    【影響世界的數學家】- 演算人性自私自利

    1922年出生的佐治派思（George Price），是個無神論的數學家。他的人生相當「孤立」，除了數學方式程式，基本沒有其他。太太是天主教徒，與主張無神論的佐治溝通十分困難，最終兩人在50年代分開。

    離婚後，佐治到了倫敦，流連圖書館研究數學。一天，他在圖書館找到達爾文的進化論，於是打算用數學去推演當中想法。不過，令他著迷的，卻是進化論中一個邏輯迷思。

    在此先簡單談一談這個邏輯。佐治留意到，進化論內指出，比較有生存優勢的，會有較大延續後代（offspring）的機會。而當時學界主要認為，這就是為什麼人類會力爭向上，怎至會自私利己的原因。「因為要生存，便自然會保護自己的優勢，這是天性，是基因使然，與生俱來。」這是學界主流解釋「自私」的說法。

    不過，所有學者都在同一個位置打了死結，未能推演下去：

    如果這推論是真的話，哪為何會有「陌生人為救別人而死」的情況發生呢？就算善良這個特質很吸引異性，可是人都死了，何來繁衍後代？

    佐治對這個問題很在意。於是，他全力用數學去推演整個邏輯。終於，一個晚上，他完整地用數學計算，推演了全個邏輯，建立了一條數學方程式「Price equation」，確立了「人的所有行為都是因為利己才會進行」，這個配合進化論的說法。佐治把推演寄給進化論學者威廉咸美頓（William D. Hamilton），咸美頓看到這篇突破學界的數學推演，驚為天人，馬上不理背景，全力支持佐治發表這篇論文。震撼學界的結果，佐治得到極高名氣，他亦與咸美頓成為畢生致友。

    可是，佐治是個踏實人，思考從不停步。發表Price equation後，他依然經常看到衝入火場「捨身救人」的新聞、無私助人德蘭修女的事蹟等，慢慢地，他發現了太多太多巧合、太多太多善良行為，而且這些捨己行為，全部都不能用Price equation解釋得到。他頓然意識到，如果沒有神，沒有外力，不可能有這些控制與巧合。

    結果這刻，他與大多數科學家一樣，都由無神論轉為基督徒，並且想用數學及嚴謹的向善法則，去過基督徒人生。

    真正的問題出現了，由他推演出來的Price equation，證明人性只因利己的方程式，怎樣好呢？佐治去找咸美頓，要求他告訴大眾，Price equation有錯；不過，咸美頓卻希望有指出錯誤的數學推演。佐治千方百計去計算，卻無法推翻自己的Price equation，咸美頓亦不能空口告訴大眾方程式有錯，結果兩人同困死胡同。

    最終，佐治想到，他要以自己去證明：「人，是可以無私無己的。」他把所有家當都捐出去，開放家居，任由露宿者住；只要有須要，家中的任何東西都可以隨便拿走。不單如此，凡有吃的，他都交給露宿者；遇見不暖的，他便把身上的衣服送給別人。這樣過人生，他很快便一無所有，侍人數月，他已經變成一個每天只能喝到一小杯政府救濟奶、衣不蔽體的露宿者。

    這天，咸美頓在街走著，看到冷得將近死去的佐治，才知道朋友近況。得到咸美頓的幫助，佐治身體慢慢地好起來。過後，咸美頓也很照顧這位朋友，把一些其他的數學推演工作交給佐治，讓他可以營生。

    不過，佐治心中只著眼一個問題。

    「到底我有沒有辦法證明，人性本善無私無己？我是不是推演出，利私邪惡的price equation？怎樣才能證明人無私心？我一心要去證明Price equation出錯，是想出名，還是我想贖罪？我想贖罪，又是不是自私，想自己好過一點？哪我的行為，動機是不是也是自私？不就再次證明Price equation對嗎？」

    1975年1月6日，佐治走不出證明無私，證明Price equation不正確的圈圈。於是，拿起指甲鋏的小刀，割開自己的喉嚨，自殺了。

    後記：
    Price equation至今仍是生物學中一個重要方程式。

    認識George Price的人不多。Google谷歌內，提到他的中文文章，慨嘆地，一篇，也沒有。

    [詞彙區別] people, individual, persons, human, man, mankind, humankind 的區別:

    在寫作的時候，有些同學為了避免重複使用相同的詞彙，卻選用了意義上不盡相同的單字，而無法精確地表達出自己所想傳達的想法。這問題很可能來自於考生平時在語言學習上過於依賴中英翻譯，因此考生在不夠了解某些一字多義的詞彙的情況下，很容易造成讀者的誤解。舉例來說，spend vs. cost vs. take (花費)，borrow vs. lend vs. loan (借)，這些字的中譯都很非常類似，以中文為母語的考生在使用上，只要稍微一不注意，就容易錯誤使用。甚至有些考生會以offspring (子孫; 後代) 來代替 children (小孩)，我們若是查字典了解其義，就會知道 offspring 比較常出現在正式的科學用法上，泛指動物的後代及植物的幼苗。

    為了幫助同學增加詞彙量並且精確地在口說和寫作上使用這些字。我會用使用一個新的同義字系列清楚地區分這些類似的字並幫助同學們在文章中正確地使用它們。同學們也應該在使用這些字之前先查查字典，以了解這些字的使用方式。

    People 的同義字

    ★★★human (human being) ★★★

    我們使用human being這個字來強調我們和動物的不同。 We used human being to stress our difference from animals or aliens (in science fiction).

    1. Dogs can hear much better than humans.
    2. That is no way to treat another human being.

    ★★★man★★★

    我們用man這個字來指男性、全部的人類、或指特定某一時代的人類。 We used man to talk about adult male human or humans as a group (or humans from a particular period of history).

    1. The relationships between men and women are often complex and puzzling.
    2. This is one of the worst diseases known to man.
    3. Man had caused considerable damage to the environment.
    4. Being a modern man today is no different than it was a century ago. It’s all about adhering to principle.

    我們用mankind這個字來強調全部人類這個概念。 We used mankind when we talk about all humans as one large group.

    1. Pollution is something that harms mankind across the globe, and disasters like war and famine have affected mankind all through our history.

    Man and mankind have traditionally been used to mean “all men and women.” Many people now prefer to use humanity, the human race, human beings or people to avoid being sexist. Humankind is used as a gender neutral alternative to “mankind.”

    1. Any person or persons found in possession of illegal substances will be prosecuted.
    2. The police are looking for three separate persons who were in this area.

    People 也是person的複數，可指所有的人類或特定狀況中的一群人。它也可以指所有的國民。

    People can refer to all human beings, or to a group of persons in a particular situation. It can also mean "all the citizens," as in a political leader who understands the needs of the people.

    1. There were at least a thousand people in the audience.
    2. The people are tired of hearing political rhetoric! They want action, not talk.

    我們用individual來強調個人以和團體做區隔。We used individual to stress that a person considered separately rather than as part of a group.

    1. Every individual has rights which must never be taken away.

    除了以上的用法，同學也可以用代名詞 (e.g. everyone, they) 來替換”人們” 這個單字，也可以用形容詞來更明確的指出某一群人(e.g. most, some, a few, all)。

    Summary:
    ✎ 通常會用"people"這個詞彙來指稱一般的社會大眾；另一方面，如果想要去強調一個團體當中的每個人，則會使用"individuals"。

    ✎ 想要將所有人類當成一個大族群去做論述的時候，通常只會用"mankind/humankind"或是"the human race/human beings"等詞彙。

    ✎ 想要去強調一個人的人性面時，通常會用"human being"。

    E.g. How could you do this to another human being? He has rights!

    ✎撰寫科學性質的相關文章時，才會運用到"Homo sapiens"。

    【玳瑚師父玄學論】 《人生三部曲》
    The Trilogy of Life (English version below)

    人生三部曲，並不是談戀愛、結婚生子、百年後掛在牆上。有些人好像是談戀愛後，才變得碎碎念的。很多人也好像是昏了頭才結婚的。有些人以為生兒育女能防老，又好像是養兒煩惱才對咧！好像有點離題了。不好意思，不好意思，馬上言歸正傳。這篇文章「人生三部曲」，所要闡明的是，人生歲月裡的，良好體魄、創業的成功、婚姻的美滿、子女的學業理想、炒樓炒金炒地皮的獲利、疾病的痊癒，及其他等等，都與我們生命中的三種密碼有直接，甚至不可分的關係存在著。而這種精細的密碼，唯有鑽研玄學多年，非常觀察入微的師父，才能知之。

    實不相瞞，吾玳瑚師父，是曉得這些精細密碼的其中一位師父。若人能得知，且懂得運用這生命中精細的密碼於日常生活中，一世無憂也。在吾公佈的近年裡，已有好些人向吾，買取這精細的密碼。不過之前的客人，祇買取其中一種密碼。哈！哈！哈！非她他們之過，因她他們祇知其一，而不知其二。

    The Trilogy of Life is not just about falling in love, getting married and having kids, and being remembered via a photo hung on the wall after a hundred years. Some people become more naggy after being in love. Many people got married after being struck by the dizziness of love. Some people have the misconception that having children is a safeguard for old age but it seems like the offspring is a source of affliction instead. Oh, I have digressed, my apologies. Let us get back to the main topic. The main purpose of this article is to highlight the three secret codes that are inextricable from our lives and how they can help us achieve a sturdy health and physique, success in entrepreneurship, a blissful marriage, good academic results for the kids, profitable investments from real estate and gold, full recovery from illness, etc. These intricate secret codes can only be revealed by a master steeped in the knowledge of Chinese Metaphysics for many years and possessing an acute sense of observation and awareness.

    In all honesty, Master Dai Hu is one of those Masters who are well versed in these secret and intricate codes. Anyone who knows how to leverage on these codes in his or her daily life, he or she will lead a life free of worry. When I first started to impart these secret codes in recent years, many clients had already bought their secret codes from me. However, what they had were only one set of secret code. Ha ha ha! But this is not a mistake of theirs as they only had partial knowledge at that time.

    One of the secret codes is numerals. The others are totem, pattern, Chinese character and English alphabets. I recently divulged the secret codes of totem, patterns and English alphabets and there was inquiries from interested customers already. I would like to give thanks to the many Gods of Wealth for their blessings and protection. Only a Master with much divine assistance is able to bestow happiness, wealth and fortune to all sentient beings!

    Even though you might have received the Trilogy of Life, please remain humble and respectful, be diligent in accumulating merits through virtuous deeds, respect your teachers and elders, be filial to your parents, etc. Only then, you will be assured with a generous stream of merits and fortune for your future.
