Buddhist cuisine is an Asian cuisine that is followed by monks and many believers from areas historically influenced by Chinese Buddhism. It is vegetarian or vegan, and it is based on the Dharmic concept of ahimsa. Shojin ryori is the traditional dining style of Buddhist monks in Japan, and grew widespread in popularity with the spread of Zen Buddhism in the 13th century. As the cuisine is made without meat, fish or other animal products, it can be enjoyed by vegans and vegetarians. What is the purpose of your practice? •To build strength? •To build flexibility? •To release stress and tension? •To create more awareness of the body,breath and mind? The purpose of my practice is to incalculate more devas (light/auspiciousness) for my dharmic responsibility as a daughter,sister,friend,wife and yogi. Below are some ways I try to do this: 1.Set a time you can practice each day. Mine is usually in the morning right after I wake up. If I am going to be having a long day,I wake up even earlier to get on my mat. Bottom line: commitment is KEY! 2. Make use of your breath. Are you aware of the movement of air in and out of your nostrils daily? Many of us do not realise we forget to breathe! Breathing right can enhance the benefits of asanas and yoga truly is about breathing.Otherwise you are just doing gymnastics! There are various types of pranayama but if breathing in a particular way makes you feel uncomfortable,just breathe naturally. 3.Listen to your body. Your body is your gift.Make time for connection to it. Be curious of how you feel as you move; your arms,hips..How far can you move into a pose,how long can you hold a pose,which poses cause more tightness in certain parts of your body than others-make your adjustments accordingly.Do not stretch the body beyond its limit just to impress or compete with someone.You will only injure yourself.Been there numerous times before-it does not feel good at all! Safe practice is so,so important!And listen to your body afterwards.How does it respond to your practice and further make changes and practice accordingly. 4. Connect your practice with your deepest "why"-your goals. Our lives mean so much more if it is in line with our values.Practice asking yourself the deeper why,the deepest why? Why did I do this today? Eat this today? Think like this today? Your "why's" give you motivation to take action in your interaction with the world around you.So connect your goals for moving with your "why's" and you will definitely be wanting to show up for yourself and for your practice!
