    I didn’t meet my father until I was 6 years old. My parents had a comfortable, middle-class life in Shanghai, or as close as you could get under communism. But they always wanted to live overseas, and just before I was born, my dad came to Sydney to set things up. I don’t know why, but in the end, my mother and I didn’t join him until I was 6.

    有年輕朋友在出國唸書之前會來問我，在國外有沒有什麼重要事項要注意。

    我從來不會說拿到文憑很重要。但我這樣講，很多金主爸爸媽媽可能會很不爽，所以為了家庭和樂，大家還是努力而為吧！

    但我總是跟年輕朋友們說，在你念完書回來之前，你的社群媒體裡，要有10個不同國家的朋友的聯繫方式。回來之後，保持聯絡，更好的是，未來10年，就一年拜訪一個吧！

    做得到的話，我保證你書沒白念，錢沒白花。

    為什麼呢？

    回來台灣之後，我最常被問的問題之一，就是如何培養國際觀。

    這是一個很難回答的問題，因為什麼是「國際觀」呢？

    我爬了一些文，有些說:「有能力分析並關懷世界不同地區的視野。」

    有的說：「知道世界在發生什麼事，並對這些事情產生觀點的能力。」

    還有人說：「對國際事物有興趣、對國際文化有敏感度、掌握國際局勢、了解國際緊密結合的現象，最終找出自己在國際社會中的定位。」

    我覺得這些都有點太高大上，我的定義是，對於不同國家的人，能夠真心的喜歡。

    這其實沒那麼容易，這需要對於不同國家的文化，保持開放的態度及好奇心，還能換位思考的人才做得到。

    對於凡事都從本國觀點出發的人，通常只會看到別的國家的人或文化有多怪異。

    但要跳出這個心態並不容易，也不是住在另一個國家就能夠解決，我認識一大堆從其他國家去美國的移民，住了二三十年，對當地的文化一點興趣都沒有，整天就在自己母國的小圈子裡面。

    但有個開放的心態，也的確要有環境。我覺得去別的國家讀個書很有幫助，最好還要留下來做個幾年事，也就是說，把留在國外的時間儘量拉長。但現實上無法克服也沒關係，能去交換學生幾個月也很棒。

    所以挑選學校的時候，我第一個還是先看各種排名。如果多個排名都說這個學校很前面，我覺得還是挺有用，可以省去很多讀資料的時間。這些國際知名學府，你仔細去看師資，通常陣容堅強，課程設計一級棒，念對了科系，保證你有學習的樂趣。

    這一次來找我們合作的這兩個瑞士學校格里昂（Glion）跟雷赫士（Les Roches），我特地去查了一下他們的排名。全球排名真的很高，跟美國的常春藤盟校，在美國飯店管理科系排名第一的康乃爾大學是同等級的。

    第二個我會看學生組合，是不是很多元。因為我覺得跟唸書同等重要的，是交朋友。我超級懷念30年前我剛到美國的時候，是先去唸語言學校，全班30幾個學生，來自二十幾國，大家英語講的都不怎麼樣，但因為年輕，又都是同在異鄉，很容易互相取暖。我那時最好的朋友，是來自沙烏地阿拉伯的一對年輕夫婦，就是那個太太告訴我，穆斯林女生外面包得滿滿，卻特別喜歡穿性感內衣，有一次我們幾個女生開party，她還跳肚皮舞給我們看，性感程度把我們這群亞洲女生比得很扁。

    以這個標準來看格里昂跟雷赫士表現也很好，目前兩所學校國際學生比例，格里昂約95%，雷赫士是約97%。學生分別來自一百多個國家，這真的太棒了，想想看，光是聚餐，一人帶一道菜，就可以吃多少國料理！

    另一個我覺得也很重要的，就是在外國有做事的經驗。學校畢竟還是比較保護，但職場就不同了，沒有實力很快會被淘汰。學校交的朋友，跟職場交的朋友也完全不一樣。我對美國文化的了解，絕大部分是在職場累積。剛開始在美國跑新聞那一兩年，不知吃了多少白眼，但若撐得過來，會覺得自己是神力超人，所以在選學校的時候，學校若是有能力為你安排實習機會的，要排在很前面。

    我看了格里昂跟雷赫士學校給的資訊，因為跟大型企業的關係不錯，很多頂級跨國企業都會來學校招募人才，這是很珍貴的資源。

    在事前做功課時，就聽說每個聚落可以捕鯨的時間不太一樣，有的地方只有春天能捕鯨、有的地方捕鯨季是秋天，還有一些地方春天秋天都能捕鯨，但究竟為什麼會是如此呢？究竟是純粹因為各地生活習慣不同，還是有其他原因？

    一直到離開Utqiagvik的那天，這個問題仍未獲得解答，於是我回來之後繼續尋找答案；以前求學階段非常不喜歡讀生物的我，還為此去鑽研了一下弓頭鯨的習性與遷徙行為。最後在看到遷徙路線圖的那刻，我整個恍然大悟——

    原來，弓頭鯨的在春天和秋天的遷徙路線是不一樣的！大體上來說，位於西側的聚落只有春天會有弓頭鯨經過，因此捕鯨季為春季，東側的聚落則是在秋季；至於夾在中間的Utqiagvik，地理位置得天獨厚，因此春秋兩季都可以捕鯨！

    這張圖上分享的資訊，不只解答了我自己的問題，也再次讓我感受到人與環境互動的迷人之處——環境當然不會100%決定人的行為，但環境條件的限制（無論是地形、氣候還是生物習性）仍然形塑了許多地方的文化傳統；認識這些傳統，不只讓我們更加欽佩老祖宗的生存智慧，似乎也對自然界的奧妙更加崇敬！
