What are the benefits of Istighfaar? 1. Increase in one’s Rizq: A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and asked, “O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)! When I make dua to my Lord, what shall I say?” He (ﷺ) said, “Say: ‘O Allah, grant me pardon, have mercy upon me, protect me, and provide me sustenance.’” And he (ﷺ) collected his fingers together except his thumb and said, “It is in these words (that there is supplication) which sums up for you (the good) of this world and that of the Hereafter.” [Muslim] “O Allah! Forgive for me my sins, and make spacious for me my home, and bless for me my provision.” [Saheeh al-Jaami’] “O Allah, forgive them, have mercy on them, bless them and expand their sustenance for them.” [Musnad Ahmad] Other benefits of Istighfar: 2. Forgiveness of sins: And said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.' [Nuh: 10] 3. The Pleasure of Allah and His Love: Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.” [al-Baqarah: 222] 4. Receive Allah’s Mercy: Why do you not seek forgiveness of Allah that you may receive mercy?” [al-Naml: 46] 5. Rain and strength: Of the benefits of seeking forgiveness is that Allah would send down rain from the sky. And O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers and increase you in strength [added] to your strength. [Hud: 52] 6.Safety from punishment: "But Allah would not punish them while you, [O Muhammad], are among them, and Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness". [Al-Anfal: 33] 7. Joy on the Day of Judgment: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Whoever likes to be pleased with his record [of deeds], let him ask for a great deal of forgiveness.” [al-Silsilah al-Sahihah] 8. Entry into Jannah: "O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow [on] the Day when Allah will not disgrace the Prophet and those who believed with him." [Al-Tahreem:8)

Often we cry and fuss about things that happen to us, and many times we fumble as we try to navigate through life with wavering levels of imaan. We make mistakes or judge others for their mistakes, we are taken for granted or have taken others for granted, maybe our good intentions have been wrongly perceived by others. I used to lament and ponder over the many mistakes I have made in my life. Then I came across this: “The sin that makes you sad and repentant is more liked by Allah (SWT) than the good deed which turns you arrogant.” And it never felt more true. Alhamdulillah for all that has happened, because thankfully it has drawn me closer to Him. Indeed I have grown and transformed, and while I am not perfect and will never be, I hope to always strive to be better. He always has a way of revealing what we need to hear or learn most. Many lessons in life are a repeat, until we truly learn from them. I will never understand the need to make comments or ‘spill the tea’ regarding issues that have very little or nothing to do with us. We think we have it all figured out just because we have ‘receipts’. But nothing good ever comes out of it: more confusion ensues, ties are strained and perceptions are altered. We are so quick to judge matters we have little or no knowledge of. Choosing not to engage doesn’t mean guilt, it just means we choose to engage with the One who truly matters. Why talk and confide in people, when we know only He can help us through it? To err is human, but to forgive is divine. "If what you say about him is true, then you have backbitten him, but if it is not true then you have slandered him." [Muslim] As Ramadan comes to a close, I pray for everyone to be granted ease for everything they are going through. May we evolve and emerge from this month as better versions of ourselves, focusing on things that truly matter instead. May we get to meet Ramadan again very soon, insyaAllah.
