// I'm somewhat of a “literalist,” because I'm for truth and accuracy.

    所以,〔something/somewhat of a + 名詞〕這說法意思是:

It's a rather useful English expression. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, not even a native speaker.

    前幾天,英文社團另一人發問:請問《大亨小傳》(The Great Gatsby)最後一句話So we beat on...裡的「beat on」和「borne back」這兩個動詞片語怎麼理解。

    那一位愛潑冷水的人,竟然說:這是不合時宜的說法了,如果你說了這種英文,別人會聽不懂。

    我對此人老是澆熄別人學習的好奇,真的很感冒,想嗆回去說:見鬼了!這兩個詞,根本沒有過時,只不過是高級的、稍微高語域(high register)的英文,其中beat on又牽涉特殊的譬喻用法,任何努力想學到好英文的人都可以認識一下。

    * * *

    以下分享一個「something of a」的翻譯,因爲我又誤打誤撞,隨便在半夜的街頭一顆石頭,也能擊中一個非常爆笑的瞎譯(用【……】標示)。這位「翻譯逆反者」,是跟賴慈芸、洪蘭等人齊名的老牌譯者廖月娟,得過幾次翻譯獎,那又如何?那些評審眼睛不知長哪裡去了。想練習辨認如撿到鑽石般驚喜的誤譯,順便讀一下英文小說的朋友,可以用英中對照的方式閱讀以下廖譯的小說:

    《雅各的千秋之年》by David Mitchell
    《狼廳》by Hilary Mantel
    《幽冥的火》by Vladimir Nabokov
    其實《蘿拉的原型》by Vladimir Nabokov 也是(原作未完成,此書比較不好消化)

    同理,若想一邊鑑賞目不暇給的謬誤和不精確翻譯的示範,一邊吸收翻譯理論的朋友,則建議英中對照閱讀賴慈芸譯的:

    《探索翻譯理論》by Anthony Pym
    《翻譯教程》by Peter Newmark

    警告:大家請把嘴裡的飯或飲料吞進喉嚨再往下看,嗆到概不負責。

    書名:The Mind's Eye 看得見的盲人
    作者:Oliver Sacks (願您安息!)

// Medieval manuscripts such as the Book of Kells or the Lindisfarne Gospels, for example, contain exquisitely intricate designs done so exactly that whole pages can be seen, 〖with the unaided eye〗, in stereoscopic relief. (John Cisne, a paleobiologist at Cornell, has suggested that such stereograms may have been “【something of a trade secret】 among the educated élite of the seventh- and eighth-century British Isles.”)

    中古時期的手抄本,如《凱爾經》 或是拉丁文手抄本福音書《林迪斯芳福音書》,都有無比華麗的裝飾圖案,〖即使不藉由光學鏡片之助〗,也能看到立體圖形。(康乃爾大學古生物學家西斯奈〔John Cisne〕認為這種立體圖形或許是七、八世紀不列顛群島的菁英人士【交換祕密訊息的一種方式】。) //

    後記:
    1 感謝一位譯者指出,以上用〖……〗標註另一個翻譯問題,詳見留言。
    2 有人留言說,trade secret 這麼簡單的英文都錯,會不會是機器翻譯?我說:機譯可能不會錯,人腦秀逗比較可能。立刻用谷歌翻譯印證:

    //例如,諸如凱爾斯書或林迪斯法恩福音書之類的中世紀手稿包含精美復雜的設計,所以完全可以用肉眼看到整個頁面的立體浮雕。 (康奈爾大學的古生物學家John Cisne認為,這種立體圖可能是“七八世紀不列顛群島受過良好教育的精英中的商業秘密。”)//

    「肉眼」和「商業祕密」(或曰商業機密)兩處都比人肉做的譯者高明!

    翻譯原則珠璣語錄

    (易讀版連結見留言)

I am somewhat of a ‘literalist’, because I am for truth and accuracy.
——Peter Newmark, ‘A Textbook of Translation’, 1988

Translation ‘should be as faithful as possible, and as free as necessary.’
——P. Cauer, ‘Art of Translation’ (‘Die Kunst des Übersetzens’), 1914.

What is first and most needful is that the translation should be correct, that the thoughts should be rendered by their correspondents, not falsified or mutilated or amplified by extraneous matter.
——J. P. Postgate quoting (perhaps translating too) Friedrich Blass on ‘Die Überselzungen’, Hermeneutik und Kritik, volume I of Iwan Mueller’s ‘Handbuch der klassischen Altertums-Wissenschaft’

By general consent, though not by universal practice, the prime merit of a translation proper is Faithfulness, and he is the best translator whose work is nearest to his original.
——J. P. Postgage, ‘Translation and Translations : Theory and Practice’, 1922

[I]n communicative as in semantic translation, provided that equivalent-effect is secured, the literal [1] translation is not only the best, it is the only valid method of translation. There is no excuse for unnecessary ‘synonyms’, let alone paraphrases, in any type of translation.
——Peter Newmark, ‘Approaches to translation’, 1981

In contrast to word-for-word translation, literal translation, which is set up bidirectional (not unidirectionally, as is the case with non-literal translation) , is a translation procedure which, under certain circumstances, is totally acceptable stylistically.
——Wolfram Wilss, ‘The Science of Translation: Problems and Methods’, 1981

Translation is in essence a compromise, and its course a zigzag. Its deviations from the straight the Translator with singleness of purpose will reduce to a minimum, while the free ‘Verter’ with one eye on the reader and the other more than half on himself will be tempted to extend them till they correspond to the large vistas of Beauty and Truth that these obliquities of vision can command. Such a one may ‘vert’ as much and as freely as he pleases; but if he seeks the humble title of a ‘translator’ he must change his methods or renounce his claim.
——J. P. Postgage, Translation and Translations : Theory and Practice, 1922
