Mangroves with aerial roots will reduce the impact of tidal waves in shallow water more rapidly than those without. The roots, trunks and canopy of mangroves also act as a buffer against storm surges and in turn help lessen property damage and therefore protecting the livelihoods of local communities living by the shore. Mangrove forests also provide society with a range of other 'ecological services'. These include preventing coastal erosion, protecting coral reefs from silting up, and providing a source of timber, food and traditional medicines.
