#斯卡羅沒說的斯卡羅故事

酒保想跟各位酒友們(?)分享一個延伸小故事⋯⋯
.
▎其實真正的 #李仙得，是位 #獨眼俠，也就是這張合照的正中間遮著左眼的那位。

—————————說故事時間—————————

1898年，從臺灣返鄉退休的英國人 William Alexander Pickering，完成了一本書Pioneering in Formosa. Recollections of adventures among mandarins, wreckers, & head-hunting savages
.
敘述著他過去三十年前在福爾摩沙島上闖蕩的種種故事，書中他曾提過一件事，大概發生經過是這樣：
.
他曾與幾個外國人一起走進瑯嶠，還帶著他們住進了當地漢人的家中，並在這戶人家的旁邊搭設營帳，作為隊伍中一個美國將軍的臨時辦公處所。
.
而這位將軍不久前，才和瑯嶠的斯卡羅人領袖 #卓杞篤 談判達成了一些協議，但卻因為當地的漢人在他們造訪瑯嶠大肆飲宴，每個人都喝掛了，包括斯卡羅人，所以根本沒有人可以進行簽約，讓這群老外拿到白紙黑字回去交差。

幾天過後，他覺得再這樣下去也不是辦法，於是他找上將軍討論，#兩人想出了一個計謀。
.
首先他先把剛從宿醉中慢慢清醒過來的斯卡羅人找進將軍的臨時辦公處，同時讓將軍故作生氣的樣子。
.
而自己再趕緊在一旁擔任翻譯角色，告訴斯卡羅人：『親愛的弟兄們，再這樣拖延下去，將軍可要生氣啦！大家動作這麼慢，他真的會發脾氣喔！我告訴你們，這位將軍可不是普通人，他如果生氣，就會做出很可怕的事情……』

最後再讓將軍伸出手把自己左邊的眼睛，摘了下來用力放到了桌上。後來被嚇到的斯卡羅人很快就跟他們進行了簽約。

根據 Pickering 的說法，這個計畫非常有效，也因為任務成功， Pickering 獲得了清國臺灣鎮總兵 #劉明燈 的稱讚，劉明燈還特別幫Pickering取了一個漢文名字 #必麒麟，還特地解釋麒麟是一種神聖又神秘的靈獸，只有在偉大聖賢誕生時才會出現。

而上面提到把左眼挖出來的美國將軍，正是李仙得。
.
當然啦，李仙得並沒有為了簽約成功活生生挖出了自己的眼珠，他挖出的其實是玻璃義眼，李仙得過去因為 #參與1860年代的美國南北戰爭，導致左眼受傷成了獨眼俠。

▎值得注意的是這個故事，都只是必麒麟單方的說法，描述他三十年前的回憶。

駐廈門領事李仙得，也曾相當完整地整理了自己與斯卡羅人的協商報告，但挖眼球計畫、斯卡羅喝醉無法簽約的情節，#並沒有在李仙得的報告當中。而且按照李仙得的說法，他們與斯卡羅人真正簽訂紙上盟約，其實發生在兩年後。
.
這也讓我們懷疑：必麒麟在書裡所講述的那些故事，究竟有多少可信度，還是只是想呈現他覺得的「文明」與「野蠻」的樣子？
.
不過歷史總是由多個視角的故事構成的，必麒麟的視角、當事人的視角，是我們閱讀歷史的其中一個方式。戲劇和小說，或許是另一種方式。這篇提到的人物「李仙得、必麒麟、卓杞篤」，在戲劇《斯卡羅》中都擔任了重要的角色，只是劇中的李仙得沒有義眼，而他與「蝶妹」之間的故事也屬於改編創意。

但不論是《斯卡羅》的劇情、必麒麟的回憶、李仙得的報告，都是各自從不同視角出發，闡述不同版本的故事。或許歷史的真實，就夾藏在這些不同角度的故事交互辯證之中，等我們挖掘。

臺灣的戒嚴時期，還是在1996年政府決定鎮壓幾個團體的時候，還是在中國大陸，當局不認可的宗教和心靈團體都被貼上了 #邪教 的標籤。這個說法在英文中常被翻譯成 “cult(異端的宗教信仰或崇拜)”，或 “xie jiao(邪教)”，但翻譯並不準確，而且有些不合時宜。
　　　
There is, however, another possibility. Both in Taiwan, during the Martial Law period and when the government decided to crack down on several groups in 1996, and in Mainland China, religious and spiritual movements the authorities do not approve of are labeled xie jiao. The expression is often translated in English as “cults,” or “evil cults,” but the translation is not precise and somewhat anachronistic.
　
倫敦大學研究員吳俊卿發表了多篇關於邪教概念歷史的研究，包括《曼達林與異端》（Leiden：Brill，2017）一書。其他學者將邪教作為一個政治和法律範疇可以追溯到明代，而吳曉波則表明，它最早出現在 #唐代 要求消滅佛教的傅毅（554-639）的著作中，具有 “異教 “的含義。此後的宋（960-1279年）、元（1279-1368年）兩朝，則以「白蓮教」為 #共同標籤，呼籲消滅被禁止的新宗教運動。到了明朝（1368-1644年），邪教成為一個法律概念，並開始編制邪教名單，清朝（1644-1912年）、民國、共產黨都延續了這一做法，也影響了臺灣。
　　
Wu Junqing, a research fellow at London University, has published several studies on the history of the notion of xie jiao, including the book Mandarins and Heretics (Leiden: Brill, 2017). While other scholars date the introduction of xie jiao as a political and legal category to the Ming era, Wu shows that it first appeared, with the meaning of “heterodox teachings,” in the writings of Fu Yi (554–639), who called for the eradication of Buddhism during the Tang dynasty. In the subsequent Song (960–1279) and Yuan (1279–1368) dynasties, xie jiao was used to call for the destruction of new religious movements banned under the common label of “White Lotus.” With the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), xie jiao became a legal concept, and lists of xie jiao started being compiled, a practice continued by the Qing dynasty (1644–1912), Republican, and Communist China, and which also influenced Taiwan.

I had weddings both in Singapore and Japan so I made this comparison video. Marriage traditions and customs can be quite different in both countries. Watch till the end to find out some of the differences!

My most memorable experience was preparing for Guo Da Li (As shown on 03:19). It's a Chinese tradition where the groom gives gifts such as pig trotters, alcohol, cash and mandarins to show respect and seek approval of marriage. In return, my parent in laws returned back some of the gifts, and also gave my wife and I golden rings. This is called Hui Li（回礼） and it's meant to share good fortune.
Having a Shinto-style wedding (called the Shinzen-shiki 神前式) in Japan was also memorable. It's the most traditional style of wedding in Japan but ironically, most Japanese couples prefer chapel-style weddings.
