納達爾 15 歲的時候有一次和一位選手在打練習賽。他的教練托尼（也是納達爾的叔叔）剛好帶著另一位選手在別的球場比賽，不在納達爾的身邊。托尼教練從遠遠的發現，納達爾以 0 比 5 的局數落後，他心想，奇怪了，這個對手並不是那麼強啊。

這時一位托尼教練的朋友（之前也是網球選手）走到托尼教練的身邊，對他說：「我想納達爾的球拍壞了，他拿一支壞掉了的球拍在比賽。」於是，托尼教練走向納達爾的球場，對納達爾說：「我想你的球拍壞了。」納達爾看了看手中的球拍發現：「對耶！這裡都裂開了，我來換一支。」換了球拍之後，比賽開始轉變，不過，納達爾最後還是以 0-6、5-7 輸了那場練習賽。

重點來了！比賽結束後，托尼教練問納達爾：「請你告訴我，你打了那麼多年的球，怎麼居然會沒有發現自己的球拍壞了？」納達爾的回答很簡單，他說：「聽著，我總是被唸到輸球是我的責任。我從來沒想過會是球拍出了問題。」

遇到事情，先從自己找原因，這是納達爾從小被教導的，並且持續堅持的信念。

所有的競爭都是自己和自己的戰鬥，納達爾就是那種專注在和自己競爭的人。總有地方可以進步，輸了球摸摸鼻子，再繼續訓練。現實就是這樣，這樣的現實也正是奮戰的理由。與其白花力氣去怪罪別人和外在的事物，不如全力逼出最好的自己。

君子求諸己，是一種極高也極難的修養。這是納達爾的方法。如果你欣賞納達爾，相信他的這一個態度是很值得學習的榜樣。

普立茲獎得主約翰．麥克菲（John McPhee）有一本頗受好評的非虛構作品《Levels of the Game》，藉由描寫 1968 年一場克拉克．格拉布納（Clark Graebner）與亞瑟．艾許（Arthur Ashe）的網球比賽，也探究球員的背景和態度，以及是什麼塑造了一位球員和一位頂尖球王。

麥克菲在書中有一句話寫道：「一個網球選手的性格和成長背景，會通過個人的運動機制（motor mechanisms），表現為他的擊球模式和比賽風格。如果他是一個謹慎的人，他就是一個謹慎的網球選手；如果他是一個浮誇炫耀的人，那麼他就是一個浮誇炫耀的網球選手。」

堅決遵守你所相信的美好信念，即使有時候正確的事是相對困難的，即使是小事，即使別人都不是這麼做的，也不要緊。畢竟，如果大家都一個樣的做，那麼能夠超出別人獲得成功的理由又在哪裡呢？

日本電影大師小津安二有句名言：「無謂的事追隨流行，重大的事遵從道德，藝術則聽從自己的聲音。」

在對自己很重要的事情上，徹底展現你的執著。在對自己很重要的事情上， 聽自己的，做你自己就好。

做自己，不僅是因為「其他人的角色都已經有人飾演了」（王爾德說的）；更是因為我們的自我定位，我們獨有的堅持遵守的信念（或細節），也可能在某個時刻，以更有說服力的方式成為另一個人的啟發，激勵他做到自己以為辦不到的事。

正如納德爾的故事帶給我們鼓舞的力量。
