The pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong has already lasted for more than 9 months and is showing no signs of stopping. Last year, the city once mobilized 2 million (nearly a third of the city's population) citizens to take over the streets. Attempting to solve the political crisis, the Government relies on the riot police to oppress the dissidents violently. The justification of such actions is still up for debate: legitimate tactics, police brutality or a rapid rise of authoritarianism?
.
Responding to the matter, the Chinese-born actress Liu Yifei posted the following on her official Weibo account last August: "I support the Hong Kong police. You can all attack me now. What a shame for Hong Kong". The hashtag #BoycottMulan became trending on Twitter immediately. Users accused the actress of supporting police brutality and pointed out the fact that she's an American citizen.

So what's the fuss? Mulan is a legendary/fictional female warrior from the Northern and Southern dynasties period of Chinese history. Mulan has long been seen as a symbol of courage, heroine and rebellion. Yes, Mulan defied the rules. She came forward to serve in the army in her father's place. She disguised herself as a man because she believed sending her ill father to the battlefield was unjust. Nerve wracking it is to see how the symbol is distorted having one of the most well-known rebels in Chinese culture portrayed by Liu.
