Let me share some interesting facts on Brooklyn Bridge-

1. It’s the first steel-wire suspension bridge in the world.

2. Even though it is the brainchild of engineer John Augustus Roebling, however, he could not live to see it completed. While making measurements for the future bridge in 1869, a ferry crushed Roebling’s foot. He developed tetanus because of the accident and eventually passed away. Then his son, Washington Augustus Roebling stepped in as the bridge project’s chief engineer. However, he came down with the decompression sickness and was confined to bed. Finally, this project was completed under the supervision of his wife Emily Warren Roebling. Seems like this family had to pay some price to make sure this bridge happen!

3. Beside Emily Warren, a rooster is the first being who made trip across this bridge. Lucky fella!

4. To show the sturdiness of the bridge, the city called upon showman P.T. Barnum to march 21 elephants across the Brooklyn Bridge. It must have been quite a show!

5. The bridge has gone by several names before it became Brooklyn Bridge. Such as, “Great East River Bridge, or “New York City & Brooklyn Bridge”, etc..

Sejarah imunisasi negara kita bermula seawal tahun 1950-an apabila Program Imunisasi Kebangsaan Malaysia (NIP) diperkenalkan dengan tujuan untuk mengurangkan penyakit tuberculosis (batuk kering), Hepatitis B, difteria, pertussis (batuk kokol), mumps (beguk), human papilloma virus (HPV), demam campak (measles), rubella, tetanus dan polio. Hasilnya kadar jangkitan penyakit Difteria dan Tetanus turun dengan drastik. Begitu juga dengan penyakit Cacar (small pox).

Setelah program vaksinasi cacar dilakukan secara menyeluruh, negara telah berjaya diisytiharkan sebagai bebas dari cacar pada tahun 1980. Seawal tahun 1989, Muzakarah Jawatankuasa Fatwa Majlis Kebangsaan bagi Hal Ehwal Agama Islam Malaysia kali ke 24 telah memutuskan bahawa Program Imunisasi Campak, Tibi, Batuk Kokol, Difteria, Tetanus dan Polio adalah harus dari segi syarak kerana berdasarkan kaedah “menolak kerosakan adalah didahulukan daripada mencari kemaslahatan’’ dalam hukum Islam.

Jangan cepat percaya berita yang tidak benar berkenaan vaksin dan imunisasi. Percaya dan yakinlah kepada pakar perubatan bertauliah dan pemerintah yang menjaga rakyatnya. Ingatlah firman Allah di dalam Surah al-Ma’idah ayat 32 yang bermaksud “…bahawasanya sesiapa yang membunuh seorang manusia dengan tiada alasan yang membolehkan membunuh orang itu, atau (kerana) melakukan kerosakan di muka bumi, maka seolah-olah dia telah membunuh manusia semuanya; dan sesiapa yang menjaga keselamatan hidup seorang manusia, maka seolah-olah dia telah menjaga keselamatan hidup manusia semuanya…”

I cut myself on a rusty knife in China and had to get a Tetanus shot! So how does it work and is it really only $2?

Tetanus, also known as lockjaw, is an infection characterized by muscle spasms. In the most common type, the spasms begin in the jaw and then progress to the rest of the body. These spasms usually last a few minutes each time and occur frequently for three to four weeks. Spasms may be so severe that bone fractures may occur. Other symptoms may include fever, sweating, headache, trouble swallowing, high blood pressure, and a fast heart rate. Onset of symptoms is typically three to twenty-one days following infection. It may take months to recover. About 10% of those infected die.

Tetanus is caused by an infection with the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which is commonly found in soil, saliva, dust, and manure. The bacteria generally enter through a break in the skin such as a cut or puncture wound by a contaminated object. They produce toxins that interfere with muscle contractions, resulting in the typical symptoms. Diagnosis is based on the presenting signs and symptoms. The disease does not spread between people.

Infection can be prevented by proper immunization with the tetanus vaccine. In those who have a significant wound and less than three doses of the vaccine, both immunization and tetanus immune globulin are recommended. The wound should be cleaned and any dead tissue should be removed. In those who are infected tetanus immune globulin or, if it is not available, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is used. Muscle relaxants may be used to control spasms. Mechanical ventilation may be required if a person's breathing is affected.

Tetanus occurs in all parts of the world but is most frequent in hot and wet climates where the soil contains a lot of organic matter. In 2015 there were about 209,000 infections and about 59,000 deaths globally. This is down from 356,000 deaths in 1990. Description of the disease by Hippocrates exists from at least as far back as the 5th century BC. The cause of the disease was determined in 1884 by Antonio Carle and Giorgio Rattone at the University of Turin, with a vaccine being developed in 1924.
