【農業也是自然科學──取法自然 維護農業生產力永續】

中興大學副校長 #黃振文 談他對植物益生菌的研究緣起：

有一次，我們在溪湖鎮發現一塊苦瓜田的植株生育特別良好，少有病害發生，取樣回到實驗室分析後，發現該農田的土壤擁有豐富且多樣化的微生物族群，是屬於一種「抑病土（suppressive soil）」，當中有許多拮抗微生物菌類能夠抑制壞菌感染作物，這是非常有趣的現象。

當時中興大學孫守恭教授與我決定以自然為師，效法抑病土防病的原理，在詢問農友栽培苦瓜過程的肥培管理之後，我們利用多種農業廢棄物，結合微量肥料製成「孫黃（S-H）土壤添加物」施用於田間，試驗分析發現這種方法確實可誘發土中微生物大量增殖，有效防治多種作物的土媒病害。

//The freedom of thought, and the thought itself, is valuable because it is heavy to take, and the curiosity of "To Know The Cause of Things" (LSE motto) has its inconvenient cost. Asking for freedom would paradoxically cost your freedom in the suppressive state. Knowledge could benefit us in the future, but the wisdom can be only sensed from a series of struggles and ordeals. Although being a public intellectual or philosopher could be painful, but as a man or woman, it is an honour.

In terms of the painfulness, going through enforced disappearance, political interrogation, forced confession, solitary confinement, physical torture, the fear of being indefinitely detained, being isolated from family, lawyer and everyone, and now the threat of kidnapping again as retaliation, and the Chinese state media's witch-hunt bullying and labelling, so the eternal uncertainty haunts in the rest of my life. You can imagine how painful it is in every step. If in that predicament I cannot fight for my non-guilty, then I must fight for my freedom and survival no matter what will it cost.//
