Thank you to all who copped my “Resilience” shirt, within a week were able to raise $700 for Asian Americans Advancing Justice. Big up to @fortheloveoflosangeles for initiating and producing the project! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I designed this shirt about a year ago when the panini first started. The idea was to help support LA business suffering from the pandemic; I chose Chewing Foil. Since then, CF has closed its physical space, so I decided to donate proceeds to AAAJ. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My hand drawn illustration depicts a 1997 Acura Integra Type-R (known in JDM as Honda Type R). Back in the Azn Pryde days, a Type R represented the dreams and aspirations of many Asian Americans, regardless if you were a car enthusiast or not. The car was so rare (under 4K units were made from '97 - '01) that owning one became a symbol of "making it", or transcending the barriers set up against us. People started converting regular Integras to mimic the Type R, by changing the headlights / front end, reclothing the interior, even converting to Right Hand Drive. Carheads started bootlegging the red Honda Type R emblem to put on their cars, only stopping when the gangsters started stealing them to put on their belt buckles (guilty). Those who were there during the iconic era may recall this wave, way back before Fast n Furious jacked our subculture, misinterpreted it and excluded us from the narrative. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I drew the Type R overgrown with foliage, but still relatively undamaged and standing strong in the face of adversity; as we did back then, and continue to do so now. This piece is dedicated to our resilience. We weren't "quiet" back then - we were always loud in our Azn Pryde, refusing to minimize our space or voice; we were just humans, gangsters, ravers, gamers, comic geeks, breakers, hip hop heads striving to freely be ourselves. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The shirt is 100% organic cotton, dyed and preshrunk w a three color, hand pulled silkscreen. Super limited edition!
