English Learning Ecosystem Update

As I began exploring Instagram, I struggled to find a way to deliver useful academic content. Instagram posts typically focus on images, short clips, and concise text, which are attention grabbing but not always entirely conducive to language learning. I looked over the posts of established Instagram English learning accounts, and experimented with vocabulary posts and even news posts for a couple of weeks. Not wanting to post just images, I thought about creating something new even with the rigid format of the platform.

當我開始研究怎麼用IG，我想盡了各種辦法，希望能提供大家一些實用的學術內容。 IG 的特色著重在圖片、短片以及簡潔的文字，這樣的方式雖然很容易引人注目，卻不全然有助於語言學習。我瀏覽了 IG 上英文教學網紅的貼文，並在這幾週嘗試發了一些學術單字與新聞相關的文章。我並不想只是發一些圖片，而思考著要如何在既有框架下創作一些新的東西。

A tenet of using tech in education is to engage students with what they are familiar with, not give them an entirely new platform that is difficult to use. So, how could I create a new series of Instagram posts that is both educational and unique? I thought about my goal to disseminate academic English resources, and how I could leverage my experience as a curriculum writer and voice recording artist for public school textbooks.

So far, this is what I have at the moment. I will post Word of the Day (每日一詞), high frequency vocabulary words that you see in academic texts and sometimes on the news. These Tier 2 academic vocabulary words are not exclusive to a single domain and complement the theme-based approach I’ve taken with my mind-mapping vocabulary class. In these posts, I added the pronunciation, collocation, and example sentences of each word for students. These words will be helpful to university-level students who often read academic texts and the news. Students can access them by simply clicking on the hashtag 學術英語單字.

To help students use more precise and common academic phrases, I then added Academic Phrases (每日一句), set phrases that appear in both academic speech and writing. These phrases have varying functions from introducing a topic to comparing and contrasting ideas. There is a difference between speech and writing, so I picked words that could be used for both. If one is used only in a specific context, I will make note of it in the video recording. This series of posts will help students with language output, and can be found under the following hashtag 學術英語片語.

Last, I will follow up with an abridged version of breaking news (時事英文) with high frequency collocations and audio recordings. This will provide students with the input of not only individual words, but how to use them in output (speech and writing) with context. While all these news posts might seem independent at first, I will eventually link and organize them by theme when there are enough posts. Along with my news class, these extra posts will help students stay aware of current events, acquire set phrases used in journalism, and develop critical thinking. 💬 記憶的生命：郭小櫓談寫作和電影

在Trinh T. Minh-ha的最新的電影作品 What About China? (Part I of II, 2020–2021)，郭小櫓朗讀了她的回憶錄 Nine Continents: A Memoir In and Out of China (2017) 作為配音。🎙回顧她的童年，早期在北京藝術界的職業生涯以及在歐洲的當前生活，郭把這些都記錄在她的電影和小說以及回憶錄中。在這次讓人期待的線上研討會上，郭小櫓將著重和我們談談記憶與情感之間的關係和藝術的實踐。💌

演講後，郭小櫓將與新加坡NTU CCA創始主任，NTU藝術、設計與媒體學院教授Ute Meta Bauer和NTU人文學院副教授Sim Wai Chew博士進行對話。

兼具作家、編劇、導演多個身分的郭小櫓畢業於北京電影學院，在2002年開始旅居英國，她當時還不會說英語，幾年後卻用英文寫了一本本暢銷小說。郭小櫓目前在Weatherhead東亞學院擔任駐地作家，並且是哥倫比亞大學的兼職副教授。🔍她的作品包括小說《戀人版中英詞典 A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers》（橙色小說獎入圍名單）和《我是中國 I Am China 》（2014年NPR最佳書）、回憶錄《九洲──中國內外回憶錄 Nine Continents: A Memoir In and Out of China》，以及故事片《今天的魚怎麼樣？How Is Your Fish Today?》、《在她眼中的不明飛行物 UFO In Her Eyes》和紀錄片《仙境之旅 We Went to Wonderland》。🎬

一年伊始，雙雙步入八十歲的小林和阿大就迎來滿身病痛。兩個老人等待死亡，是再自然不過的事。
只是，兩夫婦唯一的兒子哲哲三十年前死於不自然，許多事情到今日還沒有問出個明白來。
小林期待從苦苦問責的歲月中解脫，相反一直膽小的阿大越想越不忿，以前顧著二人的晚年才不去抗爭，現在連老伴也快將離去，他還有什麼要害怕的？
如是，他倆定下偉大的目標：在5月35日當天，要堂堂正正去拜祭兒子。
在不正常國家的陽光底下做正常的事也是不合法的。
「我們就去衝擊，這條不正常的底線。」阿大說。
「老伴，我終於覺得你愛我了。」小林說。
相約在5月35日，來個光明正大的紀念。

- Synopsis:
Another year has just passed. Octogenarians Siu Lum and Ah Dai are afflicted with the usual ailments of old age. They await death—a natural occurrence that is a part of life.

But 30 years ago, their son Chit met an unnatural death. Even today, many unanswered questions still surround the incident.

Siu Lum looks forward to being released from those bitter years lost searching for accountability. On the other hand, Ah Dai, who had been cowardly for years, grows all the more impetuous. Decades ago, he avoided such conflicts, concerned only about preparing for their future. With his spouse now staring death in the face, what is left to fear?

The two set an ambitious goal: On May 35th, they’ll hold a proper gravesite ritual for their son.

A normal activity that takes place in broad daylight in an abnormal country is still against the law.

“Let’s challenge this abnormal bottom line,” said Ah Dai.
“Spouse, finally, I believe you love me,” Siu Lum replied.

It’s a date: to commemorate May 35th openly, in broad daylight.

There is a lot of information that we could not fit in a 10 min video, and some parts could be more clearly presented. For example, pauses are entirely natural when one searches for content. This point was stated in the video but went unnoticed by many commenters. Some have also expressed concerns about the clips selected. We selected them based on the following criteria: be related to education, have "spontaneous" interaction, and be in the public domain. Not many clips on the net meet these criteria, and the two above were the only ones we had access to. Last, some comments (from both sides) have accused us of bias. We tried to be as impartial as possible, and if you require more information on our thoughts, please refer to our notes in the video description. As previously stated, both candidates are advanced second language users, and it is not our aim to compare or criticize them. Again, thank you all for your feedback. We will strive to do better in the future.
