The site of last season's biggest win was the site of this season's first loss for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Philadelphia's franchise-record, season-opening, 10-game winning streak came to an unceremonious end as the 76ers played poorly and were routed, 88-73, by the Charlotte Hornets.

The 76ers were the NBA's last unbeaten team but were far from perfect tonight. They never led, shot just 34 percent (28-of-82) from the field, were outrebounded 60-39 and trailed by as many as 22 points.

"They weren't going to go 82-0," Hornets center Elden Campbell said. "They had to get a loss sometime."

Allen Iverson, whose willingness to involve his teammates in the offense was one of the reasons for Philadelphia's success, had his worst game of the season. The All-Star scored a season-low seven points on 3-of-17 shooting as he never got untracked.

"Iverson missed a lot of shots," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "If he's missing, it's good, but if he's making shots it's a different story."

"Allen Iverson is a phenomenal player," Campbell said. "We just tried to stay in front of him. We wanted him to take tough shots."

In Game One of last season's Eastern Conference first-round playoff series, Iverson scored 40 points to lead the Sixers to an upset win. Philadelphia went on to win the series in four games.

"We saw this as a game we needed to win to keep our winning streak alive," Charlotte swingman Eddie Robinson said. "We didn't look at them as far as their win streak. We just wanted to beat them. We knew they were 10-0 but that didn't really factor into it."

Although the Sixers were bad, the Hornets also were pretty good. En route to their third straight win, they used their muscle to open a 10-point halftime lead, then found the range by shooting 59 percent (10-of-17) in the third quarter.

"I think they were great defensively, executed phenomenally and took us out of everything we wanted to do," Sixers coach Larry Brown said. "They played better than any team we played against all year and deserved to win."

Charlotte guard Baron Davis notched the first triple-double of his career with 12 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds. It was the first by a Hornet since Anthony Mason against Toronto on March 31 of last season.

"We're coming together," Davis said. "We have to realize we're a defensive team first and we can get a lot of easy baskets when our defense is clicking."

Campbell scored a season-high 22 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked eight shots for the Hornets, who improved to 32-15 all-time against the Sixers, including 19-6 at home.

Neither team shot well in the first half as Charlotte managed 33 percent (14-of-43) while holding Philadelphia to 31 percent (13-of-42). Campbell scored 14 points as the Hornets pushed around the Sixers and opened a 42-32 lead.

Philadelphia made a half-hearted surge at the beginning of the third quarter, closing to 47-39 on a layup by George Lynch. But Charlotte responded with a 16-2 run that featured five points each by Davis and Jamal Mashburn.

A follow shot by Davis gave the Hornets their largest lead at 63-41 with 3:49 remaining. Mashburn scored 10 points in the third period, which ended with Charlotte holding a 69-53 bulge.

Mashburn had 16 points and 11 rebounds and P.J. Brown added 10 and 14 for the Hornets, who shot 39 percent (31-of-80) overall. Mashburn handed out seven assists.

Eric Snow, Matt Geiger and Vernon Maxwell scored 10 points each for the Sixers. Iverson was held below double figures for just the 12th time in 285 career games.

Carmelo Anthony can't miss these days. His hot streak couldn't have come at a better time for the Denver Nuggets.

Anthony scored 36 points to give him 121 in the last three games, and the Nuggets routed the injury-plagued Los Angeles Clippers 117-99 Tuesday night to remain tied with Golden State for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff berth. They meet Thursday night in Oakland.

"Two good teams who deserve to go to the playoffs are going to battle on Thursday night," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "When this thing all started evolving six or eight weeks ago, I remember circling the game with Golden State. We could get in [to the playoffs] if we don't win. It could give us a big leg up if we do win."

Anthony, the NBA's fourth-leading scorer, shot 13-of-17 from the field and 9-of-12 from the foul line in 33 minutes, He left with 5:14 remaining and the Nuggets comfortably ahead.

"He's on a hot roll," Karl said. "Tonight his power and presence in the paint was presented early. When [Clippers coach Mike] Dunleavy went small to begin the game, it hurt them a little bit."

Anthony has shot 49-of-72 while averaging just over 40 points in the last three games.

"It's got to be like that Thursday," the 6-foot-8 forward said. "I've got confidence it will be like that Thursday. It's a big game for us. Do I believe we have to win? No. But it's a must-win for us."

Allen Iverson added 21 points, seven rebounds and nine assists, Linas Kleiza scored 15 points, and Marcus Camby had 13 points and 18 rebounds for the Nuggets (47-31), who snapped a two-game losing streak to teams already out of postseason contention.

"Our backs were against the wall," Anthony said. "We had to get this one."

The Nuggets, who took command in the second quarter, shot 51 percent and outrebounded the Clippers 53-40. They led 63-47 at halftime and the Clippers weren't closer than 14 points in the second half.

"We played a good quarter and a half, but then we did not have a good answer for Carmelo," Dunleavy said. "He really had it going tonight with his mid-range face-up game, which made it hard to double-team him. Unfortunately, in the second quarter, we turned the ball over and gave them too many points off turnovers, the second-chance points. That's how they were able to built the lead up on us."

Cuttino Mobley led the Clippers (23-54) with 25 points. Elton Brand, playing his fourth game after missing the season's first 74 while recovering from surgery on his torn left Achilles tendon, added 17 and Quinton Ross scored 10.

"Once we get healthy, it won't be like this again," Brand said. "We have the talent, we just have to get it on the court."

The Clippers, who have lost 22 of their last 26 games, played without starters Chris Kaman (sprained right ankle) and Corey Maggette (strained right hamstring). Tim Thomas returned after missing five games with a sore Achilles tendon and had seven points and five rebounds.

Denver's Nene missed his second straight game due to a strained right groin.

Two baskets by Anthony and a three-point play by Iverson gave the Nuggets a 79-55 lead midway through the third quarter. The Clippers scored the last seven points of the period to trim Denver's lead to 91-74, but never threatened in the final period.

Iverson scored nine points during a 16-5 run that gave the Nuggets a 44-36 lead, and they were on top the rest of the way. The Clippers drew within three before Denver used a 17-4 spurt to finish the second quarter for its 16-point halftime lead.

Anthony needed only 10 minutes to reach double figures, making it a franchise-record 203 straight games that he's accomplished that feat. Anthony scored 13 points in the first quarter, which ended with the teams tied 23-all. He shot 6-of-8 in the period while his teammates went 4-of-15.

Kenyon Martin couldn't believe the box score, so he doesn't expect anybody else to, either.

"A lot of people are going to think it's a misprint," Martin said. "A lot of people will think there's no way they scored that many points. It's unbelievable. There are no words for it."

The Nuggets set NBA season highs for points in a half with 84 and points in a game with a 168-116 rout of the Seattle SuperSonics on Sunday night. Denver set a franchise record for most points in a regulation game and fell just 16 points shy of the franchise record for points in a game.

"There was no way that I couldn't enjoy the game, not from the way we played offensively," Nuggets coach George Karl said.

The Nuggets had eight players score in double figures, led by Carmelo Anthony's 26 and Allen Iverson's 24. Martin had 23 points and Marcus Camby had a triple-double with 13 points, 15 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists.

Still, the only thing the players could talk about was the 168 points they scored in a franchise-record 52-point win.

"I've never been a part of a game like this where we won by so many points and scored so many points," Camby said. "This is definitely a game I'm going to keep in my archives."

Seattle would rather forget this one. After giving up 138 points to Denver in a 42-point loss on Feb. 27 -- which was also the previous high for points in the NBA this season -- the SuperSonics had no chance to redeem themselves Sunday. They gave up an NBA season-high 48 points in the first quarter and trailed by 19 after the first 12 minutes.

It didn't get any better in the second. Denver eclipsed Phoenix's record of 80 points in a half with 1:31 left before the break, and at halftime the Nuggets led by 26. They led by as many as 55 in the fourth quarter.

"We just lost tonight. We lost by a lot," said Seattle forward Chris Wilcox, who had 17 points. "That's just something you're going to have to look back on. It's just something you're going to have to live with."

Seattle isn't the only team that has been routed by Denver this week. The Nuggets finished this homestand with three blowout victories. They beat Memphis by 22 Wednesday night and the Raptors by 32 Friday night.

Sunday, they used the same formula to rout the Sonics. They shared the ball and hit open shots, and for the second straight game the starters were on the bench in the fourth quarter and let the reserves play mop-up time.

"It's hard to beat a team when you get 44 assists and making the extra pass," Martin said. "It's tough to beat a team when you play like we did tonight."

Now the trick for Denver is to keep it going. The Nuggets are 40-26 but trail Golden State by 1½ games for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They start a five-game road trip in Detroit on Tuesday and hope to continue their strong play against the defensive-minded Pistons while trying to comprehend Sunday's win.

"Like the Rockets winning 22 straight, it's unheard of on this level," Martin said. "Scoring 168 points in regulation is unheard of. Hopefully we can take what we did these last three games at home onto the road trip."

Seattle has to regroup after suffering its 51st loss of the season in an embarrassing fashion.

"We get beat that badly, there's no excuse for that," Sonics coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "It matters a lot because we're professionals and we're trying to compete -- and we didn't compete tonight."

    Game notes
The Nuggets' franchise record for points came in a 186-184 triple-overtime loss to Detroit on Dec. 13, 1983. ...
