I am Filipino. My father’s paternal lineage is Chinese, and my mother’s maternal ancestry is Spanish. Growing up, my grandfather used to make fun of my nose, saying that it was flat and ugly. This kind of thinking pervaded my concept of beauty. I wonder how many other Filipino women thought that they were less beautiful because of the shape of their noses or the colour of their skin. Thankfully, we now live in a society where our diversity is celebrated— and as a consequence, there’s a resurgence of pride in our own heritage, our stories, and now even the physical traits characteristic of our various races. Our generation is rectifying outdated misconceptions on beauty, and acknowledging that not one race is more beautiful than the other. And as the world becomes more interconnected, the lines that divide become thinner and weaker.
