I am convinced that I was a colony officer’s wife in a past life. How else could I explain my gravitation toward all things colonial (as well as my extreme discomfort in tropical weather despite having lived in it for the first 20 years of my life)?
Imagine: a newlywed wife perfectly content with a quiet and uneventful life in England, suddenly uprooted to the Far East when her ambitious husband accepts a posting to the colonies. For the first few years, the young 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘴𝘢𝘩𝘪𝘣 despises life in the crown colony of Singapore. The ungodly tropical sun, the oppressive heat and crushing humidity; and the mosquitoes, oh my God, the mosquitoes!
But with time, 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘴𝘢𝘩𝘪𝘣 finds ways to cope. Quinine, so effective at keeping the mosquitoes away, goes marvellously with gin (literally, a soothing tonic). The endless bridge parties with the other bored colony wives have inadvertently shaped her into quite the card shark. And most compellingly - the way the handsome young Malay waiters at The Raffles say “Good afternoon, ma’am” made 𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘴𝘢𝘩𝘪𝘣 feel a certain way she hadn’t felt since before she married Edmund.

本季的【筆歌墨舞–故宮繪畫導覽】在9月23日結束後,今年的展覽就告一段落;空出來的展期將由重量級特展「她—女性形象與才藝」接檔,結束前我們再來看一件由清代著名畫家 #惲壽平 的【五清圖】。#這件也很有中秋的感覺。

惲壽平(1633-1690),初名格,字壽平,號南田,江蘇武進人。擅畫山水,專攻花卉草蟲,以「沒骨法」參以己意,獨創寫生風格,為清代最出名的花卉畫家。「五清」指的是松、竹、梅、水、月,比喻君子品格堅貞,清高不俗的情操。全幅筆墨多變,枯乾焦濃,先濃後淡,墨趣豐饒獨具特色,富有高雅脫俗的氣質。款識「辛酉」,時年四十九歲。
🔽【The Five Purities (part)】Yun Shouping (1633-1690), Qing dynasty
Yun Shouping (1633-1690), whose given name was Ge and whose sobriquet was Southern Field (Nantian), went by his style name, Shouping. A native of Wujin in Jiangsu province, Yun was a talented landscape painter, but his true specialty was in paintings of flowers, foliage, and insects. By making modifications to classical "boneless" painting techniques, Yun created his own unique style of painting from life, earning him recognition as the Qing dynasty's most outstanding painter of flowers and plants.
"The Five Purities" is a reference to pines, bamboo, plum blossoms, water, and the moon, which are themselves metaphors for the constancy of character and clarity of sentiment that were meant to be displayed by cultivated individuals. The usage of both brush and ink in this work demonstrate extraordinary versatility. The ink was compellingly applied in a manner that gives a sense of dryness, with heavy washes giving way to lightness. The overall effect of Yun's technique imbues the painting with a lofty, highly-refined air. The inscription on this painting dates it to the year of Xin-you, when the artist was forty-nine years old.
