The headline that started it all... 3 years ago today I was reading my morning paper and came across this headline by authorities for women to “not dress sexy” and they will be safe from sexual assault. Although the intention was to protect women, by focusing only on what we wear with no mention of other safety measures or warning to would-be perpetrators, it revealed the extent of rape culture and tolerance for violence against women in this country. By blaming harassment and assault on what a woman was wearing, where she was or if she was drinking, we shift the blame and responsibility from the real culprit of these acts of violence and harassment. It shifts attention away from the real causes of GBV and perpetuates harmful gender stereotypes and myths. The @donttellmehowtodress movement was born out of a moment of anger and frustration. I did not expect my rant (second pic) would go viral and make international headlines which prompted me to then team up with @unwomenasia and other partners to create the Social Power Exhibition Against Sexual Assault where we displayed ordinary clothing worn by survivors at the time of their assault. This year marks the 3rd anniversary of #donttellmehowtodress and we are launching the online version next month as well as a new hashtag challenge with @tiktokthailandofficial. Please stay tuned! This photograph was taken a few days before he was hospitalised. After that, he never walked again. 
My memories of grandpa have always been those summer evenings spent napping in my grandparents’ bed, as the dull hum of the fan perpetuates the static and slightly irritating heat. I was in primary school and stayed with them every summer when my parents were out of town. As he farted in his sleep, grandma and I would giggle together. That was our private joke for years. Grandpa was such a prankster. He would hide things around the house and watch with glee as my grandma rummaged around. I wondered as a kid why he enjoyed making grandma so angry. Did he love grandma? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “It’s been really tough for him - having to go on dialysis every other day. He’s been refusing to talk to anyone.” My mum told me when I showed her the photo album I made from our shoot. His face lit up when we showed it to him. As he flipped through the pages, he had a warm smile on his face the whole time. No one had seen him smile in weeks. 
In that moment, I felt all his external circumstances fell apart. His soul was dwelling in love, which was all that remained after all was said and done.
