「Hang」を使った6つの定番フレーズ

今回のコラムでは、ネイティブの日常会話では頻繁に耳にする「Hang」という単語を使った定番フレーズを6つご紹介いたします。どのフレーズも、日常生活のなかで誰もが使う機会が必ずあるはずなので覚えておきましょう！

1) Hang in (there)
→「頑張る」
--------------------------------------------------
　
Hang inは、困難な状況や辛い時期を耐え抜くことを表すフレーズで、日本語の「頑張る」に相当する表現です。特に、諦めかけている人や挫折しそうな人に「Hang in there!」と励まようにして用いられ、「諦めないで頑張れ！」や「くじけずに頑張れ！」を意味します。
　
✔「Hang in there」は励まし言葉の決まり文句。
　
✔アメリカ人は「How are you?」の質問に対し「Hanging in there」と返答することもあり、「色々と大変だけど何とか頑張っているよ」を意味する。
　
＜例文＞
　
I know you're tired but hang in there. You're almost done!
（疲れているのはわかるけど、もうすぐで終わるから最後まで頑張って。）
　
Don't give up now! Hang in there!
（今さら諦めたらダメだよ。頑張りな！）
　
Work has been pretty stressful but I'm hanging in there.
（仕事でストレスが結構たまっているけど、何とか頑張っているよ。）

2) Hang out
→「時間を過ごす / 遊ぶ」

Hang outは、友達と時間を過ごしたり、海で時間を過ごしたりすること、またはショッピングモールや公園などをブラブラする意味としても使われ、日本語の「遊ぶ」に相当する表現です。例えば、友達に「今週遊ぼう」と誘うのであれば、「Let's hang out this weekend.」と言います。「昨日、友達と遊びました」を「I played with my friends yesterday.」と言っている人を時々見かけますが、これはちょっと違和感のある表現です。子供同士が遊ぶことはplayを使って表現しても構いませんが、大人の場合は「I hung out with my friends yesterday.」と言うほうがナチュラルです。しかし、ゲームやスポーツなどで遊ぶことを表す場合は、大人でもplayを使って表現します。（例：Play basketball, play chessなど）
　
＜例文＞
　
Are you free tomorrow night? Let's hang out.
（明日の夜空いてる？遊ぼうよ。）
　
I hung out at the mall today.
（今日はショッピングモールでブラブラしていました。）
　
I'm hanging out with Jeff tonight. Do you want to come? I think we're going to hang out in Shibuya.
（今夜ジェフと遊ぶけど来る？渋谷で遊ぶ予定だよ。）

3) Hang on
→「ちょっと待って」
--------------------------------------------------
　
Hang onは「ちょっと待って」を意味し、Wait a minuteやHold onと同様の意味を持ちますが、より口語的な言い方になります。「電話を切らないで少々お待ちください」、「ちょっと待って。まだ行かないで」、「ちょっと待って様子を見よう」のように様々な状況でよく使われていますが、使用する際のポイントは待ち時間が“短い”ことです。
　
✔「Hang on a minute/second」の表現も「ちょっと待って」と言う場合の決まり文句。
　
✔その他「しがみつく」も意味する。
　
＜例文＞
　
Hang on. I'll be ready in 5 minutes.
（ちょっと待って。あと5分！）
　
Can you hang on a minute?
（少々お待ちいただけますか？）
　
Hang on to this rope and don't let go.
（このロープにしがみついて離さないようにっ！）

4) Hang up
→「電話を切る」

Hang upは「電話を切る」ことを意味します。正式には、Hang up the phoneですが、日常会話ではthe phoneを省いてHang upとだけ言うのが一般的です。例えば、「電話を切らないでください」は「Don't hang up (the phone).」と言います。また、電話をしている相手と喧嘩などをして一方的に電話を切る場合は「Hang up on ____」と表現し、空欄には電話が切られた側の人がフォローします。
　
＜例文＞
　
I'm going to hang up and call you back.
（電話を切って折り返しかけなおします。）
　
Sorry. I accidentally hung up the phone.
（ごめん。間違えて電話を切っちゃった。）
　
When I told my wife I was going to go out drinking, she hung up on me.
（妻に飲みに行くって連絡したら、電話を切られました。）

5) Hang around
→「ブラブラする」
--------------------------------------------------
　
特に当てもなくどこかをウロウロしたり、ブラブラしたりすることをHang aroundと言います。ポイントは、“目的なく”ブラブラすることで、特に待機する状況でよく用いられるフレーズです。例えば、彼女がデパートでショッピングする際、「僕はこの辺でブラブラしているよ。終わったら連絡して」と言うなら「I'm going to hang around this area. Text me when you're done.」となります。
　
✔その他、家でゴロゴロすることも意味する。
　
＜例文＞
　
I had about an hour to kill so I just hung around the park.
（1時間ほど時間を潰さないといけなかったので、公園でブラブラしていました。）
　
You can hang around here if you want.
（よかったら、ここで待っててもいいよ。）
　
I hung around the house all day and watched T.V.
（一日中、家でゴロゴロしてテレビを見ていました。）

6) Hangover
→「二日酔い」

英語では二日酔いをHangoverと言います。「私は二日酔いです」と言うなら「I have a hangover」もしくは「I am hungover」のどちらでもOKですが、Haveを使って表現する場合はhangover（名詞）、Be動詞の場合はhungover（形容詞）になるので使い分けには気をつけましょう。
　
＜例文＞
　
I'm so hungover. I drank way too much last night.
（二日酔いだ〜。昨日は飲みすぎた。）
　
Peter called in sick. I think he has a hangover.
（ピーターさんが体調不良で今日は休みと連絡がありました。おそらく、二日酔いだと思いますが。）
　
Does Ukon really prevent hangovers?

#相似詞語辨析06

act, action

Act 除了作動詞外,也可用作名詞,故很易與另一名詞action混淆不清。請注意,它們之間有如下的區別:
(一)一般說來,act 指個別具體的行動;action指抽象的行為。
(二) act 大都指短暫的、簡單的動作; action 指較長的 複雜的行為。例如我們應該說 the action of a machine,而不說the act of a machine.
(三)在下列場合,只能用 act,不能用 action; the act of cruelty, folly, mercy, God (天災), jumping, stealing, walking kindness, madness...
(四)在下列場合,只能用 action,不能用act: to take action, in speech and action, a man of action, put into action, ready for action, to come(bring) into action... 在某些習語和 表示“作用”的涵義時,也只能用 action,不用 act。例:Actions speak louder than words; Chemical action(化學作用); capilary action(毛細管作用); the action of light(heat)(光(熱的作 用)......。

下面例句說明 act 和 action 的分野:
The pickpocket was caught in the act.
扒手在行竊時被抓住了。
Trying to cover up the mistake is an act of folly.
試圖隱藏錯誤是一件愚蠢的事。
In the act of picking up the ball, he slipped and tell.
他在拾球的時候滑倒了。
Don't take any action.
不要採取任何行動。
He is a man of action.
他是一個很活躍的人。
The government must take action to prevent unemployment from deteriorating
政府採取行動防止失業情況惡化。

有時候,act 和 action 之間的界限並不是很清楚的,例如 在下列句中,它們可互換使用:
It was an act (or action) that they were to regret bitterly.
Her heroic act (or action) will be long remembered.
You will be judged by your acts (or actions).
最後還需補充一點,在指某個行為或行動的特徵時,應用 act, 不用action。例如: an act of thoughtfulness; the act of a fool,但是,在該行為或動作之前如有形容詞修飾時,則改用action,不用 act。 例如我們說: the act of a careless person; I don't like his careless action.

📰 Why Covid-19 Is Spreading Again: Fatigue, Colder Weather, Eased Restrictions

Cases have ebbed in Sunbelt states like Arizona but have gone up throughout parts of U.S.

📌 這篇文章跟進Covid-19的最新情況。標題提了三個原因為什麽病毒再擴散。注意ebb這個動詞，本意是退潮，這裡引申指個案數目下降。

New coronavirus cases hit their highest level since mid-August on Wednesday, a sign of a fall surge predicted by public-health officials.
For the eighth time since October began, newly reported cases nationally ticked above 50,000, fueled by simmering outbreaks in every region of the country.

For the past week, the seven-day average of new cases was outpacing the 14-day average in more than 40 states and Washington, D.C., according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Johns Hopkins University figures. When the seven-day average is higher than the 14-day average, it suggests cases are rising.

📌 這兩段交代個案數字的變動。hit their highest level 達到最高的水平，a fall surge 秋天激增，the seven-day average 七天平均數，the 14-day average 14天平均數都是很管用的用語。

Hospitalizations also have swelled across the U.S. in recent weeks, though deaths haven’t yet surged. Deaths often lag behind new cases and hospitalizations, given the duration of the disease. The seven-day average of daily deaths attributed to Covid-19 has been hovering around 700 for about three weeks, down from around 1,000 two months ago.

The U.S. has more fatalities than any other country in the world—more than 217,600 since the pandemic began. But it doesn’t have the highest percentage of cases that are fatal. About 2.7% of reported cases in the U.S. have been fatal, according to data from Johns Hopkins. That figure has declined in recent months as treatments have improved and testing has expanded, allowing more mild and asymptomatic cases to be detected. Since the summer, younger people have made up a growing share of new U.S. cases.

A number of factors are likely contributing to the rise, some epidemiologists and public-health researchers said. The virus has spread to more rural counties and other communities, exposing vulnerable populations that hadn’t yet experienced it significantly and who are now reacting instead of taking steps to prevent the virus, public-health researchers said.

Some people have grown tired of restrictions on their movements and might be taking more risks than they did in the spring, they said. Mixed and inconsistent messaging from federal and local officials over preventive measures has sowed confusion and complacency. Some local governments have eased restrictions on businesses and requirements to wear masks. Meanwhile, college students returned to campuses, leading to some spreading of the virus, and the onset of cooler weather has led many Americans indoors, where the virus is more transmittable, the public-health researchers said.

📌 這兩段解釋個案數字上升。被提出的原因包括：一些人開始厭倦針對移動的限制 (restrictions)，聯邦和地方官員 (federal and local officials) 就預防措施 (preventive measures) 所發出的訊息混合的(mixed) 和不一致 (inconsistent)。大學生回到校園 (college students return to campuses) 和更涼快的天氣開始 (the onset of cooler weather)也是原因。
