    最近有蠻多同學寫信來詢問這個問題。

    好，回到主題。

    首先，我們知道解除疫情封鎖的英文是「lift COVID-19 restrictions」。

    📌 lift (v.) 解除 （封鎖⋯⋯）

    「lift」這個字有許多意思，這裡作為動詞使用，意思是：

    to end a rule or law 取消、撤銷規定或法律

    • The restrictions on water usage have been lifted now that the river levels are normal.

    河水的水位已經恢復正常，因此用水限制被取消了。

    • At last they've lifted the ban on jeans at the club.

    While Tiger Woods, who was already playing golf at two years of age, seems to make a case for specializing and focusing on something early in life, Roger Federer’s winding path to tennis success points to the fact that sampling, rather than specialization, can often be the best route to eventual success.

    In this episode of Between Here and There, we discuss the pros and cons of being a generalist (sampling a bit of everything) vs being a specialist (going deep into a niche field). There are good arguments on both sides and when pressed for answers, you’d be surprised to hear which side people are actually on!

    #人肉錄音機≠ human recorder 😬
    人肉錄音機 - 毛孟靜
    //香港人有一個常用標籤，來批評官員說話重重複複 repeating and repeating：人肉錄音機。
    英文可否就叫做 human recorder？ 恐怕不大對，因為聽起來不知道這個 recorder 是有關收音還是播放。英文比較對等的講法，是形容此人像一部破爛的錄音機，a broken gramophone。

    *The official just keeps repeating himself. He simply speaks like a broken gramophone. 官員不斷重複講話，就像一部破爛的錄音機。

    當然，gramophone 技術上並非一般所指的錄音機，而是舊式唱盤，又叫留聲機。會用這樣一個過時的字，該也就是要加重因為過時而令人不耐煩的意思。

    若想把這句話「現代化」，可以改說 a scratched CD 刮花了的光碟。
    *He was like a scratched CD, saying the same thing over and over again. 他像一張刮花了的光碟，不斷重複同一番話。
    以上純粹針對說話內容，若要形容聲音速度，譬如說，有人開口似開機關槍，快得不得了，可以直接用上 machine gun，及 rapid-fire 火速。例：

    *He spoke in his usual machine-gun manner. 他以他如常的機關槍式口脗說話。
    Machine-gun 亦可以用作動詞：
    *She was uptight and machine-gunned the story. 她緊張地把故事像機關槍掃射般說一遍。

    也即是說，請人說話慢下來，不用急，可直接要求：
    *Relax. Take your time. No need to machine-gun it. 放鬆，慢慢來，不用像掃機關槍般。
    一樣是形容快速，rapid-fire 的緊張程度，比機關槍低一點。
    *I was amused by their rapid-fire chattering. 聽他們急促地談天閒聊，我覺得饒有興味。
    Rapid-fire 亦指火速而不斷的物事，包括「急口令」。
    *The stand-up comedian did a brilliant rapid-fire delivery. 那名棟篤笑匠作了一場精彩的急口令式表演。
    *It's impossible to answer such rapid-fire questions without due preparation. 若無事前好好準備，根本不可能回答如此（急促地）一個緊接一個、上氣不接下氣也似的問題。

    如果只想平鋪直敘形容一個人說話太快，令聽者吃不消，可以這樣描述：
    *He would speak so fast that you would barely have time to register each sentence before he moves on to the next one. 他說話速度之快，是你還未聽好上一句話，他已經開始了下一句了。//
