校長、教授、以及在螢幕前的各位同學，大家好。非常感謝臺大給我這個機會。我是韓哈斯，來自美國華盛頓特區。我會以自身的真實經驗出發，來跟大家分享臺大帶給我的收穫。

我當初為什麼選擇來台灣求學呢？我小時候非常喜歡看武打片，然後我十歲的時候去看了一部電影叫做「功夫熊貓」。這部電影成為了我最喜歡的電影，主角「阿波」的故事跟我的故事很像。我看完了之後就決定要開始學功夫，所以去了「美國武術學院」。那個時候我每天都聽旁邊的人講中文，到了高中我就決定開始學中文。當時我遇到了一位貴人，她是從台北到美國來教書的中文老師，她教的課是我當時最喜歡的課，我每天去她的教室跟好朋友練習。到了高中畢業時，我是全高中中文最好的非母語人士。同時，我第二喜歡的課程是電腦科學，那時候我是程式能力數一數二的學生。後來在成功錄取夢寐以求的學校：臺灣大學之後，我感到雀躍不已，因為我既可以繼續學習中文，也可以持續在世界頂尖的學府中，往電腦科學的方向精進自我。

不過老實說，當我回顧大一的時期，我也曾迷失自我。雖然我修了很多很多的中文課，但是我那時只聽得懂大概一半的課程內容。跟大家對美國人的印象不同，我其實很害羞，也很害怕舉手提問，我甚至不太敢參與社交，所以當時朋友也很少。我開始想家，也變得有一點憂鬱。那時籃球是我唯一的紓壓方式。

但更不幸的是，我在打籃球時弄傷了我的前十字韌帶，做了兩次手術，需要一年半才能恢復。許多的負面情緒壓得我喘不過氣。我被困在人生的低谷，不知如何是好。我覺得我的中文不夠好，我也被診斷出失眠跟ADHD，另外，美國高中的數學太簡單了，來這邊不夠用。種種壓力讓我足不出戶，找不到自己的人生方向。後來，我向臺大心輔中心以及我的心理醫師尋求協助，然後我也開始跟系上有更多互動。有一位教授叫徐宏民跟我說，"Never give up"，雖然那時候我覺得這句話太過於簡化了我的問題，不過，在我仔細思考了一個禮拜之後，我下定決心，發誓不讓自己被這些事擊敗。我決定要克盡全力，認真做好每件事。這是我人生的轉捩點，我開始變得異常自律。當時廖世偉教授和洪士灝系主任帶我進入它們的研究室鑽研學術。這重燃了我對資訊工程的熱忱，提醒了我當初會愛上這個領域的原因。我開始研究人工智慧以及區塊鏈，也開始跟其他系上同學交朋友，一起成立臺大人工智慧應用社NTUAI。NTUAI現在是校內頗具規模的技術研究社團，致力於推廣人工智慧給任何對該領域有熱忱的學生。歡迎加入NTUAI，可以掃描我們的QR CODE。

最近，由於疫情的緣故，我已經一年半沒回美國了。但是沒關係，因為我已經找到了我第二個家。我很愛臺大，以及台灣的人事物。雖然我經歷了人生的低潮，但這裡的一切總是給我滿滿的祝福與協助。最後，我想送給大家「功夫熊貓」裡的一句台詞： "You just need to believe"。只要用樂觀的態度去面對困難，就有能力改變自己，甚至改變身旁所愛的人。就像阿波的父親說的，"心誠則靈，只要你相信，點石就能成金。根本沒有什麼秘笈。只有你。"謝謝大家。

President, professors, and classmates, I'm very honored to be here. Thank you to NTU for giving me this opportunity. My name's Seth Austin Harding, and I'm from the D.C. metropolitan area. I'm going to tell a real story that's personal but that's relatable and what I see as the real me.

What motivated and guided me to take my undergraduate studies in Taiwan? When I was very young, I really loved watching kung fu movies, and when I was 10 years old, I went to the theater to watch "Kung Fu Panda". This became my favorite movie as I felt like the story of the main character Po was one to which I could very much relate. After watching this movie, I decided that I wanted to start learning kung fu, so I went to the United States Wushu Academy. At the time, I began hearing Mandarin on a daily basis, so when I was in high school, I decided to begin formally studying Chinese. It ended up being my Chinese teacher from Taipei who was my favorite teacher who taught my favorite class, so I decided I'd hang out in the Chinese classroom every day and practice lots. By the time graduation came around, I had attained the highest proficiency in Chinese among any non-native speaker in my school. My second favorite class was computer science, and I ended up attaining among the best coding skills in my school. After getting accepted to the school of my dreams -- National Taiwan University -- I felt honored, humbled, and excited; I could now spend time at among the world's finest universities studying Chinese and at the same time advancing my knowledge of computer science.

But when I look back at my freshman year, to be honest with you, I didn't know what I was doing. Despite having taken very many Chinese classes, when I went to the NTU lectures, I understood only about half of what the teachers were saying. Contrary to most people's impressions of an American, I was actually too shy to raise my hand, to ask questions, or to even meet with teachers after class, so I had very few friends at the time. I started to become homesick and depressed. At that time, I found that basketball was the only way I knew of relieving my stress. However, while playing basketball, I had torn my ACL and it would take two surgeries and a year and a half in time to fully recover. At this point, I felt caught between a rock and a hard place. In fact, this was the lowest point of my life, and I didn't know what to do. I felt like my Chinese wasn't good enough, I had been diagnosed with insomnia and ADHD, and I felt like the math taught in America was too simple to allow for me to keep up with my classmates. I was under immense pressure, and at this time, I lost any sense of purpose or direction. Later on, I went to seek help from NTU counseling, from my psychiatrist, and from my department. I reached out to Professor Winston Hsu from CSIE, and he told me this: "Never give up"; it was such an oversimplified way to approach such a complex series of problems, I had thought. However, I pondered these words intensely for one week, and by the end of that week, I had made a firm decision. This would NOT be another example of me giving up. I decided to go all out, to work diligently and passionately on all tasks at hand. This was the turning point of my life; I started to discipline myself to a very high degree. At this time, I met my then-to-become advisors Professor Shih-Wei Liao and Professor Shih-Hao Hung and entered their labs to begin research. Finally, the passion that I had for computer science that I had previously held in high school was kindled again, and I was finally reminded why I loved this field. I began my research life in blockchain and AI, and at the time I entered the lab, I also began creating NTUAI. NTUAI is now a large and highly successful NTU club that is dedicated to the research and public understanding of AI. Welcome one and all to join us; please scan our QR code here.

For a year and a half I haven't returned to America because of covid. But not to worry; I have found my second home, away from home. I love it here in NTU and I cherish all of the things I've had the privilege to experience in Taiwan. I've gone through the most difficult of struggles in my life here, but I've also had the most fortunate and blessed of experiences. To conclude, I'd like to quote a line from "Kung Fu Panda": "You just need to believe". As long as you are willing to adopt an optimistic attitude in facing challenges and hardships, you may become a positive force in changing the lives of those around you as well as your own life. It all depends on how you view it; just like what Po's father says, "there is no secret ingredient. It's just you." Thank you, everyone.

【不是王牌也不是冤家：「無瑕心靈裡的永世陽光」背後的各種因緣】

1.達文西密碼的 A. Pope 也有份：

How happy is the blameless vestal’s lot!
純潔無瑕的修女多麼愉悅！
The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
忘卻了紅塵，也被那塵世忘卻。
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
無瑕心靈裡的永世陽光！
Each prayer accepted, and each wish resigned;
祈福每每如願，俗念每每淡忘。

「王牌冤家 (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)」的英文片名來自著名的英詩〈Eloisa to Abelard〉，描寫法國神學家阿伯拉與他的學生哀綠綺思的愛情故事。台灣的中文片名，則來自企劃人員被天外隕石砸到的難解靈感。

這首詩的作者 Alexander Pope 正好是電影《Da Vinci Code 達文西密碼》中一道解碼的關鍵線索 A. Pope。不過電影和其根據的原著小說中的描述不盡然正確：Alexander Pope 並沒有出席牛頓的葬禮，而是寫了多年後才設立的紀念碑上頭的墓誌銘。


2. 差點不會變成電影：

電影的靈感來自於導演 Michel Gondry 的好朋友、著名的法國觀念藝術家 Pierre Bismuth。

Bismuth 有一次聽到一名女性友人抱怨她的男友，於是問她說：如果有機會的話，你願不願意將他從自己的記憶中抹除掉？她則點頭說願意。稍後 Pierre Bismuth 原本打算把這次對話變成一個觀念藝術行動，寄發卡片給A，告訴他說你的好朋友B把關於你的記憶抹掉了。但 Michel Gondry 說服 Pierre Bismuth 說這個點子更適合寫成電影劇本，並且讓 Bismuth 在電影中掛名為"story by"。

導演 Michel Gondry 以及真正動筆把點子寫成劇本的 Charlie Kaufman 工作到一半，突然看到 Christopher Nolan 的新片《Memento 記憶拼圖》。兩人隨即心灰意冷，準備放棄這個案子。理由是這兩個故事基本上都是失去記憶的人在交錯的時間線中拼湊真相的過程，本質上太過接近。

最後是製片親自督軍，說服他們倆至少把劇本弄完。


3. 連諧仿本片都會得獎：

這個點子之好，好到連諧仿這個故事線的作品都能得獎。2007年12月6日《The Simpsons 辛普森家庭》第19季播出一集名為《Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind》的節目，描繪 Homer 一覺醒來發現自己睡在雪地裡，完全不記得過去24小時發生什麼事情，然後花一整集的時間去追溯他為何被抹掉24小時記憶，以及他的家人到底為什麼一夜人間蒸發。這個綜合了《王牌冤家》和《記憶拼圖》的故事線，不僅被評為整個19季最好的一集，更讓《辛普森家庭》為此再度拿下一座艾美獎最佳動畫節目獎。


4.我們差一點看到 Nicolas Cage 和 Björk 的組合：

Nicolas Cage 原本是導演 Michel Gondry 心目中的男主角第一人選。但 Cage 的檔期正被他日後的代表作《Leaving Las Vegas 遠離賭城》給緊緊佔據，不得不放棄該案。

Jim Carrey 最後出線的理由是他是一個不想成為好萊塢巨星的人，那個對於自己的存在感到非常不安的特質正好是導演需要的東西。為了用攝影機捕捉到 Jim Carrey 本人焦慮不安的真實性格，而非那些經過表演直覺帶領的角色演出，導演 Michel Gondry 經常偷偷讓攝影機開機，拍下完全沒有警戒心狀態下的 Jim Carrey。

冰島歌手 Björk 則是導演 Michel Gondry 原本心目中的女主角第一人選。兩人已經在音樂錄影帶《Human Behaviour》中合作過，已經有一定默契。不過 Björk 讀過劇本之後決定婉拒，因為她擔心沒有太多表演經驗的自己會因為這個情節而使個人情緒受到影響。畢竟幾年前 Lars Von Trier 的《Dancing in the Dark 在黑暗中漫舞》已經對 Björk 造成了非常大的陰影。

Kate Winslet 最後出線的理由是她比任何來試鏡的大明星都更敢於提出自己的意見，甚至是對這個劇本的批評。她說整個故事線太過重複，並認為應該更放大膽去描繪角色的陰暗面。導演 Michel Gondry 對於她的意見非常驚豔，甚至去威脅片廠說如果最後不是 Kate Winslet 演女主角的話，他也要退出劇組。


5. 如夢似幻的場景不在劇本裡：

因為導演 Michel Gondry 刻意引導兩位主角放開心胸聊自己的感情經驗，電影的成品含有大量來自即興演出的對白。而整部電影中最美的一幕更是完全不在劇本裡的因緣巧合。

電影中由 Kirsten Dunst 飾演的忘情診所員工說出「Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 無瑕心靈裡的永世陽光」這段破題的美麗詩句，接著畫面便轉向夜半時分紐約街頭的這場馬戲團遊行，男女主角 Jim Carrey 和 Kate Winslet 擠在人群中觀看大象遊行隊伍。

然後，Kate Winslet 突然消失在人群中。

這夢幻的一幕不只是不再 Charlie Kaufman 原來的劇本中，更是連拍攝日程表中都沒有的行程。

劇組正在紐約曼哈頓拍攝的某一天下午，有人發現著名的玲玲馬戲團 (Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus) 正好當天深夜要遊行到麥迪遜花園廣場。導演 Michel Gondry 聽到消息，第一個反應就是叫大家趕快打包器材準備出發。幾個小時後，Jim Carrey 和Kate Winslet 就已經在大象之間即興演出了。

有趣的是最後一個畫面，導演 Michel Gondry 特別私下指示 Kate Winslet 偷偷離開現場，攝影機拍下了 Jim Carrey 驚慌地在人群中找 Kate Winslet 的真實反應，事實上他還大喊了一聲 "Kate!"。

雖然突如其來闖入遊行群眾拍攝出現了許多意外 (比如現場民眾一直大喊 Jim Carrey 的名字)，但這一幕彌足珍貴，導演 Michel Gondry 一直認為這是整部電影裡他最喜歡的段落。


6. 馬戲團遊行已經成為記憶：

有百年歷史的玲玲馬戲團（Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus）幾年前宣布永久停業。電影中這場夢幻泡影一般的超現實遊行，如今真的成為夢幻泡影了。

這場超級不真實的夢幻馬戲團遊行每年都會在紐約舉行，是已經持續了三十幾年的夜間嘉年華傳統。

成立於1871年的玲玲馬戲團與紐約大蘋果馬戲團、太陽馬戲團合稱世界三大馬戲團。 鼎鼎大名的暹羅雙胞胎曾是馬戲團的臺柱。玲玲馬戲團每年到紐約做例行演出的時候，都會大張旗鼓地以遊行的方式搬進演出的劇場。遊行隊伍中最惹人注目的永遠是盛裝打扮的大象們，所以這場年度遊行還被紐約人稱作「Elephant Walk 大象遊行」。

昔日動物表演的風尚如今已成為罪惡，玲玲馬戲團因為違反日益嚴格的動物保護法令而先後多次被罰款。 也一度順應時勢宣布停止動物表演，但來得太晚的做法已經無法阻止票房急遽下滑，終究走向永久停業。

值得一提的插曲是當年順應動保趨勢的變革，當時還引來日後的美國總統 Donald Trump 酸言酸語嘲弄，說馬戲團想降低成本就不要拿什麼動保之類的說法來唬弄，並揚言沒有動物就拒看馬戲團。

時代的巨輪終究不可能隻身抵擋，隨著馬戲團的停業，每個紐約人的夢幻遊行記憶也將一點一點消逝、淡忘在空氣中，就好像從來沒有來過一樣。

直到有一天他們在好幾年沒穿的外套中發現了忘情診所的過期約診單......

錢是台灣人民納稅，怎麼用卻不被揭露。美國智庫是拿錢辦事，還是以金援為名收受獻金為實？

華府智庫昆西治安研究所（Quincy Institute）民主外交政策計畫執行人克里夫頓（Eli Clifton）於17日發表《台灣金援智庫：無所不在但很少揭露》（Taiwan funding of think tanks: Omnipresent and rarely disclosed）一文指出，台灣金援了美國五大智庫，促使這些智庫向美國執政者建言，做出有利於台灣綠營執政政府的美國政策。該文發出後，台北經濟文化代表處政治組組長趙怡翔緊急在推特上指出，該文有錯失之處，且並未向台北經濟文化代表處查證置評。

文章稱，台灣金援的五個華府智庫包括布魯金斯學會、美國進步中心（CAP）、新美國安全中心（CNAS）、戰略與國際研究中心（CSIS）以及哈德遜研究所，都有來自於台北經濟文化代表處的資金，但都將其深埋在其年度報告中。這五個華盛頓最著名、看似公正的的智庫一直在發表政策文件，敦促美國與台灣建立更緊密的關係，擴大美國與台灣的武器銷售和貿易協定，卻沒有廣泛披露其背後來自台北經濟文化代表處（TECRO）的高額資金。

支持台有助民主自由

文章詳列台北經濟文化代表處對五大智庫的贊助金額，及這些智庫收到贊助後為台灣做了什麼。文章稱，布魯金斯學會學者於2019年12月為《台北時報》撰文，指出美國兩黨支持在台灣和美國的重要性；美國進步中心研究員在今年3月分《華盛頓月刊》上發表專欄文章稱，加強美台關係將有助民主自由，並在2019年9月發表《如何支持亞洲的民主與人權》報告時，直接向美國決策者「為如何穩固支持台灣」提供直接建議。

而新美國安全中心向華盛頓提供有關2020年《中國崛起的挑戰》報告時，敦促美國決策者優先考慮與台灣的雙邊投資和貿易協定；CSIS在5月發表前美國駐港澳總領事唐偉康（Kurt Tong）的文章，其中主張美台達成貿易協定，將能加強美國在亞洲領導地位。

倡售台集束炸彈抗中

哈德遜研究所則於5月向美國決策者提出售台「集束炸彈」，以便台灣可以威脅對中共具有重大政治價值的非軍事目標及領導人，並建議鼓勵台灣有效威脅中國的非軍事目標。還鼓勵美國決策者「做出直接有利於台灣綠營執政黨的政策」，敦促美國決策者承認「一個自治或獨立的台灣」。

Why not disclose?

Hudson may be the most extreme in its policy proposals, but the consistent behavior from the five think tanks is unmistakable: General support funding from Taiwan’s government is never disclosed when experts, whose salaries may well be partially funded by TECRO dollars, offer policy recommendations regarding U.S.-Taiwan relations.

“My philosophy is that if you’re producing any report, you should put right up front in an acknowledgment section that lists the specific funders, including general-support funders, that helped make this report possible and list any potential conflict of interest with the funders,” said Freeman of the Foreign Influence Transparency Initiative. “Let the reader judge for themself whether there’s a conflict of interest.”

Though the appearance or possibility of a conflict of interest does not mean that the funding flows from Taiwan influenced the work products produced by the think tanks, the decision not to prominently disclose the funding may undermine otherwise valuable analysis and policy proposals.

“It seems like because they hid it, they have something to hide,” said Freeman. “When the public trust in government is at all-time lows and people think D.C. is so corrupt, it’s even more important for think tanks and think tank scholars to put this information out there and try and restore the trust of the American public.”

Indeed, as acceptance of a cold war posture toward China becomes ever more accepted as a foregone conclusion by Washington influencers, one of them actually highlighted the danger of foreign funding going largely undisclosed.

CNAS’s 2020 report that advocated for a U.S.-Taiwan trade agreement warned of think tanks receiving “substantial funding from Beijing that is often targeted at shaping views and discourse on China.” CNAS recommended “higher degrees of transparency” to help “ensure that this funding is not generating hidden forms of foreign lobbying, self-censorship, or other activities that undermine core U.S. democratic principles.”

That self-awareness about the potential influence of foreign funding, and the ethical arguments for greater transparency, does not appear to extend to the omnipresent funding stream from Taipei to think tanks across the Beltway.

Hi everyone!
I’m excited to finally share this new project with everyone!End of December I received a call from the renowned Pauian development company to decorate their new show house.Being myself passioned about interior design and home decoration I immediately accepted this new challenge. It was such a rewarding experience to work with professionals and I shot two episodes to share with everyone the whole process.Here is the first one introducing this project, my vision for this space and my definition of a home.
