    Below is a letter from the girlfriend of Keal Lau, one of the 13 involved in the case of protest against NENT Development.

    Keal Lau in a lot of people’s eyes is “Ma Luck” (In Cantonese, grassroots and manly), appeared like an uncle, and often very chill. But in my eyes, he is very different than that public appearance. Recalling my first date with him, he wore a silly smile, not particularly well-dressed, with his usual slippers. I find him very untypical among guys – that day we enjoyed the move “Train To Busan” (translator: a non-fiction thriller of South Korea) and then we had dinner at Cha Chaan Tang, ordering a typical dish, which is known on the Internet “the romance of man”. Interesting enough, that night was not like any night that a man brings a girl out.

    To be honest, I do not have many friends who participate in social movements, he was one of them who is more into it. Knowing him better, I find him particularly enthusiastic in defending against injustice, even though he looks older than people at his age or that he is lazy. What he upholds is his conscience. He often tells me that he wants to run a bar for his social movement friends to gather or hold meetings. Even though I may comment a lot on his ‘dream’, I absolutely support his idea. Because the Government sucks, everyone knows that, I believe in the present day of Hong Kong under the authoritarian rule, unity in our power must translate to ability to resist.

    Because of this, I find him very sincere and kind inside. He treats his friends very well and at all times. He would just be himself, not pretentious, so he is in fact a easy-going person. (I don't want to praise him too much, he might be too carried away when he reads this when he is released).

    Talking about his current well-being, I have visited him twice in the prison. In the first time, it wasn't as bad as I thought. I am assured to hear that his cell-mates treats him well. The main complaints are the tasteless food and the stuffy environment (luckily we got some training in Africa). He has a TV to spend his time on. Because he really likes to lie down and enjoy himself, therefore he told me that the first thing he did inside was to lie down. Besides, with that chance, I also updated him with what was going on outside and regards from others; he responded with his typical smile.
    This morning I visited him again with KC (his friend) and his mother. Auntie was reassured when she saw him looking well. Keal also in a laughing tone told me that there is a black well-built guy praising him handsome, how frightened I was that he might be no longer a straight guy! Besides, he said that he has a disciplined life now, sleeping early, waking up early, gets sports everyday, he told us he is going to be a “boy-god” celebrity figure ( gross - ). All along the repeated message is that he feels very bored inside, there is no clock inside and he feels time passes really slowly; and when he can watch TV there is no good shows for him to see. So as I am repeating myself, please write letters to him, give him books and photographs to get him out of boredom. (If anyone have good suggestions, his friends and I would help out.) Hopefully time would pass really quickly.

    Even though I couldn't be by your side throughout, including the protest itself, you still have a group of good friends who cares a lot about you and I. We will support you always!

    Miss you Keal! You are not a political prisoner, you are a prisoner of conscience!

    [1] effect (n.) = a change that is a result or consequence of an action or other cause 「
1: The radiation leak has had a disastrous effect on/upon the environment.
    例2: I tried taking tablets for the headache but they didn’t have any effect.
    例3: I think I’m suffering from the effects of too little sleep.

The new machines finally effected the transition to computerized accounting last spring.

    [3] affect (V.) = have an affect on; make a difference to 「影響」「侵襲」「感染」「打動」
    例1: Both buildings were badly affected by the fire.
    例2: The divorce affected every aspect of her life.「影響」
    例3: It’s a disease which affects mainly older people.「侵擾」
    例4: I was deeply affected by the film. (= It caused strong feelings in me).
    *以上例句採自”dictionary.cambridge.org”與“dictionary.com”

    2. 把than寫成then
    (O) His dog is more adorable than mine.
    (X) His dog is more adorable then mine.

    fewer (adj.) He keeps fewer dogs than I do.
    less (adj.) He had less soup than I did.

    4. 搞混few, a few, little, a little的用法
    few (adj.)
    a few (adj.) = some but not many 很少 + 可數名詞
    little (adj.)
    a little (adj.) = some but not much 很少 + 不可數名詞

(X) Bursting into tears, I tried to comfort Nancy.
    (O) When Nancy burst into tears, I tried to comfort her.

    (X) “You are fabulous”.
    (O) “You are fabulous.”

He didn’t go to the party, nor did I.

    9. everyday與every day
    (O) He wakes up at 8: 00 every day.
    (X) He wakes up at 8:00 everyday.

    borrow (V.) take and use (something that belongs to someone else) with the intention of returning it 借入
    lend (V.) grant to (someone) the use of (something) on the understanding that it shall be returned 借出
