We decided to shoot part of In the Mood for Love in the rundown heart of Bangkok. There’s something about the way it is falling apart that is in tune with the reticence of the characters, and the nostalgia there amplifies the mood and themes of the film.
There was something about the way the single streetlight fell on this back alley wall… it gave it so much texture, a strong ‘craggy’ look, a sense of loss.
I placed very simple lamps to try to replicate that feel, and once the actors started to move through the space, they were throwing shadows on the wall which gave it another level of intensity, another level of loneliness, or whatever you are going to call it. And yet, it seemed to feel a bit too much “Cahiers du Cinema“, a bit too much ‘in your face’.
And then for some reason I walked into the battered apartment block that runs the length of the street. I went inside someone’s home, a lot of people’s homes, actually, and looked out on the street through the windows that faced our wall. From inside, I felt one more level of detachment, of being further removed that could make the scene even more poignant, with more loneliness.
So we shot most of this sequence of the film as a tracking shot, from the apartment corridor looking out.
The mixture of lighting, camera position, and the way in which the actors all relate to each other make the dynamics of the film.
Now you can’t explain all that to someone. It didn’t happen because we thought it through. It just happened that this space with this particular light and with this particular possibility gave us this moment.
