It has taken decades to piece together what the fungal internet can do. Back in 1997, Suzanne Simard of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver found one of the first pieces of evidence. She showed that Douglas fir and paper birch trees can transfer carbon between them via mycelia. Others have since shown that plants can exchange nitrogen and phosphorus as well, by the same route. Simard now believes large trees help out small, younger ones using the fungal internet. Without this help, she thinks many seedlings wouldn't survive.

Another report suggests that tomato plants can 'eavesdrop' on defense responses and increase their disease resistance against potential pathogen. So not only do the mycorrhizae allow plants to share food, they help them defend themselves. It's not just tomatoes that do this. Broad beans also use fungal networks to pick up on impending threats – in this case, hungry aphids. It was found that broad bean seedlings that were not themselves under attack by aphids, but were connected to those that were via fungal mycelia, activated their anti-aphid chemical defenses. Those without mycelia did not.

In the same way, plants' fungal connections mean they are never truly alone, and that malevolent neighbours can harm them. For one thing, some plants steal from each other using the internet. We don't think about it because we can usually only see what is above ground. But most of the plants you can see are connected below ground, not directly through their roots but via their mycelial connections.

🇺🇸 Idioms 美國生活用語：老鼠 rat╱mouse 🐁

說到美國老鼠，你會想到可愛的米老鼠，還是《料理鼠王》裡頭的老鼠？趁鼠年第一天，來介紹老美眼中的老鼠！

💪順便搞懂 rat 跟 mouse 的不同之處吧！

As we enter the Year of the Rat, it’s a good time to think about rodents and their cultural significance. The first animal in the Chinese Zodiac, rats are associated with intelligence, diligence and ambition. And people born in the Year of the Rat can look forward to being wealthy and successful.

鼠年即將到來，正好來介紹一下鼠類跟其文化意涵。身為十二生肖排名第一，老鼠通常會讓我們想到聰明、勤勞且有野心。鼠年出生的人可望成功富有。

In America, however, rats don’t have such a positive image. They are seen as dirty pests that steal food and spread disease. It’s therefore no accident the rat-related idioms are all negative. 1⃣ First, the term “rat” itself. In colloquial American English, a rat is a deceptive, disloyal person or an informant. Ex: Don’t trust Tommy—he’s a rat!

不過在美國，老鼠可就沒有這麼正面的形象。牠們被視為髒東西，愛偷食物並且散播疾病，所以沒有意外地，跟老鼠有關的美國用語都是負面的。首先來看看 rat 這個字，在美式口語英文中，講某人是 rat，就是說他是「騙子、不忠實」，或是「告密者」。如：Don’t trust Tommy—he’s a rat!（別相信湯米，他是個騙子！）

2⃣ “Rat” can also be used in the verb phrase “rat out/on,” which means “to inform on sb.” Ex: The thief ratted out his accomplices to avoid jail time. 3⃣Another phrase is “smell a rat,” which means “to suspect an instance of wrongdoing, deception or betrayal.” Ex: The witness smelled a rat when he saw the suspect leaving the scene of the crime. 4⃣Finally, “the rat race” describes the intense competition and long hours of the urban work environment. Ex: Eric dreamed of leaving the rat race and buying a small farm.

因此 rat 也可延伸作為動詞：rat out/on，指「出賣某人」，如：The thief ratted out his accomplices to avoid jail time.（那個小偷出賣他的同夥逃避坐牢。）另一個片語則是 smell a rat，指「發覺有可疑之處」，如：The witness smelled a rat when he saw the suspect leaving the scene of the crime.（目擊者看到嫌犯離開案發現場時覺得行為可疑。）最後是 the rat race，用來形容職場競爭激烈且工時長的現象。如：Eric dreamed of leaving the rat race and buying a small farm.（艾瑞克夢想著離開這競爭激烈的工作環境，去鄉下種田。）

While the Chinese “shu” is usually translated as “rat,” it can also refer to mice. And mice have a slightly better reputation in English than rats. Mice are small, quiet and shy, so 5⃣ “quiet at a mouse” refers to someone who is shy and timid. Ex: The new student in our class is quiet as a mouse. 6⃣And if someone is “poor as a church mouse,” they’re really poor. This is because churches usually don’t usually store food, so mice who lived in them would have nothing to eat. Ex: My parents were poor as a church mouse when I was born.

雖然中文字「鼠」常常翻作 rat「大老鼠」，不過也可以指 mouse（複數形 mice）「小老鼠」。在英文中，小老鼠的形象比大老鼠稍微好些。小老鼠體型較小，安靜又害羞，所以 quiet as a mouse 可以用來形容某人「害羞膽怯的」，如：The new student in our class is quiet as a mouse.（我們班新來的學生很害羞。）要是說某人 poor as a church mouse，就是說他們「非常窮」。由來是因為教堂通常不會儲藏食物，所以住在教堂裡的老鼠根本沒東西可吃。如：My parents were poor as a church mouse when I was born.（我父母在我出生時候非常窮。）

七月第二個長班，迎接我的是加州洛杉磯的好天氣。
降落之後的隔天，剛好遇到了週末假期，我帶著一本最近的讀物，買了一杯好久沒喝的Jamba Juice，在購物中心二樓最旁邊的那張躺椅上坐著。
帶著墨鏡，用力地吸了一口抹茶優格口味的冰沙，好舒爽！
冰鎮的流質物體從我的喉頭，一路貫穿到我的胸口，再一直流到剛吃完Panda Food的那滿足又腫脹的胃；而體內跟體外交錯的這股複雜感，卻也意外的和諧。
因為，此時打開我身上每一寸細胞的，是舒服的涼風、是溫暖的陽光。

最近飛長班的經驗，越來越少同事分享自己的愛情故事，反過來，是我在分享自己的愛情故事。
沒有太多的轟轟烈烈情節、也沒有令人羨煞的瘋狂追求、更沒有王子公主的內心劇場，取而代之的，是另一種低調的過程，而這帶有一點平凡卻讓人心跳加速的感覺，是我喜歡、也是我享受的。

每一個愛情故事，總會有一些讓人匪夷所思、且充滿好奇的地方。
也許是雙方的條件匹配、可能是現實的差距比較、或者是外界的多餘關注⋯⋯
但到頭來，遵循著兩個人都能接受的直覺跟步調，我們的雙手牽得更緊密；而且拋開了干擾的喧囂雜音，這份難得可貴的平靜，我真的很珍惜。

「每個人的人生規劃都不同，你不需要在三十歲之前結婚、不需要老公有房多金、不需要有小孩才能形塑女人的幸福。那些標準規範都是主流社會的價值觀。」

在上一期的美麗佳人雜誌裡，我翻到了一篇談論佛系戀愛的文章。
以佛學的角度，探討一種放棄執著的態度，把別人的世俗眼光跟價值，放在自己專注的這段愛情背後，以自己的方式跟真實的感受，追求你認為真正幸福的腳步。
而這部分，說起來容易，但做起來，確實很不容易。
在慢慢適應另一個人加入的平衡點時，每段我們想認真保護的愛情，錯過的，常常都是自己心裡的聲音。

好友的、家人的、兄弟的、姐妹的。

聽完了大家的聲音，自己的聲音，卻在心裡不敢吶喊出來。
這些莫名其妙的雜訊，讓我感覺自己好像變成了一個，被別人丟掉的東西一樣。

浩瀚的宇宙中，生命把一個陌生人帶進了我的世界。
剛開始認識時，他以各種不同的形式，黏在我生活的各個角落；他用各種不同的方式，跟我的生活做連結；他找各種我無法拒絕的理由，出現在我的面前。

從現在起，我除了要對自己的生命負責，也要對他的感受負責。
我的生活日常，不再是一個人的晚餐；我的對話人稱，不再是單數而是已變成複數；我的時間切割，從24小時的「我」，變成大部分的「我們」。
有時回顧之前寫下的那幾篇難忘的文章時，發現自己總是把時間花在撰寫別人的愛情故事，而用盡一切天馬行空的想像，只為讓我變成故事裡的女主角；但現在我要做的，是把所有的時間，放在談自己的愛情故事上。

每一個人、每一件事，出現的時間點都是安排過的。好與不好，我會用眼睛去看、用心去體會。而這些感受的過程，就像是坐飛機一樣，不一定會一路順暢，遇到晴空白雲時的興奮心情、遇到亂流顛簸時的謹慎應對⋯⋯
這一路上的問題總是能得到解決，因為最終設定的目的地，有一天會到達的；不過在這之前，最重要的是 _ 我願意啟程。

秋天一定少不了各種野菇的味道。歐洲人在秋天的時候會新自上山去採菇，歐洲天然野生的蕈菇非常美味，光是簡單用橄欖油香煎就很美味了。秋天吃野菇燉飯是經典中的經典，真正傳統義大利燉飯是很濕的，可以放在盤子上慢慢攤成一片，這種的才是義大利人的做法喔。

Ingredients:

4 black mushroom
4 white mushroom
1 pack hongxi mushroom
Half an onion
Red onion head 4 to 5 petals
20g dry porcini mushroomsr
2 cups of carnaroli rice
1/2 cup of liquor
1300ml​​​​​ chicken broth
2 tbsp butter
1/2 cup pamigano cheese
Black pepper appropriate amount
Lemon specialty olive oil appropriate amount

Carnaroli 米2杯
香菇4朵
洋菇4朵
鴻喜菇1包
乾牛肝菌20g ​​​​​​
洋蔥半顆
紅蔥頭4～5瓣
白酒1/2杯
奶油2大匙
帕米加諾起司1/2杯
雞高湯 1300ml

調味料
鹽 適量
黑胡椒 適量
黃檸檬橄欖油 適量

步驟：
1. 在鍋子中放入3大匙橄欖油，加入洋蔥和紅蔥以小火炒香，加入蕈菇炒至軟後取出備用。
2. 在同一個鍋子內放入橄欖油後，加入米，炒至米表面裹上一層薄薄的油後，加入白酒，煮至酒精蒸發。
3. 先放入半杯的高湯，不時攪拌到等到湯汁被米吸乾後，再加入高湯，重複數次，等米變的濃稠與彈牙後，加入最後一大湯瓢高湯後，加適量鹽調味，倒回所有菇類，再煮約3-4分鐘後，熄火。
4. 加入無鹽奶油和起司蓋上鍋蓋一兩分鐘。
5.上桌後可以再加適量黑胡椒、淋上黃檸檬橄欖油 ，起司享用
