Hosna Ali, 6, eats rice with dried fish at home in Seleyang, Malaysia. Mohd Ali, says the family has not been getting enough nutrients during the pandemic. As they have been living off dwindling savings, food aid from charities organizations and kindly neighbors who occasionally offer provisions. The family's favorite foods — fried chicken, eggs, fruit and bread — are now out of their budget. They eat mainly beans. They can afford a small amount of chicken but give most of it to their daughter. On a personal note, Ali shares he longs for the taste of Kentucky Fried Chicken (@kfcmalaysia) Sometimes, he says, he thinks about moving to Milwaukee, United States of America. In this special report and photo series on food insecurity for @NPR, Ali invited me to his kitchen as he prepares a dish his mother taught him: a mix of rice, lentils, curry, chopped long beans and chili powder. "Let my wife rest today. I will cook and show you!" he says. What's most important to him, he says, is taking care of his pregnant wife (currently in 2nd trimester) and 6-year-old daughter.
