「But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: that thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father who seeth in secret shall recompense thee. And in praying use not vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen of men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have received their reward. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is the darkness! yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God doth so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.」

Celebration of the Father
“Behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was sixty stadia from Jerusalem. They talked with each other about all of these things which had happened. While they talked and questioned together, Jesus himself came near, and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. He said to them, “What are you talking about as you walk, and are sad?” One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things which have happened there in these days?” He said to them, “Foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Didn’t the Christ have to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?” Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. They said to one another, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us, while he spoke to us along the way, and while he opened the Scriptures to us?” They rose up that very hour, returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them, saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!”” (Luke 24:13-18, 25-27, 32-34 WEB)
Did you ever wonder why out of the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, only one of them was named while the other remained anonymous?
Therefore, I believe that the name “Cleopas” is crucial to understanding the significance of this passage.
Cleopas is an abbreviated form of the name Cleopatros, made of the two Greek words “kleos” (to celebrate) and pater (father). Cleopas means “celebration of the father”.
Let us see what Jesus did in the passage. He told the two discouraged disciples all about the things concerning Himself in the Old Testament Scriptures, and how He fulfilled them all at the cross.
It was a celebration of the Father, praising Him for His glorious plan of salvation that was once hidden and is now revealed through the prophets, apostles, and the other writers of the Scriptures.
When Jesus celebrated the Father with the two disciples, their hearts “burned”, likely with faith, hope, and love in response to the love and grace of God. They experienced an “Emmaus” (meaning: hot springs) in their hearts, washing away the unbelief and refreshing their spirits.
They were no longer depressed and despondent. Instead, they were filled with hope, and energized in their bodies and souls. Having just walked a long way from Jerusalem to Emmaus, they immediately set off on a journey back to announce the good news they had seen and heard.
This world needs “Cleopas”—a celebration of the Father. They need to hear about a Father God who is gracious and full of love, who freely offers salvation through Jesus Christ His Son. They need to hear that He wants to be a Father near to them and not a Judge far off; that He is reconciling the world to Himself through Jesus, welcoming them home.
“But all things are of God, who reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ, and gave to us the ministry of reconciliation; namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not reckoning to them their trespasses, and having committed to us the word of reconciliation. We are therefore ambassadors on behalf of Christ, as though God were entreating by us: we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For him who knew no sin he made to be sin on our behalf; so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:18-21 WEB)
Anytime you are feeling down, you can initiate a celebration of the Father. It will cleanse you from unbelief, refresh your spirit, fill your heart with hope, and energize your body and soul!

Read the Old Covenant of the Law Through the Lens of Grace
Here is a word of advice if you are attempting to study the Old Testament books yourself.
When you read them, don’t go in like a sponge that absorbs everything you read without any filter.
You may ask me, “Huh, why? I thought it’s in the Bible?”
Yes, but you must realize that not everything is written for you to apply under the New Covenant of Grace.
The Bible is also like a historical record, showing what God did, does, and will do throughout time.
It would be a mistake to try and apply something that was only meant for people who were living in a dispensation that is already over.
“You were dead through your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh. He made you alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, wiping out the handwriting in ordinances which was against us; and he has taken it out of the way, nailing it to the cross;” (Colossians 2:13-14 WEB)
The Ten Commandments were written by the hand of God and they were nailed to the cross, crucified with Jesus.
So when you read books like Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy, don’t read it like you are trying to learn what to do and what not to do under the Old Covenant of the Law.
Instead, go in and hunt for revelations of Jesus hidden in the types and shadows. Every offering, every detail about the Tabernacle, was designed to reveal truths about God and Jesus Christ.
“Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.” (Luke 24:27 WEB)
As Jesus Himself said, the five books written by Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, Leviticus, Deuteronomy), and the books of the prophets thereafter in the Old Testament, actually hint truths about the coming Messiah (Jesus Christ).
The truths in the New Testament could not be plainly written, if not the devil would know God’s plan of salvation for mankind and try to sabotage it. Therefore, these truths were hidden in hard-to-understand prophecies, types, and shadows.
“But we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the wisdom that has been hidden, which God foreordained before the worlds for our glory, which none of the rulers of this world has known. For had they known it, they wouldn’t have crucified the Lord of glory.” (1 Corinthians 2:7-8 WEB)
Even though readers under the Old Covenant did not fully understand what was to come, they knew enough pieces, and they were expecting their Messiah to come and save them. It was enough to assure Israel that God will never abandon them.
The New Testament was given to us after the cross. The devil cannot undo the redemption that Christ purchased for us at the cross. The devil is also doomed, and time is just ticking until he eventually burns in the lake of fire with all those who reject Jesus Christ.
Today, we can read the Old Testament in a new light since we already know God’s plan of salvation. We can read it and say things like, “Oh, so God was hinting about Jesus through this portion of Scripture about the Law. I see it clearly now!”
I would love to show you what I learned from the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These books contain certain difficult pieces of Scripture that some have twisted to make people fearful and in bondage to the Law. Reading “Understand the Four Gospels Through the Lens of Grace” will free you from much wrong believing. I hope you get it and enjoy the eBooks: https://bit.ly/understandeveryparable

Exposing a Popular Erroneous Teaching in this Season
““If I shut up the sky so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people; if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:13-14 WEB)
Recently, due to current events in the world, there have been many erroneous teachings based on the passage above.
People are saying that the bush fires in Australia, the locust swarms in Africa, and the COVID-19 pandemic are God’s judgments upon the world for their sins.
Most of them then sincerely ask people to turn from their sins and pray to seek God’s forgiveness so that He would heal their lands.
This is complete nonsense because if the people could turn from their sins by themselves, why was there a need for Jesus to come and die on the cross?
These erroneous teachings are just going to bring people back to bondage under the Law and make them think that God is punishing people with droughts, fires, plagues and pestilences.
“But all things are of God, who reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ, and gave to us the ministry of reconciliation; namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not reckoning to them their trespasses, and having committed to us the word of reconciliation.” (2 Corinthians 5:18-19 WEB)
It is not God doing these. They are either effects of the fallen state of the earth, or caused by Satan and his demons.
“in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the children of disobedience;” (Ephesians 2:2 WEB)
Don’t forget that the apostle Paul called Satan “the prince of the power of the air”. It means that Satan has some limited power over nature in this world. Causing fires, tornadoes, pestilences and plagues are not beyond his ability.
God is not using all these bad things to threaten the world into repentance. It is not the stopping of their wicked ways that causes God to heal them and their land. God already paid for healing of mankind and the earth through the blood that Jesus shed at the cross.
To suggest that your efforts at turning from wicked ways is the basis for God healing your land is a huge insult to Jesus’ finished work at the cross.
Have you really turned from all your wicked ways in both thought and deed, and can you ensure that your whole nation does that perfectly? Don’t be foolish and go back to bondage under the Law and works-based justification.
God knows that man will continue to sin because of their sinful flesh, and He already poured out His full wrath for sins upon Jesus at the cross. You cannot perfectly stop sinning for the rest of your life because you still have sin in your flesh, but all the condemnation for sin is gone because it has all been exhausted in Jesus who was offered up as your substitute.
Can you pray for God to heal your land? Sure, do that and also pray that God will save the people in your land through the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. But know this clearly that it is not because of you turning from your wicked ways that God hears and heals. It is because of Jesus’ finished work at the cross—the precious blood that paid for your sins and the death that established the New Covenant of Grace.
“Stand firm therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and don’t be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.” (Galatians 5:1 WEB)
Stand firmly in the freedom of Grace and don’t be again entangled in the Law!
