【你還在用「同義字字典」(thesaurus)嗎？】

不少英文老師喜歡建議同學使用「同義字字典」，但站在資深語言「學習者」的角度，我今天想要來「反推」同義字字典。而與其說反推，應該是說我覺得大多台灣學習英文者的問題，同義字字典都沒辦法解決。

同義字字典的不好用之處在於，其實英文裡非常少「同義字」，更多的是「類義字」。但英文程度要相當不錯，才能夠在使用時做正確的判斷，不然很容易 #挑錯字，用出很怪的句子。

例如，現在很多人在討論打疫苗的「不良反應」(adverse reactions)。有兩位同學不知道怎麼說，便去找了同義字字典。

✔︎ A 生：看到不良，想到 bad。於是同義字字典 (thesaurus) 給他 atrocious, awful, dreadful, rough, poor 等等的同義字，A 生就造了 poor response.

✔︎ B 生：看到不良，想到 negative。

B 生程度好一些，用 negative 去找，拿到了 adverse, gloomy, pessimistic, unfavorable, weak 這幾個同義字。

🁢 運氣好一點，他會選到正解 adverse. 但運氣不好，他會找到 unfavorable。學英文看運氣膩？

對學習者來說，用語料庫學習「搭配詞」才是能夠最緊急救火的。我們來看看 adverse, unfavorable 這兩個所謂的同義詞，是否真的同義吧。

・adverse effect 負面影響 / adverse reactions 不良反應
・unfavorable conditions 不利的條件 / unfavorable weather 不良於做某件事情的天氣

adverse 真的有等於 unfavorable 嗎？

同義字字典的好處主要有兩個：
✔︎ 把文字用美（very poor 變成 impoverished、disappointed 變 dismayed 這種）
✔︎ 考單字一堆的 GRE, LSAT, SAT, ACT 考試

但在把房子 #裝飾漂亮放上軟裝前，大多的人都還在打地基、蓋房子呀。根本連門跟地板都沒有。
