Gyatei This phrase that is repeated at the climax of the devotional chant, the Heart Sutra, is notable in that while each element of the rest of the sutra has a meaning, it is understood as a chant devoid of meaning, signifying nonsensical screams. Alternatively, some say it signifies the cry of an infant and therefore it means that one is reborn at the end of the devotional chant. The material on which I am now affixing my ramblings is a painting canvas, and the genre that permits such an act is contemporary art. I think the main purpose of the post-war contemporary art world has been to perform and present the deconstruction and reintegration of art historical contexts by rendering them esoteric puzzles. And in the past, only the artists from the victorious nations were allowed to dally with constructions and deciphering of such puzzles. As an artist from Japan, the defeated nation, I was ineligible to even participate. But starting around the mid-90s, a momentum emerged in the art world to take a more generous stance and embrace the entire world, and the doors were miraculously opened for stragglers like myself, permitting us to sit at the far end of the table. In time, the era of the internet arrived; the market sped up and already crashed once. Now there is little area of secrecy left in all sorts of information. Especially in art, the focus on the speculations about and probing of various contexts is shrinking; the market madness has quieted down and the mythical value of art itself has plunged, making art more universal. This has been a major development. I have secretly cringed that the “Superflat" world I had half-heatedly proposed had become a reality. The recent theme for me in creating artwork has been the formation of new types of ego and the loss of substance in communication caused by social media; I have been trying to capture these things, along with the changing flow of desires entangled in them, in order to redirect them into artworks.
