From their native home in Peru, potatoes have spread all over the world, becoming a staple in many countries. One of those countries is the U.S., where we like to eat them boiled, baked, fried and mashed. They’ve also become part of our language, as you’ll see from the idioms below.
原生於祕魯，現在普及於全世界的馬鈴薯，已經成為許多國家的主食，其中一個國家就是美國。美國人喜歡吃水煮、烤、炸馬鈴薯，還有馬鈴薯泥。當然，potato 馬鈴薯這個字也成為美語的一部分。

What would a potato do if you put it on a couch? Well, it would just sit there doing nothing. 1⃣So a couch potato is a lazy person who just sits around watching TV. And if they sit there long enough, they may even start to look like a potato! Ex: Since Dan got Netflix, he’s turned into a real couch potato.
如果你把一棵馬鈴薯放在沙發上會發生什麼事？嗯，它就會動也不動地坐在那裡。所以 a couch potato 就是形容「一直坐在沙發上看電視的懶人」，而且如果坐得夠久，他們也會越來越像顆馬鈴薯！如：Since Dan got Netflix, he’s turned into a real couch potato.（丹自從有了網飛帳號後，就成了一顆貨真價實的沙發馬鈴薯。）

Americans like to eat big Idaho potatoes—the bigger the better. 2⃣So what does “small potatoes” mean? It means a tiny or insignificant person, thing or amount. Ex: Last week’s storm was small potatoes compared to the hurricane we had two years ago.
美國人愛吃愛達荷州黃褐皮馬鈴薯，越大顆越讚。所以，small potato是什麼意思呢？指的是那些「不起眼或不重要的小人物；微不足道的小事；聊勝於無的數量」。如：Last week’s storm was small potatoes compared to the hurricane we had two years ago.（跟兩年前的颶風比起來，上禮拜的暴風雨根本只是小意思。）

When you bake a potato, you have to be careful when taking it out of the oven because it may be too hot to handle. As an idiom, 3⃣ a “hot potato” is a difficult or controversial issue that people avoid dealing with or discussing. Ex: Gun control is a political hot potato in the U.S.
當你烤好一顆馬鈴薯，你必須小心翼翼把它拿出烤箱，因為它會燙到你幾乎無法拿。因此hot potato在諺語中就是指「燙手山芋，難以處理或具爭議性的議題」，大家都不想碰觸或討論。如：Gun control is a political hot potato in the U.S.（槍枝管制在美國一直是燙手山芋。）

The phrase “hot potato” also appears in another idiom with a different meaning: 4⃣ “drop sb./sth. like a hot potato,” which means to abandon someone or something as quickly as possible, usually to avoid potential problems. Ex: Kim dropped her boyfriend like a hot potato when she found out he had a criminal record.
hot potato也出現在另一組諺語中，不過意思完全不一樣：drop sb./sth. like a hot potato，這個諺語是指「在事情變大條之前，儘快擺脫某人或某事」，如：Kim dropped her boyfriend like a hot potato when she found out he had a criminal record.（金在發現男友有前科的時候，就馬上擺脫他了。）

Corn is a grain with a special place in the hearts of Americans. First introduced to early settlers by the Indians, it has since become a staple of the American diet, used to make everything from popcorn and muffins to corn chips and corn syrup. Naturally, corn has become part of our language as well.
玉米在美國人心中是種特別的榖物。一開始是由印地安人介紹給最早的一批移民者，自此之後成為美國的重要主食之一，玉米可以用來作成各式各樣的食物，從爆米花、瑪芬、玉米片到玉米糖漿皆可見。理所當然地，玉米也成為英語語言的一部分。

Driving though the Midwest, you’ll pass by endless fields of corn, which is eaten by animals and people alike. The adjective1⃣ “corn-fed” is used to describe animals fed or fattened with corn, i.e. “corn-fed hogs.” What about people? If you call someone corn-fed, it means they look plump, well-fed and robust. Ex: Several corn-fed Midwesterners tried out for the football team. When describing people and places, corn-fed can also mean unsophisticated and provincial. Ex: Karen grew up in a small, corn-fed Kansas town.
只要開車經過美國中西部，你一定會路過一望無際的玉米田，這是種植給動物與人類吃的。形容詞corn-fed就是用來形容以玉米餵食或增肥的動物，如corn-fed hogs（玉米豬）。那人呢？如果你說某人是corn-fed，其實是說這人看起來豐潤、吃得很好、容光煥發，如：Several corn-fed Midwesterners tried out for the football team.（好幾位厚實健壯的中西部人前來參加美式足球隊選拔。）corn-fed如果用來敘述人或地方，也可以指「未經世事、天真的」以及「守舊狹隘的」，如：Karen grew up in a small, corn-fed Kansas town.（凱倫在堪薩斯州的一個守舊的小村落長大。）

Cornflakes are a popular American breakfast, and if someone peed in them, you’d be pretty mad, right? 2⃣That’s exactly what “pee/piss in sb.’s cornflakes means. Ex: Gee, I wonder who peed in the manager’s cornflakes today.
玉米片是非常受歡迎的美國式早餐，如果有人在上面撒尿，你一定會抓狂吧！這就是pee/piss in sb.’s cornflakes的意思。如：Gee, I wonder who peed in the manager’s cornflakes today.（老天，不知道今天是誰惹毛了經理。）
Since corn is such a simple and common type of food, can you guess what the 3⃣ adjective “corny” means? If a joke, story or song is corny, it’s silly, trite or overly sentimental. Ex: Dad always tells such corny jokes. 4⃣ The adjective “cornball” has the same meaning. Ex: Martin has such a cornball sense of humor. And it can also be a noun. Ex: Martin is such a cornball.

After covering dairy products, it’s time to move on to another kind of food—bread. Bread has long been a staple of the Western diet since ancient times, so of course it has made its way into all kinds of proverbs and idioms.
聊完乳製品之後，我們來聊聊另一種食品：麵包。自古以來，麵包一直是西方飲食不可或缺的主食，所以跟麵包相關的諺語與生活用語想必也不少。

Let’s start with a proverb that has its origins in the Bible: 1⃣ Bread is the staff of life. If you’re picturing someone using a baguette as a staff to walk with, it may give you a sense of the proverb’s meaning: bread is what supports us in our lives, or provides us with sustenance. But bread here is also a symbol of all food, so the real meaning is that one must eat in order to survive. Ex: I know you’re busy, but don’t forget to eat—bread is the staff of life.
先來看一個源自《聖經》的諺語：Bread is the staff of life.（麵包是生命的拐杖。）想像一下用法國麵包當做拐杖走路的樣子，大概就能理解這句諺語的意思：麵包是支持生活的必需品，供給我們營養。不過麵包在這裡也是象徵所有食物之意，所以真正的意思是「民以食為天」。如：I know you’re busy, but don’t forget to eat—bread is the staff of life.（我知道你很忙，但別忘了吃飯啊，民以食為天。）

Another proverb with Biblical origins: 2⃣Man does not live by bread alone. Here, bread means “food and shelter.” So the proverb means that beyond their physical needs, people also need mental or spiritual sustenance. Ex: He may be wealthy, but man does not live by bread alone.
另一個諺語也是出自《聖經》：Man does not live by bread alone.（人活著不只是為了溫飽。）bread在這句話中指的是「食物與住所」。因此，這個諺語要人們超越生理需求、滋養心靈。如：He may be wealthy, but man does not live by bread alone.（他或許很富有，但是人活著不是只為了溫飽。）

Since bread is a symbol for sustenance, there are also idioms like 3⃣ “earn one’s daily bread,” which means “make a living.” Ex: The man earns his daily bread as a taxi driver. 4⃣ And “take the bread out of sb.’s mouth” means to deprive them of their means of living. Ex: Lowering wages would be taking the bread out of workers’ mouths.
因為麵包是食物的象徵，所以也有如earn one’s daily bread這樣的片語，指「維持生計」。如：The man earns his daily bread as a taxi driver.（這個男人當計程車司機維持生計。）而take the bread out of sb.’s mouth則是指「搶某人飯碗」，如：Lowering wages would be taking the bread out of workers’ mouths.（減薪對員工而言是剝奪了他們的飯碗。）

5⃣ And finally there’s “break bread.” Can you guess what it means? It means to have a meal. In the old days, a family would share a loaf of bread at each meal, and everyone would break off pieces to eat. Ex: It’s been a long time since I broke bread with Michael.
最後來看看break bread這個短語。猜猜看，這是什麼意思？答案是「吃飯」。古時候的家庭，每餐都有一條麵包分給全家人，每個人會掰一塊麵包來吃。如：It’s been a long time since I broke bread with Michael.（我已經很久沒跟麥可吃頓飯了。）
