這題考的是句意的平行，而不完全是文法上的平行

the earliest writing
(1) was NOT a direct rendering of speech
(2) began as
(3) later merged with

not (1) but ( (2) and (3) )

not...but... 和 ...and... 的平行應該隔開會比較清楚
而且 began 和 merge 平行，才會比較通順 看我上面 ( (2) and (3) ) 多加一組括號
另外，這題的"likely"是副詞用法。並非形容詞的 be likely to
所以 more than likely 要同時寫上去，符合慣用及比較原則。
more than likely 意思就是比 likely (=probably) 的機率更高

(D) (E) 不能選的理由不只有因為笨拙(你是想說 redundancy 冗贅 嗎？)

(D) 用被動式跟 merged 不平行
(E) 沒有than (而且比D還笨拙)

the earliest writing 當主詞
(E) 用 it was more likely that it began
非常的騙字數 主詞都是 the earliest writing 幹嘛還要一個虛主詞重新寫一次句子

(E)選項的贅詞之多就好像下面這個句子
I am not a teacher, but it is more than likely that I am your friend.

這題算是有點難度的題目，希望這樣的說明能讓你比較清楚唷～
