2021-07-14 18:31:00久しぶりのゆで太郎、土用の丑「うなぎ」を初食！『ゆで太郎』に伺い、数量限定のうなぎを頂きました。「ゆで太郎」について少し解説すると、同じく蕎麦屋チェーン店として有名な「富士そば」や「箱根そば」よりも店舗数が多いそうで、郊外のロードサイド店が多いのも特徴です。かき揚げや天ぷら類は注文が入ってから揚げるスタイルで、熱い揚げたてサクサクが食べられるのが嬉しいですね。今回は夏のメニュー、ゆで太郎のうなぎを初めて頂きました。それでは早速ご覧ください！

誰でも嫌いな物ってあると思いますが、「嫌い」や「あまり好きじゃない」または「嫌いじゃないけど好きでもない」などのように、どの程度「嫌い」なのかで日本語の表現の仕方は異なりますよね？実は英語も同様のことが言えます。英語でも自分が抱く嫌悪感の程度を適切に表現できるようになりましょう！

Hate

Hate は「憎しみ」や「憎悪」などの意味合いも含まれた「嫌い」を表現することから、I don’t like や dislike に比べ、より感情的な嫌悪を示すことになります。なのでアメリカでは Hate を会話で軽々しく使わないことが一般常識とされているため、「I hate him.」のように人に対して使うと「You don’t hate him. Don’t say that.」のように言葉選びに注意をされることもあります。
しかし、そのように Hate が重い言葉である一方で、「I hate cilantro.（パクチー大嫌い）」や「I hate waiting in line.（列に並んで待つのは大嫌い）」 のように食べ物や行動が単に「大嫌い」だと表現するなど日常的に使われているのも現実で、その使い分けは簡単ではありません。そこで hate の代わりに使える表現が

になります。I can’t stand は不快に感じる出来事や行為に我慢できない（＝嫌い）を意味する言い回しで Hate ほど重い表現ではありません。そのため嫌いな（我慢できない）食べ物、場所、人の態度・振る舞いなど、より日常的に用いられる言い回しであると言えます。
「I hate cilantro.」の代わりに「I can’t stand cilantro.」、「I hate waiting in line.」の代わりに「I can’t stand waiting in line.」と言うことができます。
＜例文＞
I can’t stand LA traffic. It drives me crazy.
（ロスの渋滞大っ嫌い。イライラする。）
I can’t stand smokey restaurants. It ruins my appetite.
（煙いレストランは嫌いです。食欲がなくなります。）

I don’t like は言葉の通り「好きじゃない」を意味し、人や食べ物、場所の雰囲気、スポーツや音楽など、基本的に何に対しても使える表現です。何かが嫌い（＝好きじゃない）と表現する時に最も一般的によく使われるフレーズではないでしょうか。
「あまり好きじゃない」と言いたい場合は「I don’t really like」のように don’t と like の間に really を入れます。例えば「きのこはあまり好きじゃない」は「I don’t really like mushrooms.」と言います。ただし、このように really を使った表現をする場合 really の挿入箇所を気をつけなければなりません。
「I really don’t like mushrooms.」のように really を I と don’tの間に入れると「きのこは本当に好きじゃない（＝すごく嫌い）」といった意味になります。「あまり好きじゃない」は「I don't really like」、「すごく嫌い」は「I really don’t like」、この語順を忘れないようにしましょう。
＜例文＞
I don’t really like living in the city. Everything is too expensive.
（都会に住むのはあまり好きではなりません。全てが高すぎます。）
I really don’t like living in the city. I want to move out to the suburbs.
（都会の暮らしが本当に嫌です。郊外に引っ越したいです。）

I’m not big on ~/ I’m not a fan of ~

次は「あまり好きじゃない」を表す口語的な表現を2つご紹介します。1つ目が「I’m not big on ~」です。Big on は音楽や映画、食べ物などが大好きであることを表現する時にも（肯定文でも）よく使われるフレーズで、それを否定することで「大好きでない＝あまり好きでない」を表すことになります。
そしてもう1つが「I’m not a fan of」というフレーズを使って表現します。直訳すると「〜のファンではない」、要するにそこまで熱狂的に好きではない（＝あまり好きじゃない）を表しています。「ファン」という言葉を使ってはいますが、スポーツ選手や芸能人の話だけに限らず、食べ物やテレビ番組など日常的な物事に対しても使われます。
以上のことから、レバーがあまり好きじゃない人は「I don’t like liver」の代わりに「I’m not big on liver.」または「I’m not a fan of liver.」と言うことができます。
＜例文＞
I’m not big on sushi. How about tempura? Is there a good tempura place around here?
（お寿司はあまり好きじゃないんだ。天ぷらはどう？この辺に美味しい天ぷら屋はないかな？）
I’ll drink beer every now and then but I’m not a fan of it.
（ビールは時々飲みますが、あまり好きではありません。）

最後は、好きでも嫌いでもない、単に興味がない、関心がない・・・などの意味合いとして使える表現をいくつかご紹介します。まず一つ目が「I’m not into ~」。 アメリカ人の日常会話では「〜が趣味です」や「〜に興味がある」と言うとき「I’m interested in ~」の代わりに「I'm into ~」がよく使われ、否定文の場合も同様です。例えば、コンピューターゲームは嫌いってわけではないが、特に興味がないと言いたい場合は「I’m not into computer games.」と言うといいでしょう。
また、何かにすごく夢中になっている（＝大好きである）ことを意味するフレーズ「crazy about」を「I’m not crazy about」のように否定文として使うことで、「大嫌い」ではなく単に関心がなかったり興味がないことを示します。特に、世間で話題になっていることや沢山の人が夢中になっていたとしても自分はあまり関心がない、と表現するような状況でよく使われます。例えば、アメリカでは『Game of Thrones』というテレビ番組がものすごく流行った時期がありましたが、私は何回見ても興味を持つことができず「I’m not crazy about Game of Thrones.」と友達によく言っていました。
もう一つ「not my thing」という表現があります。嫌いでないが個人的には楽しいとは思わない、といったニュアンスが含まれており、自分の苦手なことや好きでないことを表すときによく使われるフレーズです。例えばダンスが苦手な人は「Dancing is not my thing.」、カラオケがあまり好きじゃない人は「Karaoke is not my thing.」のように表現します。
＜例文＞
I have an Instagram account but I’m not really into social media.
（インスタのアカウントは持っていますが、SNSにはあまり興味がありません。）
I’ve seen a few Star Wars movies but to be honest, I’m not crazy about it.
（スターウォーズの映画は何本か見たけど、正直言うとあまり興味がないんだ。）
I know yoga is good for you but it’s not my thing.
