這個禮拜Presentality的Andrew來分享英文寫作的節奏!

我的工作需要看非常多的英文。

其中有英文母語的人寫的，也有非母語的人寫的。最近，我注意到一個兩者之間很明顯的差別。這個差別很少有人提到，因為它無關文法正確，也不是有學問的用語，或是文雅的詞彙。

是句子的長短。

Well，更正確的來說，是長句跟短句的交錯。我發現，非母語人士寫的英文句子，不但比英文母語的人寫的長，而且是大部分句子都很長。

母語的人，尤其是很會寫的人，則是會把長句跟短句混合搭配。
那又怎樣？

你可能會說 ok，以英文為母語的人比較會用短的句子，那又怎樣？句子的長短，跟我寫作的好壞，有關嗎？

關係可大了。

就像音樂，或是影片，文字也是「內容」。只要是「內容」，就有它的節奏。你可以想像一首曲子，從頭到尾都是很長的音，而且一點變化都沒有嗎？或是一部很長的影片，從頭到尾都是很長的畫面，而且一點節奏的變化都沒有嗎？

Well actually，你應該可以想像，這些就是要幫助我們睡眠的。
如果你不想要你的讀者覺得無聊或甚至睡著，我建議適度變換你文字的節奏。

但我們先看案例。

我拿一篇台灣人寫的文，跟另一篇美國人寫的，來做比較：把每個句子都分拆成不同的段落，句子的長短就一目了然了。

📌 台灣案例：Taipei Times Opinion

7. Third, China’s new NASDAQ-style stock board — the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR board — has emerged as a fast-growing capital markets center for Chinese companies at a time when rising China-US tensions have triggered concerns about their prospects of listing in New York, posing a growing challenge to the Hong Kong stock exchange.

8. On the other hand, Taiwan’s economic fundamentals, the central bank’s adoption of extraordinary monetary easing and the government’s fiscal policies have fueled continued rallies in the nation’s stock market since last year.

9. It might be too early to tell how long the consolidation trend might last, as a resurgent COVID-19 outbreak is coloring the global economic outlook, but some insight can be drawn from the stock market:

都是一堆很長的句子對不對？我們來看美國人寫的句子，也是一個主流媒體的 opinion 文。

📌 Note: 即使是比較長的句子，這位作者也會用標點符號拆散它：She is willing to sacrifice her leadership post — and risk her political career — to continue calling out Donald Trump’s Big Lie. 這就好比用句點一樣，讓我們讀起來有點停頓休息的時間。

📌 注意到了嗎？

台灣人寫的英文，句子都偏長，而且長度都差不多。
美國人寫的就不一樣了：一個只有五個字的句子開頭，然後一堆稍微長一點的句子，然後再來一串短句。

你可能懷疑我故意挑選很極端了例子出來，而且幹嘛專門打台灣人呢？

所以想到這裡，我從我的書架上，隨便挑了兩本跟科技有關的書出來。左邊的，是美國人，矽谷知名投資人 Peter Thiel。右邊的是德國人，但注意了，是一個英文非常好的德國人。他不但是世界經濟論壇的創辦人，研究所也是在哈佛大學唸的。

📌 兩本書 Introduction 是怎麼寫的？

5月28日是 ＃世界經期衛生日，又稱 ＃世界月經日，旨在打破對於月經的各種禁忌，正視 ＃月經貧窮 ，提高全世界人們對於良好經期衛生管理重要性的關注與認識。
　
【月經貧窮（Period Poverty）】
　
＃月經貧窮 指的是女性因經濟壓力無法負擔月經時期所需的生理用品費用，不得不降低更換生理用品的頻率，而這樣的行為更容易產生感染、發炎併發其他疾病等問題。近年，更因疫情的影響，以致本就因經濟狀況所苦的弱勢女性，更深陷困境之中。
　
【月經羞恥（Period-shaming）】
　
除了月經貧窮的問題外，女性還得面對 ＃月經羞恥的問題。
　
在我們成長過程當中，月經是羞於直接說出口的詞彙，「那個」、「好朋友」、「大姨媽」成了「不能說出口的月經」的替代名詞；衛生棉不叫做衛生棉，被叫做「蘋果麵包」；購買生理用品時，會被特別用紙袋裝起來；月經來潮的女生不能祭祀、進廟拜拜，因為經血被視為「不乾淨的」，恐會褻瀆神佛；不僅衛生棉廣告會用藍色的液體來代表月經，就連月經emoji以血滴內褲作為符號的提案都被否決，而改為一滴血🩸。一個正常、自然的生理現象，卻往往被視為需要掩蓋的不潔現象。
　
面對月經，我認為我們應該抱持著開放的心態，從教育、社會風氣、媒體傳播、或是從自身開始反思，每一個人都可以是消除月經汙名化的一份子。
　
🩸女性的生理用品🩸
　
衛生棉、衛生棉條、布衛生棉、月亮杯、生理褲、月經內褲，面對五花八門的生理用品，如何挑選適合自己的用品，減少經期當中的不舒適感，是女性在月經初潮後，就得面對的課題。台灣女性最常使用的生理用品為衛生棉；而棉條、月亮杯較偏侵入式的生理用品，且因需要練習，才能順利使用，在台灣普遍接受度較低。（ ＃防疫減少外出期間， 有棉條和月亮杯的大家也不妨趁這個時機多多練習，過程中不但能夠更了解自己的身體外，相信也能有更舒適的經期體驗）。

近期疫情嚴峻，常常看見許多第一線的醫護人員，每天出勤都必須穿著密不透風的全套防護衣(俗稱兔寶寶裝)，衣服與口罩不能隨時脫下，而防護衣的穿脫又必須依循一定的標準流程，確實消毒以保障民眾及醫護人員的安全，這樣的情形導致醫護人員無法隨時補充水分、上廁所外，更使女性醫護人員遇到月經來潮，需要更換生理用品時，面臨耗時且不便的情況。

香港的彌敦道全長是3.6公里,這裏1丁目至7丁目的長度是2.6公里， The total length of Nathan Road in HK is 3.6 km, here the length from section 1 to7 is 2.6 km

相等於三分之二的彌敦道那麼長啦, 來這裏吃、買、玩交通相當方便 which is 2/3 long of Nathan Rd, is quite convenient to come eat, buy, and play for transportation

因為由天神1至7町目，橫跨了三個地鐵站 Because there are 3 subway stations are crossed from Tenjin sections 1 to 7

分別是「南森町駅」、「扇町駅 」和「天神橋筋六町目駅」，

有多達800間店鋪，當中包括餐廳、藥妝、衣服、 U to 800 shops including restaurants, cosmeceuticals n clothes,

築地為東京廚房、大阪有黑門市場、札幌就有二條市場做代表 Tsukiji is Tokyo Kitchen, Kuromon Market in Osaka, and Nijo Market in Sapporo

札幌廚房起源於明治初期, 起初只是一排排的魚檔, The Sapporo kitchen originated in the early Meiji period.At first it was just rows of fish stalls.

發展至今，已經有好多餐廳、乾貨和生果售賣 Until now there have been many restaurants, dried goods and fruit sales.

二條市場最大的賣點, 就是地理位置方便 The biggest selling point of the Nijo markets is the convenient location

說回二條市場, 有大約15間水產公司和魚店，販賣當日入貨最新鮮的海鮮。 Speaking of Nijo Market, there are about 15 aquatic companies and fish shops that sell the freshest seafood that day.

除了鮮魚之外，亦有好多店舖販賣乾貨和海產加工品。In addition to fresh fish, there are also many shops selling dry goods and processed seafood.

有好多店舖提供寄送服務, 當然是要附加費用啦。 There are many shops offering delivery services, of course at an additional cost

北海道有三大名蟹, 就是帝皇蟹、松葉蟹，以及毛蟹。There are 3 famous crabs in Hokkaido, namely emperor crab, Matsuba crab and hairy crab.

帝皇蟹又細分為鱈場蟹、棘蟹、花咲蟹與油蟹4種，King crab is further subdivided into 4 types: Red King Crab, spiny crab, flower crab and oil crab.
