彼得兔每週都有英文單字作業，進入高年級之後，學校對英文字的要求是「用英文解釋英文」。

前幾週他還會拿字典查中文意思，後來我們發現這樣不行，一方面是沒有效率，二方面失去了要學生用英文去理解意思的原意。

今天有個字「sign」，英文解釋是「something showing something else exists or might happen or exist in the future.」彼得兔把這句像繞口令的句子反覆唸了幾次，卻想不透它的意思。

我試著引導他找出答案（雖然我知道這裡指的意思是「徵兆」）：「某件事代表可能發生或是未來會出現....」

彼得兔似乎有點聽懂：「是不是某件事發生之前，會出現的東西？」

「對，就是中文的『徵兆』。」既然他已經推敲出原意，那我就不妨告訴他中文意思。（醫療中很常出現這個字，xx sign就是某種疾病會出現的徵兆）

「那『在暗巷看到一隻黑貓』是不是就是倒楣的預兆sign？」彼得兔突然舉了這個例子。

「嗯....好像可以。『一出門就踩到狗大便』也是倒楣的sign～～」Peter Fu又追加一個例子。

史迪普停下手邊的工作，看我們父子邊讀英文邊聊五四三。

單字看完之後要做練習題，就是把先前讀的單字放進填空格裡。其中一題從前後文讀起來，就是要放「sign」這個字。

「這個簡單！我知道！就是sign」彼得兔自信滿滿地把答案填入，結果他把「sign」寫成「sing」。

「你在寫什麼啦！『sing』是唱歌耶～～啦啦啦～～♫♫～～♩～♩」 Peter Fu跟彼得兔兩個人開始大唱。

史迪普起身離開，邊走邊搖頭。

「你是不是覺得我們兩個很莫名其妙？」Peter Fu問史迪普。
