One of my go-to movies, Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress (2002). #巴爾扎克與小裁縫 Sets in the Chinese Cultural Revolution era, where children from ‘bourgeois’ families were sent to re-education in rural areas, the story follows two young boys who joined the re-education program in a remote village in Sichuan (all dialogue in the movie is completely spoken in Sichuan dialect), and a local girl who is always curious & eager to learn about the outside world. These two young boys were determined to read her books, mostly Western classic novels they stole from a fellow re-education participant. It’s a great thing to see how a book could change a person. Balzac made her even more hungry to see the world.... I thought I’d wish the two to become a couple, but it’s more liberating to see the little seamstress hold on to her own choice. Came for Chen Kun, stayed for the stories ❤️

[Singapore] Most Hainanese who settled in Singapore, housed themselves around Middle Road, Purvis Street and Seah Street which are located in the Bugis area, forming a little Hainanese enclave in the city, and this in the picture is Purvis Street which I had taken late in the night. Unlike the Hokkiens, Teochews and Cantonese who flooded the island when these shores open up to the immigrants as early as in the 18th century, the Hainanese were relatively late comers and only arrived in the 1910s. They could not find any jobs as most industries were dominated by other dialect groups, most of them took up jobs as waiters, chefs for the British colonials. The Hainanese used to refer to Middle Road as "Hainan First Street", Purvis Street as "Hainan Second Street", and Seah Street as "Hainan Third Street", but it is more famous as a foodie heaven today.
