I spend a good portion of every day watching others move, and thinking of ways in which I can help them to improve. As to what makes one move the way they do has so many parts to it. What is limiting us from moving ‘better’? Mobility? Strength? Technique? I thought I’d set aside a few minutes to break down my own clean from today’s session. The easy answer is “just clean more often and with more load”, and in some cases, that might be the best plan of action. But not for me. 💭 Was strength the limiter? Don’t think so (although more would be great and would make this lift a lot easier). I can front squat at least 25kg more than this, and can clean deadlift at least 50kg more. 💭 Was mobility the limiter? A deeper squat would be lovely, but just past 90 degrees is bone on bone for my ol’ right knee, so we’re probably not getting deeper. 💭 Was technique the limiter ?💡 Whilst there are more than 3 faults here, I’ve highlighted what I believe to be the 3 lowest hanging fruit, and the tools required which will allow me to improve this movement. Yes, a coach can help you through this process, but the more hand holding you need, the less you will progress. If you really want to improve at anything, you need to cultivate a level of awareness and understanding which allows you to be critical of your performance. The more awareness you have, the faster you can self adjust. The faster you self adjust, the faster you progress. You don’t need a certification, you just need to obsess a little more.
