….เซลโดเวีย (Seldovia) หมู่บ้านเล็กๆที่ตั้งอยู่ริม อ่าวคาเชมัก (Kachemak Bay) ทางตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ของเมืองโฮเมอร์ รัฐอลาสก้า จนชาวท้องถิ่นเรียกหมู่บ้านนี้ว่า

“City of Secluded Charm” หรือเมืองแห่งเสน่ห์อันเงียบสงบ

ในอดีตเมืองนี้เป็นที่อาศัยของชาวรัสเซียกลุ่มพ่อค้าล่านากทะเล หรือหาไม้ซุงสำหรับซ่อมแซม การล่าสัตว์อย่างต่อเนื่องทำให้จำนวนนากและสัตว์ป่าลดลง จึงเกิดการเพาะพันธุ์สุนัขจิ้งจอกขึ้นบนเกาะ

สุนัขจิ้งจอกเหล่านี้ถูกพาขึ้นไปยังเกาะ Yukon และเกาะ Hesketh บริเวณรอบนอกของอ่าวคาเชมักในอลาสก้า นั่นจึงเป็นสาเหตุว่าทำไมที่อลาสก้าจึงมีสุนัขจิ้งจอกกระจายอยู่ในหลายๆเมือง

อีกทั้งเคยมีโรงงานปลากระป๋องจำนวนมาก นับเป็นการเติบโตทางเศรษฐกิจที่ใหญ่ที่สุดของเมืองเซลโดเวีย มีการสร้างท่าเรือแอนเดอร์สันสำหรับเรือเดินสมุทรขนาดใหญ่จนเรียกได้ว่าเคยเป็นเมืองที่มีความเจริญถึงขั้นเรียกว่า ศูนย์กลางการขนส่งของ South-central Alaska

จุดเปลี่ยนครั้งใหญ่ของ Seldovia
ฤดูใบไม้ร่วงปี ค.ศ. 1964 ได้เกิดเหตุแผ่นดินไหวครั้งใหญ่รู้จักกันในชื่อ ‘Good Friday Earthquake’ ซึ่งเป็นเหตุการณ์แผ่นดินไหวครั้งที่รุนแรงที่สุดเท่าที่เคยมีบันทึกไว้ของทวีปอเมริกาเหนือ กินระยะเวลายาวนานถึง 5 นาทีและทำให้พื้นยุบตัวลงกว่าหนึ่งเมตร เกิดพายุรุนแรง และกระแสน้ำพัดสูงที่สุดของปีได้ทำให้ทางเดินไม้ริมทะเล และอาคารบ้านเรือนเสียหายอย่างหนัก

เหตุการณ์นี้การเคหะแห่งรัฐอลาสก้า (Alaska State Housing Authority) จึงมีดำเนินการปรับปรุงโครงสร้าง โดยการรื้อถอนทางเดินไม้และอาคารริมน้ำ แล้วสร้างกำแพงกั้นน้ำและสร้างเมืองขึ้นใหม่บนพื้นที่ที่สูงขึ้น

วันเวลาผ่านไปมีการสร้างถนนหนทางมากขึ้นทำให้เมืองโฮเมอร์ (Homer) กลายเป็นศูนย์กลางการทำประมงแห่งใหม่ของอ่าวคาเชมักแทน ทว่า Seldovia ยังคงเสน่ห์ของเมืองชายทะเลไว้ด้วยการสร้างทางเดินไม้ขึ้นมาใหม่ ซึ่งก่อนเกิดเหตุการณ์แผ่นดินไหว Seldovia เคยถูกเรียกว่า Boardwalk Town หรือเมืองที่มีทางเดินไม้อันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ที่ยาวรอบหมู่บ้าน

ปัจจุบันเซลโดเวีย อาจจะไม่มีสิ่งอำนายความสะดวกแหรือแหล่งความบันเทิง แต่ที่นี่กลับเต็มไปด้วยกิจกรรมกลางแจ้ง ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการตกปลา, ปั่นจักรยานชมเมือง, เล่นแพดเดิลบอร์ด, พายเรือคายัค, เดินป่า, ชมปลาแซลมอน, เก็บผลเบอร์รี่,ขับรถเอทีวี หรือจะลองล่องเรือไปตามชายฝั่งตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือระยะทางเกือบ 18 กิโลเมตรเพื่อไปยังอ่าวจาคาลอฟ (Jakalof Bay)

เมืองแห่งนี้เต็มไปด้วยนกทะเล นาค วาฬ แมวน้ำ กวางมูส และสัตว์อื่นๆ โดยเฉพาะนกอินทรีหัวล้าน ที่มีมากกว่า 50 ตัว และนกชนิดอื่นๆ อีกนับไม่ถ้วน เช่น นกสเทลเรอสเจ, นกไพน์ซิสกิน, นกกางเขนและนกกระสาสีน้ำเงิน เรียกได้ว่าเป็นสวรรค์ของคนรักสัตว์และความสงบที่แท้จริง

Our family loves going on nature hikes and since overseas travel was curbed, we started exploring more locally. There're many nature trails to discover here and some of the gems can be found on Sentosa - the Imbiah Trail, Coastal Trail and Mount Imbiah Nature Trail. The first two are pretty known but the last one not so much and more secluded.

If you’re planning to hike with the kids or on your own, you can try out the Siloso Trail as part of the MSIG Biodiversity Mission 2021 on District app. MSIG Insurance has developed 2 trail challenges that you can do in Singapore - Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve and Siloso trails - in order to raise awareness about the biodiversity at these 2 sites. The trails are FREE and open to everyone. All you need is the latest version of the District app and off you go!

We did just that and for once, wifey & I took a backseat and let the monkies take the lead in the Siloso trail. Using the District app, they navigated through the trail, stopped at various checkpoints to either collect points or answer questions about the local biodiversity we came across on the trail. Swipe to see how they did for some of them! In addition to points earned along the way, 200 points will be awarded for every 1km walked. Let’s just say I have never seen them so eager to compete and walk MORE. Maybe because there are $50 sports vouchers to be won for the top scorers! LOL.

So if you have been trying your darndest to get the kids outdoors, maybe the MSIG Biodiversity Mission will be up their alley. The app is super easy to use, the trails are kid-friendly (even for beginners), there are points to earn, and the kids get to learn more about the fauna and flora in our home country too. Lotsa wins right there!

Katherine and I spent the day hitting up some amazing traditional markets in Tainan. The first was the Hsinta Fish market just south of the city. It's full of all kinds of tasty seafood snacks. We picked up some fried stuff and fish balls and headed to a secluded beach to try them out. Afterwards, we drove back into the city to the He Wei Traditional Market, where we loaded up on fruit and a few more snacks before heading back out to the beach to enjoy the sunset.

Unzen is such a nice area to visit if you have a car - the remote location away from any major train lines makes it a quiet and peaceful hot spring town, free from excessive tourism or gimmicks that other, more popular destinations have.

If you live in Kyushu (especially Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Saga, or Fukuoka) a weekend trip to Unzen is a great choice if you:

✅ Have a Driver's Licence
✅ Enjoy Hiking and Nature
✅ Are an Independent Traveler
✅ Want a Secluded Getaway

The nearby towns of Minami-Shimabara and Obama are just a short drive down either side of the mountain, and offer their own attractions as well (such as dolphin watching!)
