這段話的翻譯，我覺得要能達到溝通目的，必須慎選change的中譯，造成我們知道原文所要的明確的意思，而不是靠

a. 無法改變身邊的人
b. 身邊的人可以改變

這兩種次序的改變，因爲b對我來說，「改變」的最明顯解讀(the salient reading)是不及物動詞，也就是說，相信大多讀者會跟我一樣解讀爲：身邊的人會自己改變。（不及物用法）而這不是原文要表達的，故不是中譯的好選擇。原文很明顯的在說：

你無法改變(change)身邊的人 （改變=及物）
但你可以掉換(change)身邊的人 （掉換=及物）

這是change兩層意思造成的語趣。說到最後，一切操之在我，不求他人，我們自己可以主動選擇與誰爲伍。

常見的一句話：
We decide who we surround ourselves with.
我們自己決定與誰爲伍。
（~ 近朱者赤、近墨者黑。）

Arthur最後說，這話模棱兩可，可以選擇兩種意思的其一來解讀/翻譯。但我認爲這話只能有一個解讀，也就是如上所述。

以下這個解讀：

雖然字面上可能，語用上(pragmatically speaking)卻很難成立。

當一個人說 you cannot A, but you can B，聽者必定（除非有很特殊的語境來阻擋這個解讀）解讀為：

A 比 B 困難，所以即使 A 做不到，B 卻可行。

加上，凡人的一個普遍的認知是：

改變一個人很難(A)，遠離一個人容易(B)。

如果第二個解讀要成立，必須接受：

遠離一個人很難，改變那個人比較容易。

我想幾乎沒有人會認同這說法。所以這句話在實際的溝通上，只有一個意思。確立它的意思後，再找中譯的對策，是比較穩妥的翻譯方法。
