#就係香港實習同學BackstageStory #Tobie篇

走進店舖，往往如走馬看花，視線輕率滑過四周，步履只作日常所需的短暫停留。但當我認真凝視每個空間角落，便意識到背後歷史的重量。當為土瓜灣的蝦記麵店和永香冰室做資料搜集的時候，我本著好奇心仔細觀察店舖每一細節。一幅畫，一件裝飾品，不只因著美觀原因而懸在牆上，內裡還藏著一個個等待被發掘的故事，它們正是空間裡有形的歷史。

當記憶隨時間變質，實體空間的經歷便是通往過去的最佳門徑。但唯有藉著現場互動，才能將過去記憶活現眼前，這是對著電腦搜尋網上資料無可比擬的連結。透過這張拼貼，我希望能保存在兩間老店經歷轉眼即逝的瞬間，凝住內裡的故事與記憶，並將之展現人前。但願在傢俬與鋪面招牌磨損裡透現出來的一份人情世故，將來亦繼續有人珍惜、關注。

*永香冰室於1959年開業，在永耀街一隅見證了土瓜灣半世紀變遷。經典劇集《大時代》及近年得獎電影《踏血尋梅》等影視作品，曾在此取景。

*蝦記麵廠，另一土瓜灣半百老字號，以新鮮手工製蝦子麵聞名。店舖至今仍保留前鋪後廠的格局。

We often dismiss or glance over interiors of shops and cafes. They become brisk stops where we do our weekly shop and nothing more, but having to inspect and analyse each facet of a space has led me to realise the depth and historical significance these old stores hold. When doing research for Har Kee Noodle and Wing Heung Cafe, I was encouraged to perceive each and every aspect inquisitively. Each photograph on the wall, each piece of decor perhaps wasn’t only there for mere aesthetic intention. Behind each aspect was a story to tell, one which represents a tangible history of the space. With perishable memories and the temporal notion of emotion, I found that connecting with the physical space was the best way to engage with the past. Researching online was one thing, but having this information set against the backdrop of where it all happened brought these memories to life. And by creating a collage, I wanted to highlight the preservation of a fleeting moment, memory encased and stories retold in these physical spaces. The wear and tear of furniture and iconic shopfront signs held a sense of sentimentality which I hope others will be more wary of in the future.

#英美語人士沒告訴我們的秘密
【台灣正規教育體制的英文 vs. 真實英文】老美為什麼也說 "No, I like it."

很多人應該都在文法書裡、或是英文課裡聽過，中文和英文對於否定疑問句的方式是不太ㄧ樣的 (!?)。例如，當英美國人問我們 "You don't want it?" 時，英文要回答 No. / Nope. 這樣的句子中，以 Yes 當作開頭回答，在「正規英語教育」中會被視為是不正確的。

中文為母語的人，的確，也更容易因為 「 對，我不想要」這樣的「中文思維」，(誤) 講出 Yes.

（Note: 為了不要招引無根據的批評，我要先聲明，我沒有說 Yes or No 是我們可以亂選亂用的，這一切的複雜性，請繼續看下去。)

但這項規則，真的有這麼黑與白 (black-and-white) 嗎？其實當我們做 conversation analysis，看真正的對話語料後，會發現當母語人士說 "yea" （比Yes 更常) 時，也有很多時候是跟中文ㄧ樣，是在「同意整句話所表達出的概念」。

所以你也會聽到英語母語人士如此對話：
A: You don't like it?
B: Yea...I don't like it. （這時 yea 的「語調」是往下降的)

你也會在美國人嘴中聽到：
A: Don't you want it?
B: NO I want it!
(這個 NO 會很強烈，去反駁 A 說B 不想要的這件事情。)

在 Midnight in Paris 這部電影中，就有這樣的一個橋段：

1 A: You speak very good English.
2 B: No, not really.
3 A: No, you do.
4 A: How long have you been dating Picasso? My God, did I just say that?
5 B: Pardon?
6 A: I don't mean to...I didn't mean to pry. Are you born in Paris?
7 B: I was born in Bordeaux. I moved here to study fashion. But you don't want to hear this.
8 A: No, yes I do.

(你有發現第三個 turn 和第 8 個 turn 的奧妙性嗎？)

好啦，看了3個真實案例，大家應該有點霧煞煞，讓我做一個小小的總結吧：

1️⃣ 按照文法規則回答、跟按照語意 (semantics) / 語用 (pragmatics) 回答，會導致答案有點不一樣。在教室裡，老師應該要用有趣的教材，解釋這樣的複雜性給學生聽。不應該使用選擇題或填空題，扼殺了學生學習英文的興趣（其實壓根也沒有呈現正確的資訊給學生)

2️⃣ 有時 second language learners 用出來的，即便「表面上」(form) 看起來沒問題，實際上有沒有問題還是不知道。我喜歡我的教授常常跟我們分享的：我們要在乎的是我們在用的時候是「怎麼想的」，因為只看表面分析常常無法分析出這個使用者學會了沒。

3️⃣ 如果真的很怕用錯，記得口說當中「語調」以及「細節補充」佔有很大的重要性。英語母語人士通常不會只用一個 yes or no 去判斷談話者 (interlocutor) 的意圖 (intention) 和語意 (meaning)，大多會用整個 context (上下文) 跟表情、語氣去判斷。

這也是為什麼我上課（尤其是口說課），喜歡用真正的大數據語料庫 (corpus) 當教材，以及讓學生討論語言的複雜性、變化性，以最後「提升學習意識」。

提升學習意識後，看美劇、影集時，我們才能真正對於 input 有感。這才是真正學習一個外語的好方法呀！
