Summary:
Rather than sensing a trap that buying a house could not be child’s play as such, a Florida man actually thought he scored himself a real bargain when he was successful with an online bid of US$9,100 (~HK$71,000) for a villa, which was behind the actual property for auction. On the bright side, he is now the proud owner of a thin strip of grass between two houses; on the downside, that area is worth a mere US$50 and a refund is an unlikely possibility.

ビジネスっぽい英語の「承認する」や「許可する」

仕事において上司が部下に何かしらの許可を与えることを日本語では「承認する」や「承諾する」と表現しますが、英語ではどのように表現するのかご存知でしょうか？今回はアメリカのビジネスシーンで、よく使われている英語表現をご紹介しようと思います。

1) Give _____ the green light
→「〜を承認する / 〜に許可を与える」

Green lightは青信号を意味することから、この表現を直訳すると「〜に青信号を与える」になることからもイメージできるかと思いますが、車が青信号で発車する様子を比喩的に表現しています。基本的にビジネスシーン全般において、「承認する」や「許可を与える」などの意味として用いられるイディオムです。
✔「Give the green light for/to _____」と表現してもOK。
✔「許可を得る」はGiveをGetに置き換えて「Get the green light」と表す。
＜例文＞
We are hoping the headquarters will give us the green light.
（本部が承認することを期待しています。）
We got the green light to start the project.
（プロジェクト開始の許可を得ました。）
〜会話例〜
A: Our affiliate company hasn't given us the green light yet.
（まだ関連会社の承認を得ていません。）

「どうぞ」や「進む」を意味する「Go ahead」をGiveする、つまりゴーサインを出すことを意味する表現です。上記の「Give the green light」と用法も意味も全く同じです。特にビジネスの場でよく耳にする言い方で、基本、「give the go-ahead for _____.」もしくは「give the go-ahead to _____.」の二つのパターンが使われます。
✔「Give _____ the go-ahead」と表現してもOK。
✔「〜から許可をもらう」は「get the go-ahead from _____.」
＜例文＞
I gave the go-ahead to start the campaign.
（キャンペーンをスタートすることを許可しました。）
Upper management gave the go-ahead for the app development team to launch the project.
（上層部が、アプリ開発チームにプロジェクトをスタートすることを承認しました。）
〜会話例〜
A: Tell the members to sit tight until we get the go-ahead.
（許可が出るまでメンバーに待つようお伝えください。）
B: OK. I'll let them know.
（了解です。伝えておきます。）

→「許可する / 承認する」

「許可」や「承諾」を意味する名詞「Permission」、または承認や同意をすることを意味する動詞「Approve」を使って表現しても勿論問題ありません。Permissionを使う場合は、「Give permission to _____（〜を許可する）」、または「Give someone permission to _____（誰々に〜の許可を出す）」の形式で表現するのが一般的です。
＜例文＞
I gave him permission to leave early today.
（彼に早退の許可を出しました。）
Who gave you permission to enter this building?
（この建物に入る許可は誰からもらったんだ？）
〜会話例〜
A: Do you think it's likely the advertising budget will get approved?
（その広告予算は承諾されますかね？）
B: Considering the state of the company, I think it's unlikely.
（現在の会社の状態を考えたら、無理でしょうね。）
