被玷污的原則：翻譯首先求信

除了指出中譯把法文 bafouer （蔑視）、英譯 besmirch （玷污）誤譯成「展現」，把意思完全弄成相反外，還有一個明顯的誤譯：

\\ Mais l’unanimité demandée autour de la «liberté d’expression» a entretenu une confusion.

But the unanimity we were meant to show in defending ‘freedom of expression’ fed a kind of confusion.

但大家一同表現出捍衛「言論自由」的樣子會有點讓人困惑。//

這裡，feed a confusion 不是「讓人困惑」，而是「一直不斷強化一個大家沒搞清楚的事」。固然，沒搞清楚一件事就是困惑，但「讓這困惑不斷持續、強化」的意思完全丟掉了。

這個英文博士生的程度也太不可靠了吧，還是暫且別做翻譯的好，市面上劣譯已經太多人在做了，還是找到自己的利基（夠正確的翻譯）比較妥當。

\\ 〔為什麼你應該試著自己讀原文〕

在這個訪問裡，Jacques Rancière對訪問者第一個問題的答覆的最前面的部分，中文翻出來是這樣：

「我並不是很確定有什麼矛盾。顯然大家同意譴責一月的恐攻事件，並且大家也欣然面對後續的大眾回應。但大家一同表現出捍衛「言論自由」的樣子會有點讓人困惑。事實上，言論自由規定了個人與國家之間的關係，同時也禁止國家不能阻礙不同的意見。但《查理週刊》一月七日的攻擊卻展現了截然不同的法則：也就是說，你不能因為你不喜歡他們所要說的，就可以濫殺無辜。就是這個法則讓人們能一塊生活，並且尊重彼此。」

然後我查了一下原文出處，Verso上的英譯是這樣：

"I wouldn’t be so sure that there’s any contradiction. Obviously everyone agrees in condemning the January attacks, and everyone was pleased by the popular response that followed. But the unanimity we were meant to show in defending ‘freedom of expression’ fed a kind of confusion. In fact, freedom of expression is a principle regulating the relations between individuals and the state, forbidding the state from preventing dissenting views being expressed. But the 7 January attack on Charlie Hebdo besmirched a quite different principle: namely, that you shouldn’t shoot someone because you don’t like what they have to say. And this is the principle that sets the terms of how individuals can live together and learn to respect each other."

最後，《新觀察家》上的法文原文是這樣：

«Il n’est pas sûr qu’il y ait contradiction. Tout le monde, bien sûr, est d’accord pour condamner les attentats de janvier et se féliciter de la réaction populaire qui a suivi. Mais l’unanimité demandée autour de la «liberté d’expression» a entretenu une confusion. En effet, la liberté d’expression est un principe qui régit les rapports entre les individus et l’Etat en interdisant à ce dernier d’empêcher l’expression des opinions qui lui sont contraires.

Or, ce qui a été bafoué le 7 janvier à «Charlie», c’est un tout autre principe: le principe qu’on ne tire pas sur quelqu’un parce qu’on n’aime pas ce qu’il dit, le principe qui règle la manière dont individus et groupes vivent ensemble et apprennent à se respecter mutuellement.»

其實英文也是有一些怪怪的地方不過我們先不管它了，因為意思大致上沒有差很多。差很多的地方是，中文說，「但《查理週刊》一月七日的攻擊卻展現了截然不同的法則」，可是，這句話要譯的是英文那句"But the 7 January attack on Charlie Hebdo besmirched a quite different principle"，換言之，英文裡的besmirch被翻成了「展現」。先不管英譯者幹嘛要用這個我覺得很冷僻的字besmirch來譯法文原文裡的bafouer，重點是，這個英文字雅虎奇摩字典上就可以查到的意思是「弄髒」，而這整句的法文原文«Or, ce qui a été bafoué le 7 janvier à «Charlie», c’est un tout autre principe»的意思很清楚，就是「一月7日的《查理週刊》事件，蔑視或踐踏的完全是另外一個原則」。這樣看起來，英文說《查理週刊》事件「弄髒」了另外一個原則，似乎也無不可。唯一有問題的是，中譯說的卻是《查理週刊》事件「展現了」截然不同的法則，這是不對的。
因為很不幸地，邏輯上，「展現」一個法則或原則跟「蔑視」或「弄髒」一個法則或原則甚至剛好是相反的意思。今天如果有一個原則叫做跟女生講話的時候不可以太兇，那麼，如果我很溫柔地跟女生講話，就是在展現這個原則；可是，如果我反而偏要凶巴巴地跟女生講話，那我就是在蔑視或弄髒這個原則。所以，根據以上所說，為什麼你應該試著讀原文呢？因為中文的翻譯，常常會看起來好像只差一點點，可是仔細追究起來意義根本就跟原文要表達的是相反的；這樣的東西最好不要讀太多，讀太多這種邏輯不通的東西的話，腦子會壞掉的。
