，其實是把藥丸藏在了袖子或褲袋裡。
    　　小朋友們討厭吃藥是最正常不過的事了，所以寶圓也沒多想……
    　　可過不了多久，吃過藥的人們忽然紛紛昏厥了過去，那三四個小朋友嚇呆了，他們害怕地死命揪著父母的衣袖或裙腳，嗚咽著想叫醒父母，卻看到慈祥和藹的約翰醫生和親切的護士們眼神奇異地望著這一幕，嘴角露出一抹詭異得意的笑容。
