    While researchers around the world race to develop a coronavirus vaccine, more attention is being paid to an old anti-malarial drug as a possible treatment for the deadly disease. Following reports from doctors in France and Morocco that chloroquine was effective in reducing coronavirus symptoms, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized the limited use of chloroquine and a form of the drug called hydroxychloroquine for doctors treating patients who have run out of other options.
    當全球專家競相研發新型冠狀病毒疫苗之際，最近有越來越多人專注在一種既有的防瘧疾藥，此藥似乎是這個致死疾病的可能解藥。法國與摩洛哥醫生所提出的報告中指出，氯奎寧能有效減輕新冠肺炎的症狀，於是美國食藥署FDA授權醫生，在所有治療方法都無效的新冠患者身上方可使用氯奎寧，以及以此成分製成的羥氯奎寧。

    First developed in the 1930s from the bark of the Chinchona tree, which is native to the Andes, chloroquine has long been used as an effective treatment for malaria. In recent years, it has also been used in the treatment of lupus and certain types of arthritis. But the drug can also cause serious side effects, like kidney and liver damage. When taken in the wrong dose, it can even cause death.
    氯奎寧是1930年代從生長於安地斯山脈的金雞納樹樹皮提煉出來的，長久以來就用來有效治療瘧疾，近年也用來治療狼瘡與某些類型的關節炎。不過這種藥也可能導致嚴重的副作用，如腎或肝損傷。如果用錯劑量，甚至會致死。

    U.S. health authorities are urging the public to be careful about taking chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine without a doctor’s supervision. This warning came after an Arizona man died after taking chloroquine phosphate, a non-medical form of chloroquine used to clean fish tanks. His wife, who also took the substance, remains in critical care. Nevertheless, chloroquine appears to show promise in treating the coronavirus, and clinical trials are taking place worldwide.
    美國衛生當局呼籲，民眾需在醫生監督之下，才能使用氯奎寧與羥氯奎寧。一名亞利桑那州男性在食用氯奎寧磷酸鹽之後死亡，此物質是一種非醫療用途的氯奎寧，專門用來清理魚缸。此意外發生之後便發佈此項警告。這名死者的妻子也同樣攝入此物質，目前仍處危急狀況。儘管如此，氯奎寧似乎是目前治療新冠肺炎的一線曙光，且全球正在臨床試用中。
