為什麼這篇that makes sense中文鄉民發文收入到精華區:因為在that makes sense中文這個討論話題中,有許多相關的文章在討論,這篇最有參考價值!作者scju (QQ)看板Eng-Class標題[文法] 詞典中"make sense th...
大家好,請問一下
在https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/gash看到這樣的解釋:
The noun "gash" describes a wound or cut, so it makes sense that as a verb,
"gash" describes the act of making that wound or cut, as in, people signing
up for a knife skills class taught by a chef because they are tired of
gashing their fingers when chopping vegetables.
想問的是"so it makes sense that as a verb"這裡,查詞典發現,"make sense"後面如
果接名詞,有下列用法:
1. makes sense (for sb) to do sth、make (some) sense of sth (朗文)
2. You're not making much sense (to me). (Merriam-Webster's Advanced
Learner's English Dictionary, online)
但沒有看到"make sense"後面直接接that的用法,難道它省略了介系詞?還是that在這裡
當副詞用?
請教一下,謝謝!

難道"it makes sense that as a verb"中的"that as a verb"是that引導的介系詞片語
作為此句的真主詞,而it只是虛主詞?
(換句話說,that as a verb也可看成當作一個「大名詞」用的另類名詞片語)
所以也可以寫成that as a verb makes sense.
如果是這樣,那以後看到it開頭的句子,後面又有that,心中就要留意是不是這種句型了
,因為一般名詞子句比較好分辨,這種that引導的介系詞片語當名詞用的狀況,
似乎比較少見QQ

原來這一整句要一起看
so it makes sense that as a verb,
"gash" describes the act of making that wound or cut
as a verb講的其實就是後面的"gash"。
換句話說,as a verb在這裡就是介系詞片語當形容詞用,修飾"gash"。
(查了一下,也可稱之為前導性修飾語introductory modifier)

如果把as a verb認定為修飾"gash",那它是形容詞。
如果把as a verb認定為修飾"describes"或整句,那它就是副詞。
其實我認為不管哪一種說法,實際解讀語意時可說是沒有差異。
之前我有一篇文章也是討論類似的文法修飾問題,可參考最後的結論,
