你認為，翻譯有標準答案嗎？

昨晚基礎翻譯班的最後一堂課
我分享了知名學者 Peter Newmark 的一段話
和同學互相勉勵：

There is no such thing as a perfect, ideal, or "correct" translation.
完美、理想或「正確」的翻譯並不存在
A translator is always trying to extend his knowledge and improve his means of expression;
譯者隨時都在努力擴大認知範圍、精進自己的表達方式
he is always pursuing facts and words.
*他們總在追尋文字與真相。
*為 gender neutral，譯成複數

做了十年以上的翻譯
比起尋找「標準答案」
我更覺得翻譯是一種「嘗試接近的藝術」

每一次的翻譯都得有所取捨
因為中英文字、句構、文化上的差異
要「完美翻譯」幾乎是不可能的事

💡舉個例子：「一兼二顧，摸蜊仔兼洗褲」

如果譯成
Killing two birds with one stone.（一石二鳥）
語意上可能八九不離十
但整個畫面和語感就完全不同了

如果譯成
You can wash your pants and catch clams at the same time!
（洗褲子的同時還可以抓蛤蜊）
外國人可能會疑惑：Why catch clams?
覺得兩件事兜不起來

或許也是因為翻譯很難有「標準答案」
才會這麼耐人尋味
讓喜愛文字的人不斷地追尋

I think there aren't many people who have perfect Taiwanese, so let's support each other and encourage one another to practice more. When you can't quite get the words out (wa gua gua gua (watch the video and you'll know)) it's okay to laugh at yourself! These things are bound to happen when you learn a new language 😝.
