    生薏米 vs 熟薏米

    CheckCheckCin:從中醫角度來看,生薏米性涼,有清熱、健脾、祛濕的功效,適合痰濕及濕熱體質人士服用。而熟薏米是經炒熟的生薏米,屬性平和,但作用變得較為溫和,通常取其健脾作用,祛濕功效大減。如體質偏寒,烹調生薏米時可加少許生薑同煮,或以屬性平和的茯苓、扁豆衣代替,這些食材性平但均有化濕作用。順帶一提名字類近的洋薏米,是去殼的大麥,與薏米沒有關係,它有健脾及回乳作用,含豐富纖維,有助腸道蠕動。

    生薏米 — 性涼,能清熱健脾祛濕,消腫排膿。適合痰濕及濕熱體質人士服用。孕婦、小便頻及便秘人士慎服。

    熟薏米 — 性平,是經炒熟的生薏米。作用較溫和,健脾為主。適合氣虛、血虛、陽虛、痰濕、濕熱體質人士服用。孕婦慎服。

    洋薏米 — 又稱珍珠麥。是去殼的大麥,有健脾及回乳作用,療效不大。適合各體質人士服用。

    Raw coix seed vs Cooked coix seed

    CheckCheckCin: From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, raw coix seed is cool in nature and can clear heat, strengthen the spleen, and eliminate dampness from the body. It is suitable for individuals with the phlegm-dampness and damp heat body constitutions.

    Cooked coix seed, on the other hand, refers to raw coix seed that has been cooked, and it is mild in nature. Cooked coix seed is mainly prepared to strengthen the spleen. In other words, it is not as effective in dispelling dampness.

    If you have a cold body constitution, you might want to add raw ginger into your raw coix seed. You can also add poria and hyacinth bean coat, as they are mild in nature. Though these ingredients are mild in nature, it can reduce dampness in the body.

    There is also another ingredient called pearl barley. Do note that they are different from the coix seed types discussed above. Pearl barley is barley that has had its outer bran layer removed along its hull. People consume it to strengthen the spleen and suppress lactation. As a food that is high in fiber, it can also promote bowel movements.

    Raw Coix Seeds – cool in nature, it can help to clear heat, nourish the spleen, and dispel dampness in body. Suitable for those with phlegm and dampness or damp heat body types. Not recommended for those who are pregnant, constipated or experiencing frequent urination.

    Cooked Coix Seeds - mild in nature, is raw coix seeds stir-fried and cooked. It is mild in nature, mainly suitable for nourishing the spleen. Suitable for those with qi deficiency, blood asthenia, yang deficiency, phlegm and dampness, and damp heat body types. Not recommended for those who are pregnant.

    Pearl Barley has been polished to remove the bran, suitable for nourishing the spleen and for breastmilk withdrawal. Doesn't have much healing effects, suitable for all body types.

    材料:牡丹皮9克、赤芍9克、丹參9克
    做法:材料洗淨放保溫瓶,以熱開水沖洗一遍,再注入熱開水焗30分鐘即可。此茶可反覆沖泡至味淡,建議一星期飲用2-3天,連續兩星期為一個療程。
    備註:孕婦不宜服用。

    Individuals with the qi-stagnation and blood stasis constitutions will experience blood stagnation beneath the skin, forming marks that are red or brown. Hence, it is important to invigorate the blood and clear the stasis.

    To do so, we can consume ingredients such as common peony root, salvia root, safflower, motherwort, rose flower, and Chinese hawthorn. Other ingredients that can invigorate the blood and clear blood stasis are lotus root, Chinese hawthorn, black fungus, and chives. These ingredients can improve the circulation of qi and blood, which can reduce appearance of acne scars.

    Avoid eating raw, cold, and spicy food as they can affect the circulation of the qi and blood. Last but not least, resist the urge of squeezing the acne if you experience another outbreak in the future!

    Tea remedy for pimple marks
    Effects: clears heat, activates and cools blood and reduces dark pimple marks
    Ingredients: 9g peony root, 9g red peony root, 9g salvia root
    Preparation: rinse all ingredients thoroughly and place into thermos, rinse with hot water once. Then add in hot water again and steep for 30 minutes. You can re-brew until its flavor weakens. For best results, drink consecutively for 2-3 days. Two weeks for a treatment.

    Soup to combat nasal allergies
    Nasal allergies are a common occurrence in cities. Many urban dwellers are born with weak lungs, prone to getting frequent colds, and have a weaker immune system. Some may sneeze and develop a nose itch and runny nose when they experience a change of temperature.

    According to the Chinese Medicine theories, nasal allergies are associated with the lungs, spleen, and kidneys. Apart from congenital defects, our unhealthy dietary habits and lifestyle can also cause these organs to deteriorate and in turn cause us to develop allergic rhinitis.

    It takes great patience to treat nasal allergies. Besides drinking soup that can strengthen the qi and moisten the lungs, we need to adjust our lifestyle and avoid eating raw and cold food. Also, do consume ingredients that could nourish the lungs and qi such as Chinese yam, lily bulb, snow fungus, poria, and white hyacinth bean. Remember to consume them according to our body constitutions.

    Tips on ingredient:
    Cordyceps flower is mild in nature. It nourishes the lungs and kidney and strengthens areas of weakness. It also moistens and protects skin and has anti-aging effects. Cordyceps flower is suitable for all body types.

    Cordyceps flower and Chinese yam soup with potato
    Effects: Replenishes qi and strengthens the spleen. Relieves fatigue and nasal allergies.
    Ingredients: 15g cordyceps flower, 1 carrot, 1 fresh Chinese yam, 2 potato, 2 candied dates, 1 pack dawn rice water powder or 1/2 rice scoop of white rice
    Preparation:
    1. Rinse all ingredients thoroughly. Cut the peeled carrot, fresh Chinese yam and potato into pieces.
    2. Combine all ingredients with 2500ml of water in a pot and cook on high heat until boiling. Turn to low heat and simmer for 1.5 hours. Add salt to taste.
